I got asked if what I said yesterday was about ‘pro-shipping’ and though it was not, I’d like to elaborate on my stance on that. I hate censorship. I love dissecting toxic and complicated relationships between adults in fiction. I touch on dark themes in my work. There is genuinely a problem with purity politics in some fandom spaces and a demand that the characters and relationships portrayed in fiction must be morally sound and pure. To me, this is a completely different thing than the not insignificant amount of adults who are engaged in drawing and creating pedophilic ship art, uncritically normalizing and fetishizing relationships between children and adults. Those were the fandom spaces I was groomed in as a child. That is when fiction affects reality because the fiction is being created like a lure cast in to the world to catch vulnerable children.
In short, I think pedophilia is bad and people should be allowed to enjoy Hannibal Lecter wanting to erotically consume Will Graham. These are two vastly different topics to me. The terms ‘pro-shipper’ and ‘anti-shipper’ are fucking useless at this point because they mean so many different things to different people.
