I DO think tumblr's dev team has been instructed to constantly implement new features and that's why they keep tweaking the UI in goofy ways. I imagine this is an upper management thing, so even if we say "well don't change anything and just maintain the status quo" they'll continue to make other changes anyway.

I will admit I REALLY like the recent improvements they've added to tumblr's search (you can exclude terms now!! you can search multiple tags!! and time frames!!) so it's not like they're incapable of adding useful features. it might be mutually beneficial for us as users if we were more vocal about things we want and don't want. Some features I'd like to see added:

so, i know it might be hard to know the difference between people yelling about a change simply bc its different, or yelling about a change that is quite literally killing everything tumblr was so good for, but this truly is the latter, this is the kill switch, if you dont hear me complain next week its not bc i accepted the changes, its bc im not here anymore.

the reblog chains and how they used to work is what tumblr IS, its its essence, its very core, you are removing the skeleton that everything on here is built on, everything that made it great. i have been here for over ten years, i have stayed here despite everything bc the reblog and tagging system is what i liked, being able to see long posts with alot of additions, going through all the tags on it- i cant even put into words how much depended on that system, its is .. everything

i stayed here bc i loved the way it was, i dont want it to be anything else, i am here bc it WASNT like everything else, this is what made tumblr so unique, this was my 'safe space', my retreat, where i could post what art and what text i wanted, however long it was, i could read and learn and communicate with so many in one spot, easily know about and get rid of a harasser on your post if need be, read through all the interaction left on my art and posts i made-

making it into a botched pseudo twitter quote posting system, essentially erasing any notes on a post if someone adds anythign to it and makign it downright impossible to look at all the notes it actually got for anyone, hiding notifications and what others reblogged a post with from each other, from YOURSELF EVEN if you add something to your own post, completely severing, isolating everyone from everyone else is the death for this site and every bit of unique and valuable way to interact and communicate that it had brought forth, i am not exaggerating even a little bit.

unless this change is fully reversed, and i mean FULLY reversed, i will not be posting here anymore. there is no point to it, theres is no meaning left to it.

The reblog chain is one of the things that makes Tumblr unlike anywhere else. All the notes on reblogs are attributed to the original post, no matter which branch people actually liked or reblogged. We want to keep encouraging conversations, and give contributors the recognition they deserve. 

Soon, you'll be able to like, reblog, or reply to any part of a reblog chain, and that note will go to that reblog's author. Each reblog will have its own counts, instead of one aggregated number from every version of the post. And yes, you’ll be able to like multiple posts in one chain.

If a reblog doesn't add anything, the love flows up to the last person in the chain who did. Your post doesn't lose notes just because people spread it quietly.

Past notes will stay on the original post — we're only changing what happens from here on out. Retroactively re-attributing all of them would be... a lot.

This is just the beginning. More changes are coming as we keep building this out – stay tuned!

We rolled out a significant change to how notes work on reblogs, and the reaction has been strong. We're not going to pretend otherwise. 

First things first: We're reversing the change. Your feedback in comments, emails, and especially reblogs, made clear that the rollout created problems we need to address before moving forward. We also should have communicated this differently from the start, and we didn't.

We still believe there's a better version of how reblogs can work. One that gives every voice in a chain the credit it deserves. But we want to get there with you.

In the coming days we'll share more on how we plan to do that,  including ways to work directly with some of you on this and future changes before they ship.

This idea, at its core, isn't even that bad. The idea of a reblog getting notes? Awesome! That sounds like a great idea, and a very good way to help credit contributers. But it cannot whatsoever cut into the original poster's notes. Just give the note to multiple people!

But this, Tumblr, this will break this platform fundamentally. Following through means you'll become dead. If Tumblr will become a worse X or Bluesky, than many will just move to X or Bluesky. Many will just leave flat out.

If you read this through, don't reblog it, because then OP wouldn't get the notes and engagement. Reblog the original post.

it could have been a good update, if they had simply ADDED a feature instead of CHANGING the feature.

JUST adding the ability to reblog from anywhere in the thread (thus saving us the trouble of going up a poster to remove a reblog we don't want/need, such as sometimes I go up a reblog to not carry on a ping someone did to me, as that doesn't need to follow the post everywhere)? Cool. We were already doing that kind of stuff. People have up-chained to remove additions since time immemorial on this hellsite. This would literally have just been a time-saver button.

JUST adding in a comment-adder getting notification ALSO if their addition was reblogged (and NOT removing the notification/notes from the original post), so that OP and the commenter get notified? Yeah okay. Nothing would have been taken away from anyone, and this would actually add a function that would allow commenters to respond to people who reply to them, even if the person didn't reblog directly from them. OP would also see, so they could also be in the conversation they started. No one gets cut out of the conversation if they've added to it. That would be neat.

But to cut OP out of the conversation if someone reblogged from them and commented?? what kind of hot garbage?? what kind of drug-induced hallucination created this community-killing change? Who on earth approved this? What was the goal of this move?? You could have done something good and useful with your time instead of pissing on your poor userbase and calling it rain.

you may be thinking that some of the reactions to the tumblr update are unfounded or panicky. but i meant what i said: this will fucking destroy any artist on this site.

for your reference, i tracked down one of my original posts; which had a notes section that looked like this:

holy shit. by my math, that is not even two percent of the amount of aggregate notes my writing actually has. i am not able to see any of the literal hundreds of replies, comments, or tags.

maybe this is a bit presumptuous but i consider myself to be fairly popular on this site. i still remember the first time a large blog "picked up" my work - how quickly all of a sudden i was getting seen. notes on my poetry jumped from like 10 to 300 to 3k. overnight. that was the magic of tumblr, and the incredible writing community i found here.

but now if i answer any of my fellow writers, if i say please go check this out or even if i add additional context to my own work - the artist is removed completely from their own content.

do you want to reply to an "ask game"? do you want to reply to a story prompt? do you want to just make a funny joke with your friends? well, that sucks - you might be depriving them of literally 98% of their notes.

it isn't about clout chasing. it is about giving creators control over their own materials. even a silly post deserves to be connected directly with the person that thought it up.

the tumblr feedback form is currently crashed for me, but when it's up, everyone please go (politely! calmly! like you're walking in a burning building!) tell them what you think. in the meantime: @staff @changes like... i am begging you. literally just set up a suggestion box for ideas on how to monetize tumblr, surely one of us can help you.

the ability for OP to return to clarify intent or correct misinfo after more than 1 person has commented

gimmick blogs. having a rat or a car or any of the words in the bible in your post now means those blogs get credit for your entire post

the ability for OP to identify where harrassment is coming from if the harasser did not reblog directly from them

any joke that has more than 1 comment. 'what the fuck are you two talking about', furry artists are more valuable than doctors, etc -- not impossible, but once more than 1 person has commented the OP can never return to the chain or even see what people have added
