Managed to see Great Comet for the second time yesterday and my gods, it was just as stunning even from back of the circle!
Saved posting anything after the first watch (which was the last weekend of previews from the stalls) as didn't know if my reaction was purely "oh my God I'm actually watching my favourite show live for the first time" but nope, 100% this show is the most beautiful thing ever
Just a few thoughts under a read more in case, you know, spoilers
We had a cover for Natasha (read somewhere that may be due to an injury?) But actually I think the cover was just as good, if not BETTER than last time. She was more innocent rather than just headstrong, but bith actresses knocked it out of the park
Also Jamie has a cold and he did struggle with a couple of the high notes and was coughing up a storm, but he played it off well and still hit the note with "Petersburg!"
Sonya Alone broke everyone. The old guy next to me actually murmured "That was beautiful" under his breath, real testimant to the talent of this cast
Marya just straight up pulling a gun on Anatol still cracks me up. Plus audience was great and everyone was laughing at the right parts and clapping along in the club scenes.
Set is modern, like a nightclub feel, but speaking to a Russian fan who said it felt very much like Russia at the moment, so do with that what you will. Found the costumes a bit odd first watch having been so in love with the Broadway production however second time I was all in and went you know what, this works. (Although Broadway costume design my beloved!)
The comet at the end... I do not cry in theatres but both watches, tears were gathering as the voices swell beneath that circular glow. Now that scene I need injected direct into my veins...
Declan Bennets Pierre is gorgeous. Raw, powerful and broken, your heart bleeds. When people say he seems dull I am seriously confused about what show they're watching. He absolutely smashes the role. Honestly think he's my new favourite Pierre.
Wish I could get one more ticket but sadly, I believe that will be my last time seeing this... for now... Let us hope for a proshoot or transfer!
In honour of Ace week (slightly belated) here's a painting of Emma from The Prom singing Unruly heart using the colours of the Ace flag. Even though Emma isn't ace, the song meant so much to me when I first heard it, the whole idea of the heart doing what it desires no matter what the world thinks is a wonderful saying.
Okay I know I only ever come on here to talk about my random resurgent love of specific musicals but just. Come From Away is so fucking good yall.
The parts that always get me are the songs using multiple languages, specifically "Darkness and Trees (reprise)" and "Prayer" which both have that underlying theme of religion being international.
Now I am not a religious man, I have my own beliefs but they are easily swayed one way or another. However, the way the musical emphasizes and highlights that despite language barriers, a common viewpoint can bridge that gap easily. It doesn't just go for religion either, but that kindness. It took one act of kindness after another to show that words cannot beat actions, and your actions have impact.
I could rant for hours about Come From Away and how masterful it is
This. Come from away was the first musical I went to see live after covid and I tell you what something not different. After a time of people being scared and living in fear after losing loved ones, it just struck a new chord.
Prayer almost brought me to tears and as an atheist that shows just how powerful this show is.
The cube starts very uniform and rather out of place as it seems just I bit odd to the audience.
But as it gets ripped apart it becomes clear to the audience how it is just a collection if blocks that are used by the characters to play pretend.
This shows Marvin's attempt to control everyone by viewing life as a game and trying to get everyone to play along to his delusional view on life.
After Meldal is engaged to Trina, he tries to draw her out of the fictional world Marvin has created by physically moving Marvin's blocks and fighting with him in 'a tight-knit family reprise'
As trina breaks free from Marvin's childish world, more props are introduced on stage to signal her newfound freedom from him. She gets to move into her new life with Meldal, and u see them decorate their house together (which is incredibly sweet).
The second act starts with a set made from the cubes arranged in a dolls House like formation as if Marvin will continue living in him fauls reality.
But Marvin himself tears down the formation just before 'its about time' to show how he's developed and is awhere that he can't live life as if its a game.
In the second act it is clear that all the characters are living in reality instead of playing Marvin's pretend both due to the important topics Charrlotte is trying to fight for and the increased use of props spread out across the stage.

When Whizzer gets ill, the set completely shifts to be highly realistic with no use of the grey blocks at all. This shows how Marvin can't ignore things anymore and has to face Whizzers health.
Leitmotifs drive me insane, like I hear *repeated melody that has an association with a person, idea, or situation* and I go *tears up the fucking rug like a dog*
