Hm, not sure how to word this introduction....A long read ahead!

I'm a marine biology nerd and scholar in an on/off relationship with Splatoon since its first trailers. I distantly adore so many facets of the series but hesitate to join in as shooters, multi-player games, and I don't exactly mix well. With the drop of Splatoon 3 and Bunnycat's mind-meltingly adorable Tartar and Grizz animation to get me re-addicted in addition to other content creators keeping me well fed on lore, music, and fanart, I'm up to my neck in this colorful mess.

The previously mentioned genocidal telephone is my current problematic fav. I'm putting together cosplays based on the animation and other artist interpretations of Tartar and Mr. Grizz (refer to the “insp” tag) for my partner and I. With full knowledge that Splatoon is in fact a fictional kids game, my science-based brain can't help but try to dissect these cephalopod children and the world they live in. Immortal cats aren’t real and evolution can't take just 12000 years, even WITH mass amounts of radiation!

Why squids? Specialized species tend to die out after mass extinctions so why not a more generalized scavenger species? Are freshwater species extinct? If so why did shallow marine species survive and diversify? WHY DO FISH COME IN SUCH A VARIETY???

WHY IS THAT FISH JUST A FISH... 

…WHILE THAT FISH HAS LEGS??

Were or are there other ink/octoling-like species that evolved but were whipped out by them like Homo sapiens did to its sister taxa? Did some humans survive the initial flooding and attempt to survive on boats or rafts? Noah's Arc that shit only to die!

So with lots of lore-digging and scientific papers ahead of me, I'm opening the floor to questions YOU would like Commander Tartar, the deep-sea AI and local lunatic, to answer! With 12000 years of watching species die, adapt, and die off again and NO ONE to share it with, I hope to hear from you.

Entry 2: Oceans Specifically

Still not touching radioactivity and the consequences of 4 ADDITIONAL World Wars. So climate change with those melted poles, yeah? Way back when, even without Earth's polar caps being completely melted we saw a loss of biodiversity, displaced species, and other more ocean, less animal-based issues, such as changing currents and water chemistry. What does this mean for the development of the inkfish-ruled Earth? Mostly fewer overall species and more competition between species that had previously been spread throughout the globe. To be trendy and repeat everyone else, the fact that we see bleached coral in Side Order could be a clear reference to this loss of ocean life. Makes me wonder how other sessile animals like anemones survived. Are we saying that all sea critters than have anthropomorphized came from Altera? No? Distracted. I could also see an increase in species like crown of thorns or urchins, especially when coral reefs and kelp forests were initially extant. Are kelp forests still a thing? With fewer predators (i.e. otters), urchins probably bloomed which is why we even see some today. Speaking of blooms that harm biodiversity, let's briefly talk about cyanobacteria. Most detrimental mega-blooms are caused by an increase of nutrients found in the water, like from farmland runoff into local lakes, but climate change causes these blooms to occur earlier and last longer. The extinction of humans and their activities may have helped alleviate some of the explosions of cyanobacteria but climate change could've been doing double time due to how extreme the change is. This then causes toxins to be admitted and entire zones in bodies of water to be rendered unbreathable, leading to... guess what? Less biodiversity.
