My cousin married into a really strict Mormon family and drank the punch. He named his first son Castiel - Cas for short - because he thought Cas was the coolest character on Supernatural. He stopped watching because of the Chuck/God arch. He was quite shocked a couple weeks ago to find that he’d named his Mormon son after a now openly gay angel and was looking into how to legally change his son’s name. His son (12) went and said, ‘Nope, still works for me’ and bravely came out to his parents and left the cult church.

So if you follow this link, you’ll find the Department of Defense policy on using firearms. It has quite strict regulations on when they can be used, how they can be used, and on whom. Military members are not even allowed to unholster their weapon unless they intend to use it, and to be in the situation in which they intend to use it they have to meet very specific requirements. Before they can resort to unholstering the weapon, they have to have exhausted all lesser means. It standardizes the expectations on the military members so they don’t panic or overreact if a situation arises where they have to use deadly force.

I was in the Navy for eight years. I can attest to the extensive training I had to go through just so that I could stand my post in an unhazardous non-combat zone. I know for a fact that if I had ever acted out and used my weapon without just cause that my military career would have been over.

My biggest concern with this news, however, is why weren’t stricter standards of when to use a weapon implemented sooner? Why are people who are protecting cities full of innocents and children not trained more seriously on when it is ok to open fire? It infuriates me that the lack of training and situational awareness that I was held to while standing around at a fence is not applied to the men and women that open fire on public streets to ‘protect’ citizens.

Another reason society sucks

Only moments ago, I sat helplessly as a drunk college student pissed on my car.  I went out for a night time smoke on my apartment patio, directly across from where my car is parked.  I then see two college students, men, stopped directly at my car.  One proceeds to lean on it like he owns it while the other relieved himself on my tire.  Not only do we live in a society where this is an acceptable behavior because they can use the excuse ‘I was drunk, so sorry.’ but as a woman, I have been so engrained since childhood to have a fear of drunken men that I sat silently and watched this behavior.  Every second I witnessed this, I imagined every worst case scenario if I spoke up; including physical assault and rape for defending my property.  I’m ashamed that I did nothing, but absolutely drawing a blank on what I could have done in that situation.  So in the morning, I have to swallow my pride and wash the piss off my car all because for generations people have told me to protect myself, rather than teaching their sons to be decent human beings.  I’m feeling pretty helpless right now.

My parents are Whovians

So I got my parents into Doctor Who quite a while ago and they just got into season 9.  They have a really adorable thing where they secretly call me without the other knowing and talk to me about the show so that the other doesn’t know what a nerd they are (it’s super cute.  They’ve been married for 35 years, I’m pretty sure they know they married complete dorks).  Either way, today my mom called me and after we talked about Once Upon a Time (we have BOTH been shipping Captain Swan since the get-go) my mom said the weirdest thing.  “The Doctor sure is really familiar with Clara considering she’s his granddaughter...”  and I was just WTF?  “Mama, Why would you think she was his granddaughter?”  It turns out that since the episode where Clara was the impossible girl and it showed the flashback of her on Gallifrey telling the Doctor to that the type 40 TARDIS, her brain just went ‘Oh, old man and young girl - Crystal said the Doctor had a granddaughter, Clara must be the granddaughter!!!!’ and it’s been in her head ever since.  I spend half an hour convincing her otherwise today.

Meanwhile, about half an hour later, my dad calls me and starts a Doctor Who conversation, and I know it’s going to end the same way it always does and I just love it.  “I mean, he just loved Rose so much, and it wasn’t fair.  And Donna was his best friend... it wasn’t fair.”  “I know, Papa, I know...”

I’m 27 years old, and these are the conversations I get to have with my parents.  Life is ok sometimes.
