Shipwreck, the last wave (detail)
By: Emilio Ocรณn y Rivas (1845-1904)
Leonardo da Vinci (1452โ1519) is one of the most intriguing personalities in the history of Western art. Trained in Florence as a painter and sculptor in the workshop of Andrea del Verrocchio (1435โ1488), Leonardo is also celebrated for his scientific contributions. His curiosity and insatiable hunger for knowledge never left him. He was constantly observing, experimenting, and inventing, and drawing was, for him, a tool for recording his investigation of nature. Although completed works by Leonardo are few, he left a large body of drawings (almost 2,500) that record his ideas, most still gathered into notebooks. He was principally active in Florence (1472โca. 1482, 1500โ1508) and Milan (ca. 1482โ99, 1508โ13), but spent the last years of his life in Rome (1513โ16) and France (1516/17โ1519), where he died. His genius as an artist and inventor continues to inspire artists and scientists alike centuries after his death .

Camille Pissarro (1830 โ 1903) was a Danish-French Impressionist and Neo-Impressionist painter born on the island of St Thomas (now in the US Virgin Islands, but then in the Danish West Indies). His importance resides in his contributions to both Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. Pissarro studied from great forerunners, including Gustave Courbet and Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot. He later studied and worked alongside Georges Seurat and Paul Signac when he took on the Neo-Impressionist style at the age of 54.
