one thing that's great about the song of ice and fire books is the way nobody ever knows what the fuck is going on. like somebody in a bar will be like "long live good king renly!" and somebody else will be like "oh he died. like a month ago. yeah lady catelyn stark stabbed him" and somebody else will be like "actually I heard he was stabbed by a shadow his brother fathered on a priestess" and a fourth person will be like "wait didn't renly literally just win the battle of king's landing last week" and then they're all like "well, whatever. long live good king whoever it is now. next round's on me"

More Dorne posting: It's interesting to me that Dorne is very much an Orientalist fantasy, but because it's the older type of Orientalist fantasy about the Middle East/North Africa (and broader Islamic World, especially since the main historical inspiration seems to be Moorish Spain, including the choices of filming locations for a lot of the Dorne scenes in GOT) that's in many ways the opposite of the kind of Orientalist stereotypes of the region that became more common post-9/11 (and the first major encounter with Dorne in the series, A Feast for Crows, came out after that in 2005), a lot of people in the Song of Ice and Fire fandom don't seem to recognize it as such. And so you instead get a lot of people thinking that Dorne is somehow "subverting" those stereotypes. And you just want to say, uh, I hate to break it to you Mr. TVTropes but the idea of a fantasy version of the Middle East that is much more open-minded about sexuality and gender than Europe, and whose people have strong sexual appetites is not, in fact, a thing that George R.R. Martin dreamed up. Far from it, this was the predominant view of the region among Western Europeans for centuries....

i have a bone to pick with people who claim Oberyn got killed because “he was arrogant” or “he talked so much shit instead of just killing the Mountain” or “he was so full of himself yapping instead of fighting” etc..

this just tells me that some don't understand why he did it in the first place. if he wanted to “just kill”, he could've done so secretly with his poisons or in a way that wouldn't trace back to him.

Oberyn was determined to make the Mountain confess before his death in front of the crowd that he indeed r*ped and killed Elia and her kids by the orders of Tywin, so Dorne could prosecute Tywin for his crimes.

if the Mountain had died before Oberyn could force him to confess, the entire effort to bring justice for Elia and her kids would have been in vain, and the main offender would be on the loose, forever.

Oberyn's desperation for the truth to come out was the reason he didn't deliver a lethal blow to the Mountain, which unfortunately led to his own demise. Although he succeeded in killing the Mountain by poisoning his spear and giving this bitch a slow, painful death; it came at the cost of his own life and Tywin escaping justice.

So, when people talk about him 'talking shit,' the whole speech wasn’t about the Mountain or Oberyn's pride; it was Oberyn's desperation for the Mountain to confess and unveil the rumors, revealing the heartbreaking truth. Oberyn didn't deserve this ending, but what can we say?
