This is fucking killing me. Like what
*introducing myself to the guards who caught me* seized to meet you
imagine being rose tyler and your hot butch boyfriend turns into a twink
I very much buy into the headcanon that The Doctor's sexual orientation changes with regeneration but at the same time that is such a funny idea. Imagine surviving a near death experience and suddenly you like men now.
SORRY for being crazy (but also not) but i love how eurydice being portrayed by a black actress gives a completely new layer to chant reprise (Hang a chain around her throat / Made of many karat gold / Shackle her from wrist to wrist… Bind her…) in playing opposite to a white orpheus, who is being told by the white capitalist hades… the layering of both misogyny and racism. of owning another person so completely. the misogynoir on complete display. the way jack wolfe plays orpheus as wholly disgusted at hades’ words. it’s the prison industrial complex. it’s the music and language already directly influenced by african american culture; the vernacular, the jazz, swing, working class people living under the thumb of a white person who gets rich off their labour. the environmental racism. euridicye can’t remember the last time she saw a flower. hades is destroying her home, polluting the air, digging up the earth until he literally buries her inside of it.
don’t get me started on persephone also being black. that’s a whole other thing i could go into.
Calli: We dream of the summertime during winter. We yearn for the winter during summer. What fatal flaw has God injected the human psyche with? Why must we always strive for the things furthest away from us?
Ina: …Are you okay?
Calli: My feet are cold as fuck, dude.
the original starlight express is, whether intentionally or not, a fairly conservative narrative that hinges on the audience taking stuff like gender roles and heteronormativity and christianity as these ubiquitous pillars of culture that dont need to be examined. its a tried and true underdog story about a hero who represents a return to the traditions and values of the past triumphing over symbols of more contemporary cultural shifts. it also deals heavily with themes of masculinity; the male characters pursuit of achieving and proving their masculinity through feats of athleticism and romantic conquest and the female characters valorizing and pursuing adjacency to masculinity through their own romantic subplots.
the london adaptation of stex is so compelling to me largely because it clearly recognizes and wants to subvert these story elements, but realistically it cant really rid itself of them while keeping the core of the plot intact. so like, greaseball is a woman now but shes still kind of a bragadocious male chauvinist archetype just minus the maleness and the rockabilly aesthetic. and honestly that rules and i thank god every day but its also just kinda funny because now the dynamic of the underdog character being beaten down by the hypermasculine jock and the personification of the 80s cultural shift towards the androgynous ambiguously bisexual superstar as an icon has been replaced by a cishet guy being bullied by a mean lesbian and her nonbinary worstie.
and then theres pearl. i think stex adaptations have been doing their best to shake this long before wembley but pearls original character feels very intentionally misogynistic. shes rustys love interest, and its clear from early on that she desires him on some subconscious level, but its presented like she doesnt know this herself because shes too frivolous and fickle and dare i say it a little bit slutty. shes the shiny new girl on the scene and she just wants to have fun taking a ride with every engine in town! in some versions this seems to be less her idea and more the work of the other coaches pressuring her to shop around before saddling herself with an apparent dud like rusty. rustys arc then becomes not just about victory for victorys sake, but his need to prove himself man enough, or engine enough, for the hard to impress pearl. tale as old as time. wembley stex does its best to scrub this subtext from its adaptation, but in the process it also kinda removes any context that would inform why rusty is so set on racing with pearl, or why she would refuse him when the other engines have been nothing but rude to her.
what happens as a result, at least for me, is that in absence of metatextual explanations for why anyone is acting the way they are, which would normally be informed by an understanding of and willingness to accept that Thats How Men/Women Are, you have to sort of invent/extract a diagetic reading of stex in which there are all these unspoken in-universe dynamics and hierarchies. coaches are no longer uniformly cast as women, so coaches are now a nongendered underclass within the context of the starlight express universe. why? possibly, because engines are needed for motion and trains that cannot operate under their power are undervalued in train society, despite their necessity in other areas. im fully making this up but like its plausible and, more importantly, its interesting! the societal implications of that are really interesting! and also, so so so fucking beyond the scope of anything any stex adaptation is equipped to cover during its limited runtime.
and well thats where freaks like me come in.
If I had a nickel for every time an actor who played a crow related character in my favorite show that got cancelled by Netflix went on to play Orpheus in Hadestown on Broadway, I’d have two nickels.
Which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice
things my best friend said when rewatching the next to normal proshot
"he's not gay, right??? why do the cute ones have to be gay?"
"i really can't ignore the kermit"
*replayed the fridge moment* "i didn't appreciate it enough the first time"
*VERY enthusiastically sang along to You Don't Know*
"he's definitely got the paul rudd effect, he doesn't look 30 at all"
*there's a world* "he's so good at singing, i would follow him too"
"awww noooo :( " x10000
we sang along the whole time, of course!
"I asked chatgpt"

Jekyll must be strict about his office hours
Henrys fine. He’s just like that
yeah he does that sometimes it's nothing to worry about

Statistics Update
Despite the fact that both USA and UK are staying at their respective levels of a little more than 25% and not quite 10%, this is really what the stats feel like.
I know that I joked about learning to spell the names of more American states by the end of 2026, but *please* send more variety. There are more than 100 countries with less than ten (10) visits, nearly 60 with less than five. We still have so many places to visit.
New decades of the week: UK 🇬🇧 (duh) with 510, Spain 🇪🇸 with 70, Sweden 🇸🇪 with 60, Aotearoa 🇳🇿 with 40 and Taiwan 🇹🇼 30.
Be careful which bus you get in, unless you want to visit new and unknown places, and see you all next week.
