I need to start a list of my pet peeves in my field. Like:
1. When people/media outlets take photos of people in distress and donāt include a name (especially if the person is deceased). This isnāt a hard and fast rule. I understand that sometimes a personās name is protected according to their wishes or for their own safety, but like... In all cases? Nah. You made a choice to not get their name, and I want to know why that is.
2. Buzzwords that we all know are going to be dated very, very quickly, likeĀ āotheredā/āothering.ā I sympathize. It seemed very useful at the time. But we are all going to regret it, likeĀ āre-present.ā
3. Just the whole tenure system.
4. Saying your department is committed to interdisciplinary study/research then denying and/or restricting your resources to other departments or rejecting collaborative projects between departments.
5. ALL BINARISTIC THINKING FIGHT ME ON THIS. FIGHT. ME. FIGHTME.
6. Freudian arguments in feminist theory.
7. Just the whole Age of Enlightenment at this point tbh.
8. Intentionally obtuse writing whose legibility is entirely dependent upon terms of your own making that are NEVER DIRECTLY DEFINED.
9. The Chicago Manual of Style saying my footnotes have to be double-spaced. I know why you did it, and itās cruel and inhumane.
10. Paywalls.

So. I made my semester schedule in early December. Then I change my semester schedule because it conflicted with the course I was assigned as a TA. Then, I find out, less than two days before classes begin, that the course that I TA has been changed without notifying me at all.
I dropped out of a course that I really wanted to take because it conflicted with the course I thought I would TA, and I picked up a course I really didnāt want to take because it didnāt conflict. But also, with the initial TA assignment, I only had to commute two days out of the week (itās an hourās drive away, so I lose anywhere from 2-3 hours every time I commute). Now I find out (again, without anyone telling me this was happening) that I will be going in four days out of the week. By the way, this is after Iāve told several people that Iām working on a major project with that I would be available on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Now Iāll be lucky to keep Fridays free.
Listen. I know people have worse commutes Monday through Friday. And that would have been fine if I had known that from the start. But I spent the break planning out how exactly I would manage my time this semester based on a schedule that has just gone completely out the window without anybody telling me and I am not handling it well. I have an exhibition going up in March that I still have to format, print, design and distribute promotional material for, and install on my own. I was planning on those two days off from commuting to get that shit done and now Iāve lost it and no one even bothered to TELL ME THIS WAS HAPPENING.
