Examples of Chekhovās gun in Knives Out (2019)
Chekhovās gun (Russian: Š§ŠµŃ Š¾Š²ŃŠŗŠ¾Šµ ŃŃŠ¶ŃŃ) is a dramatic principle that states that every element in a story must be necessary, and irrelevant elements should be removed.
āIf you say in the first chapter that there is a rifle hanging on the wall, in the second or third chapter it absolutely must go off. If itās not going to be fired, it shouldnāt be hanging there.ā
āOne must never place a loaded rifle on the stage if it isnāt going to go off. Itās wrong to make promises you donāt mean to keep.ā -Ā Chekhov, letter to Aleksandr Semenovich Lazarev, 1 November 1889.
