Every painting tells a story
When we look at any kind of painting, we are not only drawn to it by the visual qualities of it.The painting evokes sensations, it makes us wonder what the artist is trying to show. Especially when looking at an abstract piece, It is to some people intriguing as well as puzzling. Lets take Willem de Kooning’s ‘Excavation as an example. This piece is one of his most famous masterpieces.
In this piece de Kooning uses lines to form shapes which resemble birds and fish. If you look closely, you will see some shapes are more detailed, they look like feminine figures. the painting depicts women working in rice fields.
Sometimes we associate certain colours with different feelings or emotions, in abstract paintings some painters use colour as a means of expression. At times, the colour palette used in a painting reflects upon how the painter is feeling. For instance if there are different hues of red or black it could represent a sense of distress or fear, whereas yellow could evoke a feeling of happiness. Psychologically speaking, the context in which the colour being used is also important. it sets the scene of the painting and reflects the painter’s mindset.

Vasudeo S. Gaitonde
Gaitonde’s was a well known abstract painter from India, he used painting as a means of communicating his thoughts and imagination. I came across some of his work at the Peggy Guggenheim gallery in Venice, What made the work stand out to me was the color pallets used in each painting., These three painting were my favorite because to me the colors represent feelings. for me the blue represent a soothing tone and gives it a feeling of calmness, whereas the red and orange in the first painting give a sense of anger and rage.
Emily Kame Kngwwarreye
Kngwwarreye’s chose the abstract style as a way to alter the thought that Aboriginal art should be focused on traditional depictions. She was a leading artist in women’s art and rituals along with the Aboriginal Anmatyerr. This particular piece caught my eye because of the burst of natural colours like the hues of green and yellow. it looks very energetic and the detailed brush strokes give the painting texture.
The Key in the hand by Chiharu Shiota
This installation was from a piece that was included in the Japan exhibition at the Biennale. Chiharu Shiota, a Berlin based artist created this installation to show memories connected to people from different times. The installation consisted of 2 boats, a countless number of keys hung across the room with yarns, videos and photos. This was a very interactive piece and we were able to walk straight through it.
