“mental disability weilds more agency than mentally disabled people” -m.r. yergeau, 2018
everybody: you’ve got to advocate for yourself in medical settings!
medical professionals when a patient advocates for themselves in a medical setting (x100 if that patient is a part of any minority): damn. you’re a hypochondriac crazy bitch who has every mental illness and is seeking every narcotic in existence. that’s the only reason you’d be disappointed in the care you’re receiving here. in retaliation, we will be even less helpful and less sympathetic. our jobs are hard. people are dying. we don’t have time to deal with anyone who is slightly inconvenient for us.
angry at the psychiatric care system, more at 5
Disabled people are some of my favorite people. We're awesome!!!
When I say I want pysch meds to be less stigmatized I don't just mean people should be allowed to talk about the ways meds helped them, or talk about how they used to have depression and then meds cured them. People need to be allowed to talk about the way medication has harmed them and hurt them, about going off of meds, about the way the system forces meds onto people and doesn't care about their well beings, about side effects that most neurotypical people would find horrifying, about not wanting to be on meds, about being on meds but not magically becoming normal. The neurodivergent/mentally ill experience should not be watered down to make people comfortable, and especially not to make people comfortable with the largely neurotypical run medical system that often victimizes us as much as it helps us.
One thing i wish both drs and some other disabled people would stop saying that "pain cant kill you" bc it can. Literally, just too much untreated pain can stress ur body out so bad you have a heart attack or stroke or other potentially lethal medical event. And its 100% completely preventable, but opiod hysteria is so bad drs are giving people NSAIDs only for spinal surgery (real thing, i spoke to this person on twitter/X)
Pain kills. Stop demonizing pain medication

until more people inside the movement can actually let go of the idea that intelligence is a virtue, ND activism is going to remain glued to the floor.
'Cause people tend to not get the memo: People acting strangely in public is not a danger to you. Pacing, talking to themselves or something you can't see, laughing to themselves, stimming, twitching, ticcing, making "weird" noises--it doesn't fucking matter. They're not your personal freak show, they're not broken, they're not a murderer and they're definitely not going to be fucking helped by you calling the authorities or anyone else on em. These actions alone are not indicative of danger to you, as a random person on the street. Shut the fuck up and move on, leave disabled people alone.
