Finally posting after more than a year working on this fic, right on time for my favorite mage's birthday! 🥺🙌 I really wanted to give a shout-out & special thanks to DovahDoodles on ao3/Dova from TDP Discord for seriously helping me get unstuck with writing this and credit her for paragraph 42 and 43. Also a huge shout-out and thanks to @pavatopia for beta reading this whole fic and helping out a great deal to perfect it. And one last shout-out to @tategaminu for my commission of a very special scene in this fic!
Anywho, this fic is pretty heavy on both broyals bonding, especially in the first half, then fully Rayllum in the latter half. I really hope you enjoy reading two of Callum's most important bonds as much as I enjoyed writing them! 😁

Callum and Ezran peacefully laid on towels near the Banther Lodge, soaking in the setting sun to dry up after they went for a swim in the river.
“You know, Dad was right,” Ezran started, smiling brightly. “Maybe we can do things here when it’s not winter.” he paused, then furrowed his brow and let out a deep sigh. “I really hope they can find him.”
Callum sat up and looked at his brother with sharp eyes.
“They will. Corvus is a great tracker and even notices all the tiniest details.”
Ezran let out another sigh, casting his eyes down.
“I know. It’s just… he’s been gone for more than three years. I really miss him.”
“Me too, Ez. Me too,” Callum finally took his brother in his arms and wrapped him in a tight hug.
As the sky darkened, Callum and Ezran returned to the Banther Lodge which was surprisingly dimmer than usual this time around. Callum stepped ahead of Ezran and raised his arm, stopping his brother from stepping forward.
“Something’s not right,” Callum said. “Where is everyone?”
Ezran chuckled lightly and stepped forward, grabbing his brother’s arm.
“Just trust me, ok?” he assured Callum as he stepped ahead towards the doors.
“Wait a minute, Ezran, this isn’t another -"
Before Callum could say anything else, the doors were immediately pushed open.
“SURPRISE!! “Happy 18th, birthday mage!”
The room lit up brightly with exploding confetti and swelled with a cheering crowd. Then Rayla came running to him and engulfed herself in his arms, and along with everyone, she and Ezran began to sing:
“Have a mystical magical birthday,
Have a wonderful whimsical birthday,
Have a fun and fantastical birthday!
With wishes and kisses and laughing, and love!”
After finishing the song, the crowd cheered and Rayla pulled Callum's head close to plant a kiss on his cheek.
“Happy birthday, my mage,” she told him softly. Callum turned Rayla towards him and held her tightly. Because she was here with him now, what was a sour anniversary for the past three years became a joyous, celebratory day once again.
Ezran came forward and joined in on the hug.
“Happy birthday, big brother! I know these past few months have been rough and we may not be home anymore, but I still wanted to make sure you got to celebrate your own special day. And Rayla and I wanted to plan something fun for you.”
“This is perfect!” Callum responded. “I’m so happy to have you all here with me,” he said warmly as he stroked Rayla’s arm. Afterwards, his aunt Amaya came and signed him "Happy Birthday" followed by her special bear hug, with Queen Janai giving her birthday wishes the Sunfire way. Runaan and Ethari also came from the Silvergrove to spend the day, along with Aanya, who aided Ezran, Rayla, and the council in putting the party together.
"Ooh ooh ooh! Happy birthday Callum!" chanted Zym, who was approaching jumpily while carrying Bait, Stella, and the baitlings, who were all wearing different trinkets.
"Uhhh…thank you…Zym…" Callum responded, still not quite used to the young dragon speaking.
Barius wheeled the cart with his special pineapple right-side-up cake. Callum felt his mouth watering when he saw the cream sliding beneath the chopped fruit.
"I hope this time around, you'd be willing to try the cake, I made some changes and I promise you'll love it!" Barius thrummed once he reached them and lit up all eighteen candles across the cake.
"Close your eyes and make a wish!" Ezran exclaimed. Callum took a light breath smiling, doing as his brother told him. Then without hesitation, he blew all the tiny flames out.
A few moments later, Callum sat together with Ezran, enjoying Barius’s cake. “You know,” Ezran started after swallowing a bite. “I’m really happy that you and Rayla are back together again. Even with everything that happened between us recently, I still prefer you two together than fighting and arguing a lot,” he finished with an awkward smile.
Callum let out a small chuckle and scratched the back of his head. “Yeah, me too. I’m really glad to have Rayla back in my life more than anything, we’re definitely in a much better place than we ever were,” he responded. Callum smiled then noticed Ezran’s look in Aanya’s direction. “So, what’s been going on between you and Aanya? You guys seem to be getting closer to each other lately.” Ezran’s cheeks began to blush. “We’re uh… really close friends, that’s all.”
Callum smirked then leaned in closer to Ezran. “Close friends, huh? You sure we don’t need to have that talk about the sandwiches soon?”
Ezran now felt his whole face flush with heat. “Callum! Stop it!” he cried out as he nudged his laughing brother in the arm. “I told you, we’re just friends!” He hid his face in his hands while Callum cooled down and let out a sigh.
“Alright, alright,” he said to wind Ezran down. “I’m just letting you know that if you wanna talk about anything, including relationships or even just friendships, I’m here for you, buddy,”
“Thank you,” Ezran finally said coolly as the two boys went in for a hug. “And oh, one last thing,” Ezran said as he pulled away from his brother. “Rayla has one more birthday surprise for you, she’s waiting for you on the bridge.”
~~~
Callum walked towards the bridge and he saw Rayla standing at the edge looking towards the river.
“You know,” Rayla started as he finally met up with her and put his hand on her shoulder. “I originally wanted to show you the Moonshadow birthday dance for your fifteenth birthday but -” She paused to catch her breath before she could continue. “I know I messed up and ruined your birthday,”
“Rayla,” Callum told her softly, stroking her shoulder.
“It’s why this time I decided to help put this party together, I wanted to make things right, to make your memory of your birthday —”
Callum quickly turned her towards him and pulled her in for a kiss. When he finally pulled back, he looked earnestly into her eyes as he held her.
"Rayla, you don't need to keep explaining yourself. All of that is behind us and now we're here together. I couldn't have asked for a better birthday. And you can show me the Moonshadow birthday dance this time,"
Rayla smiled and nodded. She then circled around Callum with each careful step of her toes, her arms gesturing with each graceful movement. Her performance was elegant, yet struggled to conceal her rising fear of embarrassment. Doubt — she wouldn't let herself mess this up for him. Not again.
With a final, finishing curtsey on her boot, she held her hand out with a playful smile. Callum stared at her blankly and blinked erratically.
"Huh, what? Me?" he stuttered. "Rayla, uh… I don't know if I can do this." He let out a forced chuckle.
"You'll be fine, I trust you," Rayla told him as she grabbed his hand. "Besides, I'll take it easy on you."
She winked at him as she abruptly pulled him closer and placed his hand on her waist. Callum went from exclaiming to smiling determinedly at Rayla right away as he interlaced his fingers with hers. With Rayla guiding him, they slowly swayed across the bridge, with their arms ebbing and flowing like waves. Rayla raised both their arms and Callum, understanding the signal, gently spun her around. He then sent her gliding away from him yet still gripped her hand tightly. With a twinkle in his eyes, he pulled her back into his arms.
"See? I knew you got this!" Rayla playfully cheered, leaning into him. "It's not that hard,"
Callum then turned Rayla towards him and smirked. Both on their toes, they harmonized elegantly like two doves circling each other in the sky. After a few more twirls, Callum finally dipped her. He supported her with one hand at the small of her back while Rayla caressed his hair. They completely lost themselves in each other's eyes — until Rayla quickly leaned forward to kiss a wide-eyed Callum. Pulling back a little, she slid her hand down to his heart.
"I love you, dummy." She softly chuckled. Smiling, they leaned in for another kiss until they could no longer contain their snorts and giggles.
When they finally finished dancing, they both snuggled against a tree with Rayla leaning her head on Callum's shoulder. Their eyes were locked up on the brightest star in the sky — a star they now fully understood the true full story of.
"Who would've thought?" Callum started as he continued staring. "That this one star that had a bunch of different names, ended up being the biggest reason we have to defeat an angry vengeful titan?"
Rayla stirred on his shoulder slightly and sighed. "Even in Xadia, I haven't heard of Leola's connection to Aaravos. Or about some all powerful cosmic force that would kill an innocent child."
Both their hearts grew heavy as they remembered what Ezran and Terry told them.
"This was the very beginning of the cycle." Callum sighed.
"And now it's up to us to end it here once and for all." Rayla finished determinedly.
What is with these, quite frankly, insane takes about Vax not submitting due to his ego and wanting to “save face?” Did we all watch the same show? You know, the one where there’s a character who has barely any ego and sacrifices himself for his sister and friends over and over? I mean, if people are not able to understand the hero’s journey to this degree, I fear for the ability to grasp much media at all. When heroism is now being spun as selfish and egotistical, that’s not just a bad take, it’s a dangerous one.
Because yeah, we can say this is fictional and regardless of how people perceive Vax’s actions, it’s how he was written so people should bear with it and not be so offended. However, if you view a character’s act of heroism as inherently selfish, what if a person commits such an act in real life? Would you call them an egotistical person just doing it for vanity? If a solider chooses to leap onto on a grenade for comrades, we don’t say “wow, just doing it for his ego, what a loser.” No we honor such people because of the costs of their sacrifice. Are there some people who “play the hero” for attention? Sure, but that isn’t what this is. This isn’t a commentary on narcissistic manipulation. It’s a character journey that leads to one man standing up to a vile, liar of a villain so others can do the same.
Them writing Vax as a character who doesn’t submit is completely in line with his arc. It’s not about ego or pride when he doesn’t bow to Vecna. For one, the idea people seem to have that they would’ve been able to regroup had Vax given in and Vecna would’ve kept his promise is ludicrous. He’s a villain, since when are you supposed to trust anything a villain says? Especially when he had just admitted to spinning an unholy web of lies for so long to convince them to kill him so he could resurrect. But yeah, sure, that guy would just let Vax go so they could regroup.
Second to add onto this, he chose Vax purposefully. He knew that Vax’s abilities as the Champion of the Matron of Ravens was one of the only possibilities of stopping him and he was glad Keyleth had effectively taken that away. So his challenge is to Vax specifically because he holds a grudge against the one person who truly does stand in his way of taking power, namely the Matron and her Champion. In Vax denying him even the satisfaction of submission, it’s him still saying that the Matron and her Champion won’t give him the control he wants.
People just think that his death is so meaningless. My question then would be, what to you makes a death meaningful? Grog and Pike had just discussed this very thing when he was trying to wake her up about The Whispered One and she gave him her blood because she too had believed that everyone’s death before had been for nothing. But Grog pointed out that he died for Pike and her father died for them. Just because someone chooses to die and someone else calls it a shame and worthless doesn’t mean it was so. For Vax’s character that death had a lot of meaning. Especially because of what he has to weigh in the balance of making that choice. He knew he was free of the Matron’s curse, he knew he could have a life with Keyleth and yet the importance of showing the world you do not have to bow to a liar and a villain was more important in that moment.
The reason Vox Machina is so enjoyable, at least to me, is because these characters have flaws and behave in a highly realistic, relatable way. They’re not perfect and can really fall on their face. That’s what happened with Keyleth. People’s inability to admit she made a selfish decision because they consider it anti-feminist to say so is absurd. It’s just narratively true. The others only bowed because they wanted to support her. You can see they disagree and are uncomfortable with the choice. Grog even tries to move forward until Pike discourages him. But it’s this well-rounded character growth and development which makes the story great. If they all just made the expected choice, they wouldn’t be the characters we like anymore.
People are welcome to have differing opinions, the problem here is the overarching idea that a heroic action is actually the selfish one vs capitulation which isn’t true at all. That’s the problem with driving these takes that Vax is the one in the wrong here, because he in no way is. It’s just fascinating to me that people are trying to spin something objectively good and an honestly incredible character journey into something nasty.
Absolutely. The idea that TWO(Vecna) would have let them live is ridiculous. Even more, what would they have done if the whole team had kneeled, even if he did however unlikely, let them go? Who would follow them? No one would have trusted them again. By Vax standing firm, he essentially becomes a martyr and there's a possibility they can build a resistance off that.
Vax died for the best of reasons, he's a true hero. I think people are forgetting his AND Vex's arcs have been about learning widen their worldview (remember the first thing we hear about them "Vax and Vex only care about themselves") because for most of their lives they only had each other and after they were taken from their mother, who was killed while they were gone, and were emotionally abused by their father. (Honestly I'm wondering if they even saw this is Syngorn? I'd be kind of interested in their father Syldor's reaction to his son being disintegrated refusing to kneel to mad god wannabe). Both of them have self worth issues, of feeling worthy and felt they could only depend on and trust each other. Vex's arc to overcoming that has been largely focused on Percy and from their becoming a leader herself in Whitestone. Vax's has been more one of faith, giving his faith to others. That's where he serves something larger than himself. The matron is the guardian of the transition between life and death. His and Keyleth's relationship has always been more complicated because she's meant to lead her people and to live 1000 years longer than him(even if he'd lived his full natural life), while he serves a goddess. (honestly in the long run it worked out better for them)
If anything it was Keyleth who was (understandably imo) selfish. Last season was about gaining her voice, this season seems to be about learning when NOT to use it. (Also important for a leader). As far back as EP 2, after the Kraken, she gives a whole rather arrogant actually "you don't know what leadership is about speech" only to be told we've already decided you passed your Aramente all hail the Voice of the Tempest. Meaning yeah they already know leadership is about protecting people. This season she kept pushing and pushing a "cure" on Vax and he rather understandably didn't particularly want to die, but he did come to accept it and he was willing to die to save Pike and stop Vecna and she kept interfering.
The fact is Vecna can only be stopped if Vax dies, the two events are meant to be tied together. People seem to be forgetting that Vax was able to see the Matron BEFORE Vex died, and before they ever heard about the Vestiges of Divergence. He first saw her in Emon. And the Matron herself was shocked he could. It was literally fate that brought them together. THIS is Vax's path. They tried it Keyleth's way, that obviously did not work.
I think as a druid, and leader of druids, its probably important for Keyleth's own journey to learn there are things she can't just WILL to change, that there are more powerful forces out there and that just because she can do something doesn't mean she should. They mirrored her story to Delilah's for a reason. Both of them would do anything to save their love, Delilah turned to an evil wannabe god, and Keyleth went against a god who was genuinely trying to help save their world.
Also as Voice of the Tempest, she has a responsibility to her people first and foremost and her people just saw their leader immediately bend the knee to a terrible villain for entirely personal reasons. But sure Vax is the selfish one. (And I don't say that because I think it makes her a bad person, it's more of a point about how you can twist anything as selfish if you try hard enough, so if we're going to talk selfish, there's a bigger argument that SHE is the one being selfish in this situation) Vax's responsibility is to the Matron, Keyleth may not want to accept it but he's been open about that, he will support Keyleth anyway he can in her responsibilities but he does take his service seriously, which Keyleth herself acknowledges when she's yelling at the Matron drunk, "a man who champions you so fiercely".
As I said he and Keyleth's relationship is complicated by their larger responsibilities. Unlike Vex who shares in Percy's responsibility to Whitestone, Vax and Keyleth's responsibilities are in different directions and aren't really something they can share. Neither is perfect balancing them, they do the best they can.
Keyleth wants to defy fate with no consequences (she gets a happy ending, Vax gets to live), whereas Vax has consistently been willing to suffer consequences so other people can live. They literally hang a lampshade on it episode 6, where he talks about fighting for something he won't live to see. Yes of course he WANTS to live to see it, no he isn't ready to go BUT he is willing to live with the consequences so his sister can live and be happy, so Percy can live and be happy, so Vecna can be defeated, etc.
I'd even say this ties into Pike's arc. She wants Pop-pop alive, Grog alive, Vecna is playing into this - no one has to die, once I'm a god, everyone dead will be brought back to life, it will be good times for everyone!!
Now of course anything can be used against someone, even selflessness, but the point is Vax is willing to accept the consequences on to himself. The fact that something can be used against someone doesn't make it selfish. It wasn't selfishness that made Vox Machina get back together to fight Vecna, but he was able to create a situation that used it against them anyway.
(And I mean it wasn't really Tary who brought them together, it was Keyleth's coronation, which they almost certainly would have gone to anyway, which Vecna's followers then attacked, Tary's getting in, uninvited, just led to the next clue, but he didn't bring them together, Spike and Greg😉 just sent him Percy and Vex and he happened to be there when they got the invitation, and he then forced his way in to the coronation)
Finally decided to finally post my fanfic submission from the Rayllum zine on Archive of our Own for this year's Rayllum month! This fic contains two of my fics that I posted for the 2024 Rayllum Month prompts "Thinking of You Under Every Full Moon" and "Hands/Touch-starved" that have been heavily reworked and combined, along with a lot of new sections that I added afterwards. Here's to another year of loving these blorbos! ❤️
🧣Birthday
Callum stood in the balcony away from all of the music and chatter of his birthday party. Holding back tears, he locked his eyes on the almost-full moon that lit up the sky. It wasn't that he didn't appreciate Ezran's and everyone's efforts to celebrate him, but… all he could think about… was her.
So many questions dwelled in Callum's head as his heart grew heavier. Was she looking at the moon now too? Was she still thinking of him? Was she still taller than him? Did her beautiful silvery hair grow longer? Most importantly, will he ever see her again?
Callum gripped the railing then looked away. He wanted nothing more than for this day to be over. He would rather drown himself in his high mage duties than be here; surely looking forward to the Tome of Translation would be a helpful distraction.
Homecoming🌕
It’d been days since Rayla left Scumport, after she decided she was going back to her chosen home. She remembered that today was the anniversary of when she left Callum. Her stomach dropped when she also remembered that she failed to complete the very mission she left for in the first place. On one hand, she was excited to see Callum again, but on the other, she knew that she wouldn't be greeted with hugs and kisses after leaving him for two whole years.
She looked up at the moon and knew for a fact that he would be looking at it too. Her muscles tightened up as she thought about what he might be going through at the moment. Then, all she could think about was how she could face him after all this time. How can she make things right with him and ease the hurt she caused him? Rayla halted, then took a deep breath. Relax Rayla, She thought to herself before proceeding. You're finally going back to Callum, you should be excited to see him again! He'll surely be glad to see you too!
🧣Tome of Translation
The sun finally shone through the window on Callum's face the next morning. His birthday was finally behind him. No more sorrows or longing, just another day of more high mage duties. When Callum sat up on the side of the bed and wiped away his sleep, he was startled by a crow that abruptly flew through his window and landed right on his lap. Wrapped around its neck was a ribbon containing a tiny note. Callum grabbed it and unrolled to read the Associate Crow Lord's message. His eyes widened. The Tome of Translation was finally here!
Callum jumped out of his bed and ran to the bathroom to wash up and brush his teeth. He then grabbed a hair brush to fix his bedhead, drew a wind rune with his finger and blew his bangs to the side. He looked at his reflection in the mirror and smiled. Perfect, He thought to himself. Now all he can focus on is translating the runes on the mirror and learn it's secrets. And best of all, no distractions.
Wandering🌕
After leaving a sleeping Callum earlier, Rayla strolled through the palace grounds, smiling as she gazed all around her. She couldn't help but reminisce about the time she spent here after the battle of the Storm spire, when she and Callum grew closer and got to know each other better. It was a time when their relationship was in its honeymoon phase, of course, aside from her constant nightmares.
She felt her heart thumping harder as her mind shifted to when she screamed in agony after she saw Callum trapped alongside her parents, who she still had no idea what happened to them.
After all this time, she failed to find the slightest clue as to whether Viren was gone or not. Because of the panic that had overtaken her after seeing him in the moon nexus, her relationship with Callum was no longer what it was.
Her shoulders slumped and she sighed as she kicked some rocks in her path. Stella noticed Rayla's slowing pace, to which she softly stroked her cuddle mama's cheek.
Rayla cringed as she reflected on her messy reunion with Callum last night. She wondered if perhaps she found the right things to say, maybe things could've gone more smoothly with Callum. Regardless, she knew he would've remained mad at her, as she did hurt him. She just kept wondering how she could make it all right: What the right way for her to apologize was and whether he would accept any form of apology from her.
She didn't realize how far she had walked until a melancholic cello tune broke her out of her trance, which also made her notice the sky above her darkening. She followed the direction of the sound, leading her to the Valley of the Graves. She gasped when she saw Ezran and Zym on the stairs of the platform ahead. Those two sure have grown a lot, she thought. She paused, took a deep breath, then made her way over as the music was reaching its end.
🧣Relief
Callum sat at the edge of the Storm Spire, looking up towards the birds that were once his teacher now flying in the bright morning sky. His teacher, who taught him more about the depth and meaning of the sky arcanum beyond spells. His teacher that he went back to and impressed greatly after he finally learned how to spread his wings and fly after he saved… His teacher that he went to learn magic from to take his mind off of…
Callum flinched as he tried to silence his thoughts. Now was not the time to think about this. Not with Aaravos… who not just a while ago was able to rob him of his agency over his own body… The air got caught in his throat as he tried to shake it off. He tried so hard to snap himself out of that moment, to at least breathe. He then remembered when he woke up and found himself laying in… Rayla's lap…
Despite his anger towards her, knowing that she caught him when he fell still brought a sense of comfort to him. He finally exhaled to let himself cool off a little bit.
🧣Fire
Callum sat in front of the campfire and felt his cheeks growing warm after Ezran had him open up about Rayla. He clenched his fists as he continued to process his feelings for her. It wasn’t like he didn’t long to hold her again, but he just couldn’t bring himself to. He couldn’t even bring himself to look at her without feeling agitated.
Callum let out a sigh as he released some of the tension in his chest. He just needed some more time to work through his feelings before he was ready to be close to her again. Callum then felt Ezran's hand on his shoulder, and he looked towards his little brother with an attempted smile as he put his hand over Ezran's. He then reached for his sketchbook and flipped through the pages. Nothing would help him now more than brushing up on his sky runes.
Breeze🌕
Rayla was about to doze off in the breeze dome Callum made, but that didn’t ease the tension she felt after he didn’t move an inch for her when she said she was cold. After all, it wasn’t like she was actually cold or that she hadn’t had to sleep in the cold before. She finally came back and she got to see Callum again, only for him to be so cold towards her. No matter what opportunity she tried to speak with him or be around him, he kept pushing her away. She longed for his hugs, or even just to hold his hands, to simply tell him she was sorry for the pain she put him through, but she knew first and foremost that he needed to heal — that she needed to give him the space he needed for that.
After all, it wasn't like her relationship with Callum remained stagnant. She remembered the glances they'd been giving each other and more recently, when he had been comforting her over her guilt for leaving Soren. Revisiting these memories made her smile as she held Stella tightly in her arms, finally able to sleep.
Last Chance🌕
Massive rocks fell all around Rayla as she swiftly leapt forward and dodged. She heard Stella let out a few whimpers when they would nearly get crushed and Rayla reached to hold onto her tightly. Despite the mountain crumbling all around her, Rayla needed to find her way out. This time, it was towards the front entrance. She huffed and puffed, beginning to fumble as she continued on, but now wasn't the time for her to fall behind.
Ever since she set her mind on reuniting with Callum, Viren having nearly been in her clutches no longer mattered. She realized that the best way to keep Callum safe was to stay by his side and she didn't return and grow closer to him only to throw all of that away now.
She finally saw the light at the mountain entrance…but it was surrounding a roaring Rex Igneous. Rayla patted Stella as she quieted her steps and attempted to sneak around the dragon. She made it out of the mountain, but then…
SMASH!
Just as the great archdragon turned and repeatedly swung his tail against the wall, Rayla looked up in horror to find a pile of rocks burying her.
Then, there was darkness… or so she thought.
🧣Together🌕
The team was now riding on Zubeia after barely escaping Umber Tor. Rayla kept thinking about that hug that Callum finally gave her. A smile made its way on her face as she felt the blow of the cool breeze. She was more than glad to be back with Callum and every one of her closest friends again. She jumped a little when she felt a touch on her shoulder and looked up to find Callum coming to sit next to her. Smiling, he engulfed her hand in his, to which Rayla closed her own hand around. A nice warmth flowed between them as she smiled back at him. Their bond was beginning to heal and the distance between them was finally shrinking.
As a geologist, I would like to dispute Zuppi’s original statement. Drinking is basically really intense licking and therefore has a scientific purpose. 🤓☝️
