Architect Norma Alarcon and Architect Joey Saguindan

If you’ll ask me who made me who I am now and make me believe that I can always make it, these two people are the major reasons why I love and I will always love UST College of Architecture. Everytime I have this feeling that I can’t they always pop-out in my mind telling “I CAN”.

Though I’m not the BEST Student these two had, the way they value me matters more than the grade and remarks they gave me. I appreciate every single detail in my life they contributed and help me make it. 

Architect Alarcon doesn’t only looks a lot like my mom, she is in her own ways. She wrote me a letter on my birthday, and signed my book telling me this “Good Luck on your career as an Architect”; my heart melts every time I remember everything she have done to me. 

Architect Saguindan is the most professional professor I ever had. He values his profession and loves his students, I salute this man for teaching us everything under the sun. He will always make sure that all of his students juice out what he teaches and learn. 

Others may not agree with me, but with regards on how much impact my professors have done in my life- they are the one who influenced me a lot. 

They’re in UST not because they need to, they are in UST because UST and us as they’re students need them. Profession and Passion that’s who they are.

It’s been a month since the oath taking ceremony and I was too busy to blog about it, but now here it is! We made it! After long hours of dilemmas, stress, doubts, and round ups of review, here we are- the newly licensed master plumbers.

I honestly thought I wouldn’t make it because the 2 day examination was too hard to know if you made it or not. It is really a blessing dropped down the earth! The results was released in three working days and in those 3 days, I can’t contain my emotions. I don’t know if I will accept the fact that I will not make it or stay positive and wait for the results. I am also glad that 6 out of 6 in our clique made it, and more of my batchmates & friends in UST too. #SquadGoals it is!

Developing Effective Study Habits

Below are some tips to help you develop the attitudes and habits which lead to success:

1. Take responsibility for yourself, and your failure or success.

2. Understand that you’ll need to priorities the way you use your time and your energy. Make your own decisions, and don’t let your friends dictate what’s important, and how much you should work.

3. Figure out when your most productive work times are, and the types of environments where you work best.

4. Try to understand the material well – don’t just memorize what the textbook says. If possible, try to explain it to a friend.

5. Try something else if revision doesn’t help. Don’t just keep reading the same things again.

6. Then, if you still don’t understand ask for help. It’s not going to magically fall into place.

7. Study with a friend, and share ideas, and test each other on what you’re meant to know.

8. Keep working and revising throughout the term so the material stays fresh and is easy to retrieve.

Thesis Delibs 101

I have been in hiatus for the past months, because I am too busy at work and a lot of things. The next generation of Thesis Defenders are in the run for tips and advice from the graduates. I personally admit that I had my own cold feet and “I almost gave up” moments. But as a successful defender, and now a graduate, here are some of the things that I learned from my experience, and from my fellow graduates as well:

1. Get Up, Dress Up & Show Up.

This is the basic. If you really want to pass and graduate, don’t you dare do the “NO SHOW” thing when it is your time to defend your thesis. 

You’ll surely panic on the day itself, most especially if you’ll do the binding, printing, plotting, and everything you need to prepare beforehand. Even if you’re in the run, keep yourself together- tight. Believe that you will make it, even if you think you are running late, still go. 

These “Parang di na ako aabot”, “Parang di ko yata kaya”, “Baka hindi ako pumasa”, “Ayoko na”, etc. kind of mentality will just kill your vibe. Always be optimistic. Don’t let your fear overpower the hard works and sleepless nights you’ve been through for more than a year. 

2. Know Your Thesis By Heart.

A good presentation is not only based on your realistic renders, design solutions, strategies, planning, and the like; it is deep in your heart. 

You surely are the one who made your plans right? You have your research with you. You may not run over all the information and facts, but you have the basic knowledge on what your thesis is. 

That’s why you were given the chance to choose your thesis, it is in order for you to dedicate your heart on what you think is your calling. 

Show your jury that you are confident enough on what you are telling them. Show them your burning passion. Even if you may not know some of the answers to their questions, you will get through it if you know your thesis by heart. Come on, believe in yourself and your thesis. That’s the major key.

3. Don’t Compare Yourself

So what if there are a lot of your fellow students that can make realistic renders? While yours are too basic.

So what if you are in line with the design competition champions? Do you consider yourself as a mediocre? Or a loser? 

So what if the guy/girl before you got flat 1.00? Do you need to beat it? How sure are you that you can’t have the same thing?

5 years is a tear jerk roller coaster ride, it’s hard and painful. You will slowly realize that your knowledge and skills are not good enough, but never ever compare yourself. Each one of us have our own ways in coping and surviving college life, you are already a step away from your dreams- will you just give up? Really?

No plans are made 100% identical. Neither is your thesis. So are you. 

Smile, yours is unique in its own tiny ways. 

4. Carry Confidence. 

You will surely get some cold feet, hands and a shaky body. I know it’s hard to keep calm, but you need to. Or just hide it with your confident smile. Stand straight, and do it like a pro. If there will come a time that it is really hard for you to make an eye contact, look at their foreheads. At least you won’t be bothered by the facial expressions they make to distract you. 

Just be confident. Like you know what you are saying, and you mean it.

5. Eat

No sleep? or worst... No Ligo(Bath)? 

I have seen a lot of students who showed up restless, tired, oily, stressed, and name it all- they exist. But even if you’re cram skills and clutch tendencies arrive (and evident), don’t forget to eat! At least eat a single piece of bread, drink water, and gather yourself together. 

The worst thing that can happen is you passed out. 

6. Have A Checklist!

Do not forget anything at home! Even if you look like a backpacker ready to climb a mountain with the amount of things you need to bring with you, don’t mind. Just bring everything. 

Back up files! Not just one or two, but three or more. Flash drive, External Hard Drive, CD, MicroSD, put your thesis in it. You’ll never know when will the PC drive nuts over a single presentation. There are a lot of people who failed due to technical reasons. 

Bring your own laptop. Even if the Dean’s Office/Faculty provide one. 

Thesis Book, Print Outs, A3, 15x20 copies, Boards, Etc., Bring what you need and probably would need. 

7. Listen Eagerly.

When it is the Q&A part already, always keep your ears and mind together. Listen well to the questions. While you listen, make use of that opportunity and time to think at that moment. If you understand well the question thrown at you, you can respond at your best. Just Focus. 

8. Pray.

When all else fails... No you will not fail. So does a prayer. :) Send your heart out, and pray that things will go well. All Is Well. 

Whatever is the result of your defense, at the end of the day you will just thank everyone, and everything you’ve been through. Finally, it is over. Hard works do pay off. You have proven that all through the years that you are in an architectural school, you have sum it up with a single idea that will matter- for you, for your audience, family, friends, and to the nation. (LOL) 

But seriously, what matters most is YOU DID IT! :)

Dear UST Growling Tigers,

It is indeed a tough game. You all did your best to tie and win the first game. Don’t be sorry, for you have done great.  

Yes, they have done great too (or better this time), but you know how to win this. You already did it before, and you can do it again. Besides, we have two of the Mythical Five here. Both waited a decade to own the championship again, it’s undeniably a furious battle for everyone.

Failure doesn’t define you, It molds you: to become better, to strive harder, to learn and be smarter, and to return stronger.

Don’t be discouraged by mean comments, memes, tweets, and other negativity- because no one has the right to discourage your hard works, sacrifices, efforts, and hearts. Never lose hope Tigers. Light up your souls!

“Kung sa laro nga nadadapa, sa buhay pa kaya?”

Ed, Have you forgotten what you stated last Sampung Sulyap? One game doesn’t define how great you are. Your excellence brought the team here, go home with the bacon. Focus. You know you can do this.

Sheriff, you are the fountain that sustain the team. Keep your eyes sharp for open chances.

Abdul, you have the biggest heart here and you can drive it hard to dominate. Your improvements are good enough to carry the team on top.  

Vigil & Lao, be swift and unexpected. You can catch them off guard. Add the charms, and we will do the vigil for you guys.

Lee & Subido, keep the versatility alive. You’re the hidden gem of this team, and you’ll do more great things soon.

05, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 Hello guys! You all have your fair share in making this championship possible. Surprise us and the opponents on what you can offer. Let’s keep the Thomasian spirit alive, we are praying with you.

YJ, we are all ready. We are the proud crowd. Ganaremos!

Kevin, thank you for leading the way towards this championship, for inspiring the whole team with hearten words, and setting a good example. This journey wouldn’t be possible without you. You are one of the greatest captains that I have seen so far, your games are well played and critically planned. One down, two to go. Win = Cake. Kaya mo ‘yan. Kaya niyo yan. :)

The Growling Tigers can do it together with you Coach Bong, continue to uplift their spirits and be their guide in keeping the faith within their selves.

By the way, Benavides won’t forsake us. He founded UST for a reason.

Break their intense defense and don’t let them beat the buzzer. Even the best player in the world can’t beat the best team that works hard together towards the same goal.

And please stop bashing our players like you know their battles. Do not compare, for they are incomparable. Always remember that no matter what happen, we are proud of you.

This Championship is ours. We are with you. We may not be dribbling the ball with our own hands, rebounding for a chance, shooting a free throw, or doing a man-to-man defense against the enemies, but we are all here for you. The “Go USTe!” chant is not just our cheers but our hearts, an offering shared for all your sacrifices- symbolizing that we are one.

The fact that you are in the finals this season is already a pride for the whole Thomasian community. Aren’t we tired landing as “Second Best” most of the time? Somehow we/you are, that’s why we all strive to be on top in the best way we/you can. You are the best without a doubt. And despite all of these, you still manage to keep yourself grounded. Proud of you guys!

There is no such thing as defeat, just a learning experience. Don’t forget to enjoy this season.

You already made it here, you can get through this. You can end it well, and win the war.

UNIVERSITY BELT DISTRICT MONORAIL SYSTEM (DESIGN PLATE)

“Designing Architecture that coexists with nature symbiotically”

This particular phrase was already given by the design cluster, with this I considered the nature itself in Sampaloc, Manila aka the U-Belt. Since nature is not that evident anymore in the urban areas, considering the macroclimate is more applicable. In addition, the environment of the place was taken consideration, including how historic Manila is on its own, and blending in the monorail system in the existing old houses in Manila that are still preserved. It is an open fact that our railway system now has no sense of place, it doesn’t reflect Filipino identity nor the preservation of what is known to be truly ours. 

In this particular design, incorporating the “Bahay na bato” concept and Minimalism adds some touch of how Sampaloc used to be. 

Vegetation are added to decrease the carbon in the city, it also helps in adding some fresh and soft appeal in the city. 

Since urban areas are too crowded already and high-rise buildings overpower small structures like a monorail station. it is good to allow more natural light to penetrate. Since people in the station come-and-go, they don’t mean to stay longer, skylight would help decrease electricity consumption during the day.

Ventanillas are also incorporated in the design to allow a free flowing air all throughout the structure. 

It is an open fact that the University belt is prone in flooding, therefore collecting rainwater will help decrease the amount of water that will cause the flood. This can also help the structure itself to use recycled water in its comfort rooms.

I am a regular commuter, but I think our railway systems are somewhat an eyesore for they are covering the existing beautiful structures around the city, and causes the roads to be darker even in the morning. Hence, if we will be able to blend in the design well, it would not only aid our transportation industry but will also increase the appearance quality.

MANAOAG DESIGN PLATE: (1 of 7) THE CHAPEL

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY:

“Architecture should not just function as a building, its function should branch out further into interacting with its users, influencing them whenever possible.”

DESIGN CONCEPT:

“FISH” or “ICHTYS”

It was originally a symbol for Jesus used by early Christians. Before the Christians adapted it as a fish, it was known by Pagans as “Womb” that symbolizes fertility. 

Fishbone like louvers agains east-west glare are located on both sides. 

Aisles on the side are provided to allow people to roam around the chapel. The tail of the fish is the main entrance.

The fish’s body is the main congregation area.

Water surrounds the fish which symbolizes baptism.

The Baptismal space is located outside to allow the view of a pond like baptism which is originally done by john in areal body of water.

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY: “Architecture should not just function as a building, its function should branch out further into interacting with its users, influencing them whenever possible.”

DESIGN CONCEPT: 

“Prayer/Praying Hands”

The upright manner of two palm that directly points above to heaven is a symbolic manner of allowing ourselves to talk to God. 

Open palms allow the concept of “gateway”.

And adding up details to support design in architectural manner.
