The Denim Exchange Fashion Event
It's been a while since I posted something. I've been busy working on an event I have coming up on Saturday. I am beyond excited!!!
"Jazz It Up With Dignity" Fundraiser
I am proud to announce that I planned and executed my first major fundraiser from start to finish. On Friday, April 4, 2014, Dignity Housing hosted its 10th annual fundraiser at First District Plaza, located in University City.
The night began with cocktails and hor'derves during the VIP reception with music from Brett Jolly and Side by Sol. The main event began shortly after where guests enjoyed great conversation, delicious food catered by Bynum Brothers catering, and dancing at the end of the night. The room was decorated beautifully with floral arrangements created and donated by Falls Flowers.
The highlighted guests of the evening were Mr. Bernard Terrell, a single dad set to graduate from Dignity soon, and Ms. Willahmina Warren, a Dignity graduate. Both fearlessly shared their struggles and the significant events that led them to the doors of Dignity Housing. They shared their testimonies; giving credit to Dignity Housing for helping them get back on their feet and becoming self-sufficient.
Marjorie Shiekman, a proud Board Member of Dignity Housing for over twenty years, expressed her commitment to Dignity Housing and why she has supported Dignity for so many years.
Dignity Housing is a non-profit organization located in the Germantown section of Philadelphia. Dignity’s mission is to break the cycle of homelessness and poverty that confronts low-income families and individuals in the city of Philadelphia. All money raised through tickets sales, as well as during the event, benefit Dignity Housing and their efforts to continue providing decent, affordable housing, promoting self sufficiency, and creating opportunities beyond expectations.
Other moments from the night included the raffle and silent auction where guests purchased tickets for a chance to win prizes such as a gift card to Topper’s Spa/Salon, tickets to a Phillies game, and a beautiful necklace from Modern Bird Jewelry. Guests also had the opportunity to bid on an Orchestral Subscription Package to the Mann Center, four personal training sessions from WC Fitness Studio in Mt. Airy, and other wonderful items.
As the night ended, guests were in high spirits as they continued to share stories and dance the night away to the upbeat melodies of the band. Jazz It Up With Dignity proved to be a success!!
This experience is one that I will never forget. I was pushed beyond boundaries I did not know I could sustain. I received so many words of gratitude and praise for a job well done. The guests had an amazing time and were happy. Most importantly, the Board of Directors and Dignity Housing’s Executive Director were pleased and thankful for my hard work and efforts- awarding me with praise.
King Of Prussia Hotel Hop
The Hotel Hop in King of Prussia went off without a hitch. Twenty- four industry professionals toured and dined on some of the hotels’ most savory appetizers, paired with delicious cocktails and non-alcoholic drinks. Sheraton Valley Forge Hotel was the first stop on the tour, setting the bar high with views of their newly renovated ballroom and guestrooms. Valley Forge Casino Resort followed, exciting guests with tours of their casino and guest room accommodations. The Hyatt House welcomed guests with wine and mesmerized everyone with the chic, boutique look of their extended stay hotel. Guests enjoyed views of their over-sized guestrooms with deep, relaxing tubs; proving to be the ideal place for a peaceful stay.
Fourth on the Hotel Hop was the Crowne Plaza Hotel. Guests were greeted by staff and succulent appetizers and beverages. The sparkling apple cider was a favorite amongst everyone. Hotel staff toured the guests, showing the meeting room options available and guest rooms. The Doubletree Valley Forge Hotel was the finale hotel; catering to everyone’s sweet tooth. Guests toured meeting spaces and guestrooms; all given with a memorable presentation that had everyone laughing. At the end, guests met the head chief for the Doubletree, sampled seasonal desserts, and made caramel apples to take home.
Guests walked away from this experience with grab bags, souvenirs, and information from each hotel. Everyone left with a smile and feeling stuffed, confirming the success of the Hotel Hop.This was the first event I worked on from start to finish with Mid-Atlantic Events Magazine. It was nice to see everything come together and go so well. We received so many positive responses and feedback from everyone who participated in the event. It was a great night!
Helpful Tips On Purchasing Flowers For Your Wedding
Purchasing flowers for your wedding can prove to be costly. Whether your budget is tight or unlimited, here are a few tips to keep in mind and help you you stay within your budget:
Work with flowers that are in season. It is cost effective and you can negotiate pricing.
Be open to flower types.
Be mindful of the time of year. Red and white flowers are typically more expensive during the Christmas and Valentine's Day season. The price of flowers increase around Mother's Day as well. So, take that into consideration along with the season when selecting flowers.
When creating an arrangement, add less expensive flowers, fillers, and greens to create the effect you want. Consider using fruits and veggies instead of all flowers.
Be creative with the potting you use. Layer things. Meaning, use different elements of color such as ribbons and containers. Add accessories.
If you are working within a tight budget, use the same floral arrangements for both your ceremony and reception spaces to save money and/or stay within your budget.
Monitor your guest-list and bridal party. The more guests you have, the more tables you need and have to decorate with centerpieces. The larger your bridal party is, the more flowers you will have to purchase for them.
If you are in love with a special bloom and absolutely need it at your wedding, use the flower(s) in your bouquet instead of in your centerpieces.
Sometimes, if you provide your own potting, florists may offer a discount.
Be mindful that many florist will add a 20-30% labor fee in addition to the cost of your flowers.
If you think something will save you money or scale back costs, ask. It doesn't hurt. Just make sure what you are asking is reasonable.
Elegant Grace
Inspiration for a wedding at a non-traditional venue such as a lounge, a swanky restaurant or an artsy loft space with exposed brick, pipes, beams, etc. Or maybe at a gorgeous mansion or house in the backyard.
Networking, It's a MUST!!!!
So, I am sitting in Soy Cafe, located in Northern Liberties, enjoying a Strawberry Twist made of peaches, strawberries, ginger, soymilk, and honey. Pretty delicious I may say. I am busy typing away on my computer and trying to navigate my next move as I work hard to establish myself as an Event Planner and build my brand.
Let me tell you, this journey has not been easy. It has been difficult and many times I just want to give up. But then they say, hard work pays off. I don't know who "they" are but I do believe that anything worth while requires hard work and dedication. If you find it easy, RUN!!! I don't know. I guess it all depends on what you define as "easy", "hard work" ,or "worth while". Recently, I tried the "art of networking". It's funny because naturally I am friendly, chatty, and can talk to just about anyone. For some reason, I have not been able to dive into the world of networking. I mean, some people have it down to a science and should make networking a career. It seems to come natural to some. Me, not so much.
As an Event Planner, your business really happens because of the referrals and relationships you build with the people you meet. I can say I have been getting out and being more social. I have met a few people which is great. I can't say I am 100% comfortable networking; that will take time. I feel like my confidence will develop the more I get out and meet people, and actually begin networking as an Event Planner. I believe at that point, I will start to feel more comfortable, and things will begin to fall into place... Being afraid to meet people is not an option in this industry. In order to see things happen, you have to make things happen. I guess networking is about to become my full-time job....
Orange Glow
This inspiration board is for the bride/groom wanting a small and casual wedding. Key elements include:
Music ensemble to keep the guests entertained
A buffet or grazing stations would work well for this type of wedding.
A signature drink, wine coolers, sangria, lemonade, or ice tea are some of the drink choices you could offer your guests
If you want to be creative, a food truck would be something different and fun. I would only recommend a food truck for a wedding of no more than 50 guests. You don't want your guests waiting in line all day for their food.
Pretty In Pink
I created this inspiration board with the modern day bride in mind. The bride I envisioned for this type of wedding is someone who does not want a complete traditional wedding, but wants some elements of tradition with a romantic and light party atmosphere. The colors and dress I chose represent a young, kind of sassy but still elegant bride who isn't afraid to go outside of her comfort zone and is just ready to have fun.
Summer Cocktail Party
Cocktail parties are becoming the "new happy hour". They are fun, fashionable, and increasingly becoming more popular. The good thing about cocktail parties is that they are easy to plan and generally don't require hours of planning. Cocktail parties normally last a few hours and include finger foods, instead of a full meal, and delicious cocktails. A guest list for this type of event may include people who already know one another, people who are getting to know one another, or people who have never met one another.
Here are few tips to keep in mind when hosting a summer cocktail party:
Make sure you have enough supplies and that your bar is stocked for the evening. Nothing is worse than having to leave your own party to make a grocery store run. To avoid this, make sure you know how many guests will be attending so you are able to plan accordingly. Always have extra cups, napkins, food, etc. You can always send guests home with any extra food that is left over. If you have leftover napkins, forks, plates, etc., you can always save these items and use them at your next event.
Finger foods are always best with lots of yummy cocktails. Make sure you have a nice selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages to accommodate all of your guests. When deciding on food, choose a variety of finger foods from hot to cold.
Always have some type of music playing in the background. Sometimes parties start off kind of slow. Silence is not golden at a cocktail party. Prior to your party, spend time creating a playlist of music that will set the mood for the evening. Make sure it is music that both you, and most importantly, your guests will enjoy.
Always offer coffee in addition to water when serving alcohol at a party. Make sure everyone is drinking responsibly and are able to get home safely.
Last, have fun and enjoy yourself.
Here are a few decorating tips to achieve looks similar to those in the inspiration board:
To keep things budget friendly, you can use items you already have around the house or visit a local dollar store of craft store to purchase items for your table decor. As you can see in my inspiration board, I have chosen table decor that is easy to do. You can use bottles, vases, or jars you may have in the house and just add flowers. If you are on a budget, fake flowers will work just as well.
If you are going for a more edgy and fun look, add lots of colors and mix up the vases, jars, glasses, or whatever glassware you choose to use. Everything does not have to match. You can be creative. If you prefer a more simple and chic look, keep the decor basic by choosing one color, as shown in the picture of the three white candles in the inspiration board. If you want minimal color, keep the color light and basic and just add a table cloth for contrast. The tablecloth can be a solid color or whatever you choose to use.
As always, the key to decorating is knowing the tone you want to set for your event and going from there. In my opinion, the best places to pick up items for looks similar to those in the inspiration board are: Dollar Tree and Ikea.

Diner en Blanc 25th Anniversary
Last night I attended the official preview party for the 25th anniversary of Diner en Blanc which was great. Mind you, I had never heard of "Diner en Blanc" until I stumbled across the event announcement on Eventbrite just a few days ago. So, to give you a little background on Diner en Blanc. It was originally launched by Francois Pasquier and his close friends 25 years ago. After spending a few years abroad, he returned to Paris in the summer of 1988 and held a get together with his friends. So many of his friends wished to attend the gathering that he decided to have the party at Bois de Boulogne. He asked that everyone bring a guest and wear white so they could be spotted amongst one another. The event was such a success that they decided to have the event the following year, inviting more friends, which began the concept of Diner en Blanc.
The preview party was held at Williams-Sonoma in Center City. DJ Bruce was busy spinning, creating a nice vibe for the event. Food samples were provided by: Garces Catering, DiBruno Brothers and McCrossen's Tavern. Industry experts included: Carrie Denny (Editor for Philadelphia Wedding Magazine),Emily Goulet (Lifestyle Editor for Philadelphia Magazine), and Brian Crawley (Visual Director for Lord & Taylor) to name a few. I mean if you are into summer entertaining, planning events, hosting dinner parties, etc, this was the event to attend.
There was also a table decorating contest celebrating Paris and the 25th Anniversary of Diner en Blanc. My picks for the night were tables 5 & 9. I'm not sure which table was selected for the "People's Choice" of the night award, because I had to rush to the car before my meter ran out. Definitely did not need a ticket! But anyway, I chose tables number 5 and 9 because both were simple and sweet, and gave that feeling of summer; both elegant but casual in a sense. I could see myself having similar place settings and inviting friends over for a nice, intimate, outdoor dinner party or a cocktail party with just the girls.
Personal Pick #1
Personal Pick #2
There are so many ways to decorate a table for a special event whether it is on a large scale or small. Sometimes less is more depending on the aesthetic you are going for. My advice, if you know what you are serving, let your food be your inspiration, and just add flowers, candles or whatever accent piece(s) you may have to add a little something extra. Sometimes, you may only need a nice table cloth, decorative napkins, food, and you are done. Presentation, like most things, is the key. You don't have to overdue it!! Hope this helps.
A few more pictures of the event for inspiration:
