You were both sitting at the lake, hiding in the shadow of a tree from the sun. Regulus sat with his back against the tree's trunk, book in one hand and the other draped around your shoulder and slowly massaging your head.
In front of you daisies, tulips and lilacs were dancing in the light breeze. The sun shone high in the afternoon sky, her rays reflecting on the lake's water.
You held your sketchbook, trying to sketch the scene in front of you. But you had already erased the sketch what felt like a millions times. Your thoughts kept wandering to the boy next to you. He didn't know how you felt about the boundaries of relationships. Not yet at least. The only one who knew was Lily. And you'd talked about it with her the day after you and Regulus were official. She'd said she trusted you to know that he would respect it. Respect you. She knew you wouldn't start a relationship with anyone who thought low of you. And you'd assured her Regulus was different. He'd never think of you wrong.
You'd taken her advice of talking to him about it as soon as possible to heart. But actually doing it was on a whole other level than imagining it. You had thousands outcomes in your mind. Most of them bad.
As you went over your rehearsed "speech" again you brought the gum to your paper and erased the sketch again.
A hand stopped the movement by closing its fingers around yours. 'It looked good.' You shake your head at your boyfriend his words.
'No, it didn't.' Regulus leans his head forward to take a better look at it. 'It looks good to me.'
'Well, you and I seem to see things differently.'
His brows furrow in confusion but you refuse to look at him. 'What do you mean?'
'Nothing, sorry. It's nothing.'
'But there is something, isn't there?' He doesn't get an answer but the scraping of your pencil on the sketch paper.
'Y/N? Would you look at me?' He removes his arm from around your shoulders and the movement makes you freeze.
'Did I do something?' He asks, his voice cautious.
That did make you turn around immediately. 'No!' You quickly shake your head. 'No, of course not.'
'Then what's on your mind?'
You avert your gaze away from him and look at the flowers. Regulus sees the way your hands tremble nervously and the way you pluck on your school uniform. He grabs them in his own in case you'll start picking at your finger nails and hurt yourself.
'I know there's something on your mind. I've been waiting for you to tell it yourself but you've been quiet all day.' He brushes his thumb over your knuckles. 'Talk to me.'
You breath in the fresh spring in air let it out slowly. You do this a few times to calm your raising heart.
'If I-,' you try to look at him but the moment your eyes meet you look back at the flowers and the lake. He squeezes your hands gently. Telling you this way to go on. 'If I told you I didn't want to kiss you. But in this scenario it is not because I don't love you anymore. Would you still stay with me?'
You don't look at his face, don't see how he reacts. Maybe you don't want to know how he does. 'Why wouldn't you want to kiss me in this scenario?' He asks after a few moments. His voice innocent. No cruelty or confusion in it. Just true curiosity.
'Because I don't feel comfortable with it. Doesn't matter how much I truly love you.'
'I would stay. I'll never leave your side.'
You look at him again. 'You would?' Now it was you who was cautiously.
'Why wouldn't I? I love you and you love me.'
'But what if, in this same scenario, I just wanted to cuddle with you. Only cuddle. Would you still love me?'
'Of course I would still love you.' He didn't seem to need to think about his answer.
'And what if I only felt comfortable with cuddling and kissing? Would you still stay and love me just the same?' You didn't look away from his gaze this time. His eyes soften when you look into them. He lets go of your left hand to brush away some hair that stuck to your eyelashes from the breeze. A small smile sets on his lips as he looks back at you.
'Relationships are more than sex. Otherwise they aren't true. And ours is true.' He stops you before you can talk by shaking his head lightly. 'I couldn't care for the world if you grew horns, a tail or if you never wanted to go there in a relationship. I love you. Only you.' You just look at him. Your eyes flickering from his left to his right. Searching for any regret of being with you, for any sigh that he just said that to not break you immediately.
But the only thing you could see is him, staring at you with adoration as if nothing has changed. Maybe nothing had changed in his eyes. You were still the same girl he fell in love with. Still the same girl that helped him through his family's bullshit. Still the same girl that made sketches of him to than shyly push away his compliments.
You were still the girl that blushed every time he would compliment you, or when he didn't say anything but just stared at you like he does right now. Like you were the moon in his hands, the answer to everything, the cure to every illness. As if you were a goddess yourself. Which you were to him if anyone would ever ask Regulus.
'You knew.' You say at last.
He grins down at you and nods. 'For a time now. You're not exactly good at hiding your discomfort when we watched those romantic muggle movies. Or the way you visible flinch and sigh in annoyance as James and my brother make a joke that's more than a kiss. Like making out.'
Your nose scrunches up the slightest. 'Just like that.' He gently runs his finger over the bridge.
Your eyes widen as the reality of his words settle in. 'If you knew it for a while and we've only been together for a week then-,'
'I knew when I asked you to give me chance and go with me on that date to hogsmeade.
'I just didn't say anything because I knew you would say it when you were ready to talk about it.'
‘So, we’re still just us.’ It wasn’t a question. You just said it aloud so you could relax your raising heart beat.
‘Just us. Forever.’ He cups your cheeks. ‘Whatever happens. I’ll stay with you as long as you’ll have me.’ He smiles cheekily.
‘Get ready because I’m not letting you go.’ You grin teasingly.
He laughs, resting his head against yours. ‘Me neither.’ He gives you a quick kiss, resting his forehead a few moments on yours before leaning back on the tree, not letting you go. You fall back against his chest, the sketchbook falling on the grass between your legs. ‘Reg!’ You laugh as you hit his chest playfully.
He just grabs you closer and begins to shower your face with kisses.
