Kaworu was made by Seele for the sole purpose of manufacturing the plans laid out in the Dead Sea scrolls. Kaworu was made to die, and in doing so, bring about the end of humanity as we know it.

When Kaworu turns to Shinji and tells him, “I think I was born to meet you,” it’s not just him trying to flirt with the cute pilot of Eva Unit 01. He’s rejecting his original purpose. He decides that rather than having been born to die, rather than being born to act as a part of the series of events leading up to human instrumentality, he was born to meet and connect with this one person. A person who was both rejected and abandoned by his parent, who has literally never been told “I love you” by anyone, who both craves human connection and is utterly terrified of it. Kaworu vocally declares that his purpose for having been born is to connect with that one person. This meeting, this moment, Kaworu decides that this is what he was born for. It’s why in his final moments, he tells Shinji that he “made his life meaningful.” It’s why he decides in the rebuilds that his new goal is to show Shinji true happiness. And it’s why Kawoshin is and will always be my favorite pairing of all time. Kaworu is the first and only person to ever show Shinji unconditional love for simply existing, and Shinji gives Kaworu a reason beyond death for having been created.

btw someone mentioned Kaze to Ki no Uta as the origin of the trope and while it’s important to mention i wanted to keep the focus on non-shounen ai manga/anime bc i think it’s really funny how authors will be like “i will only allow gays in my story if one of them is dark haired and the other light haired”
