The r/batfam analysis of the Batfamily's role and relationship in the wider vigilante community

The Batman was the first vigilante to gain public recognition since the JSA was disbanded several decades ago. Many scholars point to the Batman's appearance as one of the driving forces behind the surge of modern vigilantism.

While the Batman works with the Justice League as a founding member, Batman is notorious for not allowing metas within Gotham City. Exceptions seem to include Superman and Wonder Woman, who have been close allies with Batman since the founding of the Justice League.

Nightwing seems to be the de-facto leader and founder of the Teen Titans.

Accounts suggest Nightwing and the current Flash (the third Flash) are in a relationship.

While the Batfamily is incredibly secretive, Red Robin is even more so. If Red Robin is the third Robin, as many conjecture, then Red Robin is one of the founding members of the Young Justice team of teenage superheroes.

Robin and Superboy (the second) have been reported as responding to crimes together on multiple occasions.

Black Bat and Batgirl have been spotted working together with Black Canary and Huntress.

The Red Hood has had two main teams during the years he's operated. The first team was comprised of Starfire, a member of the Teen Titans, and Arsenal, a member of the "Arrowfamily" (see r/arrowfam for more details). His second team was composed of Bizarro, a Superman clone, and Artemis, an Amazonian (see r/amazons for more details).

Many have speculated for years over possible relationships for the Batman. While this subreddit does analyze and offer theories about the Batfamily, we encourage everyone to stay away from genuinely speculating about their identities. With that said, while the Batman is secretive, notable news outlets have offered many popular articles over the years about possible partners for the Batman, which is why we include them here. Popular theories include Wonder Woman, Catwoman, Superman, Poison Ivy, Pullitzer Prize Winner Clark Kent, Pullitzer Prize Winner Lois Lane, Green Arrow, Green Lantern, Two Face, Batwoman, Lex Luthor, Bruce Wayne, and many others. Hi! I'm visiting from Fawcett City. Is there anywhere I should absolutely visit?

(I go off of the comics and not the movies for Shazam(Captain Marvel). That is why I said Fawcett city and not Philadelphia for Shazam's(Captain Marvel) city. I like the way he is portrayed in the comics and in some TV shows like Young Justice more than the movies.)

honestly, my favorite places in gotham aren’t on the tourist guides. i’ve spent days wandering around just to see where i go, and i usually never go the same place twice. that said, here’s some of my favorites:

- the botanical gardens are beautiful!! just go when you know ivy’s in arkham, because this is usually the first place to get hit with pollen

- the wayne enterprises atrium is super cool. i like to come here to study and people watch

- the public library is super famous, so it can get crowded. but the aesthetic is just... so good, you know?

- come to gu campus!! we usually have community events every few weeks

- if you’re a true crime junkie, there’s a ton of walking tours throughout the city talking about our various villains. it’s not my style, but my roommate dylan loved it

people will tell you to go to the iceberg lounge. don’t go to the iceberg lounge.

Guys! Here’s my reasoning to why Bruce Wayne is Nightwing.

1. The personalities match!!! Bruce is this fun loving playboy and so is nightwing

2. Bruce is hella rich and could afford it

3. Nightwing is Hot~ and Bruce is too!

4. Both Bruce and Nightwing have black hair and I assume Nightwing had blue eyes too.

Clark Kent is Batman.

Y’all, I met Clark Kent a couple times while I was working for Luthor. He is the LEAST Batman person I have ever met. Also, @gothamitee​ has a good point. Plus, Batman both cares about Gotham and (I’m assuming that) he knows Gotham like the back of his hand. He has to be a Gothamite, born and raised. 

Also, as someone who works for Bruce Wayne, his butt does not match Nightwing’s.

Don't get me wrong, I have a huge soft spot for our city's vigilantees, but I'm just stating facts and observations here.

I could go more into it.

For instance, Bruce Wayne has broader shoulders than Nightwing, and a squarer jaw.

I’m just saying, if the man is rich I’m certain he wouldn’t just put on a costume that could make him easily recognisable if you just looked. The broader shoulders on Bruce could be a part of his plan!

But wouldn't he want to be comfortable in his civilian clothing? Those fights can be very dangerous. It would make sense if he were to bulk up, for lack of a better term, his armor and/or suit, thus making him broader. It doesn't make sense for him to slim down to fight.

Also, in an emergency, shoulder pads could hinder his movement if he were in his civies, when he needs to get suited up for a fight quickly. Then there's the whole process of taking off the pads and putting them back on, etc etc.

It just doesn't make sense any way you look at it. Sure, their personalities are similar, but I think that's where the similarities stop.

Though, Bruce Wayne may be helping fund the Batfam.

Granted I have no evidence for this, but it seems like something he would do.

welcome! i’m new here too, i just moved from opal to gotham for college. you might want to ask some more experienced gothamites, but here’s what i’ve learned so far:

the waynes are really that nice. i’m here on a wayne scholarship and mr. wayne wrote me a personalized letter when i got it. super sweet dude!

you’re much more likely to meet a vigilante in gotham than in other cities. i lived in opal for 18 years and only saw stargirl twice. because there’s more heroes in gotham, you’ll see them a lot more (and because of the crime rate, you’ll probably be saved more too).

don’t make jokes about joker. the other villains are fair game, but he’s off limits. (aka don’t be the guy in my chem lab who asked if we’d learn how to make joker gas).

don’t be one of those people who thirsts over the wayne kids, especially if you meet them in person. they’re celebrities, but they still deserve to be treated with respect. also half of them are minors, so double ick.

if you come across an unconcious hero, don’t unmask them. my ra told us that they have a button on their glove you can press to call for help instead.

another tip from my ra: don’t try to stand up to villains by yourself. let the heroes handle it.

there’s a 60% chance that a night at the iceberg lounge will end in someone getting arrested. stay safe and avoid it.

i think that’s all i have so far? any gothamites should feel free to drop other ideas in my ask box and i’ll post them!

I'm a creative writing major and let's just say I somehow scared my Gothamite professor of how good I am when I wrote my crime short novel that was 50,000 words. i think the worst part of being a crim psych/forensic psych major is that so many villains in gotham have their doctorates and as soon as i say i want to go to grad school people start getting scared. on the plus side, i pretty much have a guaranteed job at arkham or the gcpd!

But listen Gotham University gets a reputation. On one hand all of their science departments are cutting edge; but on the other, because of all the supervillains their graduates have very interesting resumes.

(A yes I did do my masters thesis under Dr. Crane, only because he was the only biochemist that was doing work related to the fear receptacles of the brain. Although my research was focused more on the inhibition fear and how it could potentially help with anxiety....but you know since I’m here in front of you that I’m very good under pressure and can reverse engineer various strains of fear gas in under an hour.)

Because of this Gotham science majors are grabbed by either Gotham companies or the government exclusively. You’re basically guaranteed a job if you survive until you graduate. (Even if you do go insane in the process the rogues are always hiring).

Most employers outside of Gotham avoid business majors due to the fact that they all interned at Wayne Interprises or Batman Inc and both of those are well known for their employee benefits. (Cutting costs by cutting paychecks, over staffing, and only hiring part time does not fly with these graduates... because “do you want supervillains because that is how you get supervillains” never mind that Gotham is an outlier in supervillain creation and should not have been counted)

Art majors are pretty much the only students who graduate unscathed. They are also weirdly calm for art majors and therefore highly sought after in their fields.

Weirdly for American colleges thier sports graduates are largely forgotten in the bustle until their season comes up. Gotham college teams are always always like a sucker punch to the gut. They’re very good but everyone always somehow forgets about their existence (only metropolis is immune to this strange affect due to the Gotham/metropolis rivalry) the teams rarely make it to the finals only because of hometown related bullshit (the entire team gets dosed with joker venom before a game/the city is Nomans land again and they can’t leave for the game/ivy took over the field again and now there’s endangered flowers covering it and they can’t practice or play.)

Nursing and Pre-Med majors don’t even have to worry about college costs, as they are always given the “Dr. Thomas Wayne scholarship”, even if they never applied for it. And they receive the BEST training in Gotham University (you gotta be able to treat patients with fear toxin in their systems, or were frozen by Mr.Freeze and have hyperthermia for days afterwards, were sprayed with Joker toxin and only have minutes before dying with a hideous grin, unfortunate goons who fought with a vigilante, and basically anything Poison Ivy related.)

However, due to Gotham being well Gotham, hospitals and clinics lose their staff at a alarming rate, causing potential medical students to change their majors out of fear of well, dying in a horrible supervillain related death. So Gotham University accepts anyone and everyone into their medical programs, despite the norm being that it is next to impossible to be accepted into nursing and med programs on the first try.

Also since many supervillains have doctorates, all the certification exams have a question that asks: “I will use my doctorate to heal and protect and not become a supervillain in the near future”. It’s a true or false question.
