Théoden had been king for almost forty years by the time of the War of the Ring, and he was growing old and weary. His chief advisor Gríma, who was covertly working with Saruman the White, continued to deceive him. Théoden might have been poisoned by Gríma. Théoden allowed Gríma to take an ever-stronger hold over him in the latter years leading up to the War of the Ring. Since his father's time, Orcs and Dunlendings had plagued Rohan; now, the battling Uruk-hai, who ruled from Isengard and were motivated by Saruman's desire, were causing him problems. Éomer, Théoden's nephew, succeeded after Théodred was gravely injured and slain by the Orcs of Saruman during the First Battle of the Fords of Isen. But Éomer lost Wormtongue's favor and was taken into custody. Théoden was initially against Gandalf's advise to oppose Saruman when he saw Gandalf the White, Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli. However, once he was freed from Gríma's influence, he ordered Háma to set his nephew free and fetch him his sword. Following Gandalf's guidance, Théoden moved forward to confront Saruman's army. But after encountering Ceorl on the route and learning of Isengard's might, he chose to ride to the Hornburg fortress instead, and a little while later, against overwhelming odds, he successfully defended the keep at the Battle of the Hornburg. After then, having cast off Saruman's yoke, he was known as Théoden Ednew, the Renewed.

After the coronation of Aragorn, Gimli said farewell to his old friend Éomer, who begged for pardon as to his words on Galadriel, though he added that he still didn’t think she was the fairest in the world. When he added that he considered Arwen the fairest instead, Gimli was content with this.

During the return journey he visited many places with Legolas, including Fangorn Forest and Aglarond. Eventually he returned to Erebor, to find it nearly devastated by war.

Dáin II Ironfoot had died, and Thorin III Stonehelm was now King. Eventually, though, he returned to the Glittering Caves with a contingent of dwarves, becoming the "Lord of the Glittering Caves". He rebuilt the gates of Minas Tirith with mithril and steel, and in both Gondor and Rohan accomplished great works. There he met his friends Merry and Pippin and the history of his people made its way to the Red Book; he also set out the genealogical tree of the Dwarves of Erebor for King Elessar.

In Aglarond, it is assumed, he lived on until he was old, and in Fo.A. 120 he sailed with Legolas his friend across Belegaer to Valinor, becoming the first and only Dwarf to do so.

At the time of the War of the Ring Prince Imrahil was the chief nobleman of Gondor. He was the son of Adrahil and brother of the Lady Finduilas (wife of Steward Denethor II). After his father's death in T.A. 3010, he became the twenty-second Prince of Dol Amroth. Imrahil was the father of Lothíriel, who married Éomer of Rohan.

As the battle was turning fully against the Free Folk, a large army of Giant Eagles of the Misty Mountains arrived, led by the Great Eagle. Bilbo was the first to spot their entrance on the scene and began shouting that "the Eagles are coming!", a shout that was then continued among the other troops of the Free Folk. At this point Bilbo was knocked in the head by a large stone thrown by a Goblin from above on the Mountain, and he was knocked out. With the support of the Giant Eagles, the Goblins that had scaled Erebor were driven off. The tide was eventually turned, when Beorn himself arrived at the battle, apparently having heard news that a large army of Goblins were on the move. This time he did not appear in his former shape of a giant Man, but in that of a gigantic Bear. Beorn drove through the Goblin lines, but paused to carry the wounded Thorin out of the battle with his paw. Beorn then returned to the battle with even greater wrath and scattered the bodyguard of Bolg, before ultimately crushing Bolg himself. The Goblins panicked and scattered, to be picked off by hunting forces from the victors later.

The Ithil-stone was the palantír that stood in Isildur's ancient fortress of Minas Ithil, placed there soon after the founding of the city.

The stone was captured by the Nazgûl during the Third Age when the city fell to them and became known as Minas Morgul. The stone was used by Sauron to entrap Saruman and deceive Denethor during the War of the Ring.

It is likely that the stone was destroyed in the fall of Barad-dûr.

Elrond was the half-elven son of Eärendil and Elwing, the father of Arwen, and the Lord of Rivendell who consistently fought against Sauron throughout the Second and Third Ages. He was the twin brother of Elros, who later became the first king of Númenor.

Having been born in Beleriand towards the end of the First Age, Elrond ever opposed Sauron and strove against him throughout the Second Age, helping to bring about Sauron's defeat in the War of the Last Alliance as Gil-galad's herald. Elrond inherited Gil-galad's Elven ring Vilya, and during the Third Age, he fought against the Witch-king of Angmar and, as a member of the White Council, expelled the Necromancer from Dol Guldur (who was Sauron in another guise). Towards the end of the Third Age, he was the foster father to Aragorn as he had been to Arathorn before him. Aragorn went on to marry Elrond's daughter Arwen. After the destruction of the One Ring, Elrond sailed west with Gandalf, Bilbo, Frodo, and Galadriel; their passing marked the end of the Third Age and the beginning of the Fourth.

ARATHORN II (T.A. 2873-2933, died aged 60) was the fifteenth Chieftain of the Dúnedain. He was the father of Aragorn II, King of the Reunited Kingdom.

In the last year of his father's reign as Chieftain in T.A. 2929, Arathorn sought Gilraen as his wife. She was only twenty-two, and her father, Dírhael, opposed the marriage. He warned that Arathorn would not live long, yet Ivorwen, Gilraen's mother, who was gifted with foresight perceived that hope would be born from their marriage for the people of the Dúnedain. Thus, Gilraen and Arathorn were married in 2929.

The next year, 2930, Arador, Arathorn's father, was slain by trolls, and Arathorn became Chieftain. A year later, Gilraen bore him a son whom they named Aragorn. Young Aragorn would never know his father; in 2933 Arathorn went hunting orcs with Elrond’s sons Elladan and Elrohir, but was shot through the eye and died. Gilraen took their son to Rivendell to be fostered by Elrond.

Sometime during the Second Age (after the year 1697) Sauron gave nine Rings of Power to nine mortal Men. It is said that three of the Nine were great lords of Númenorean race.

The bearers of the rings gained great wealth and prestige and became "𝘮𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘺 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘥𝘢𝘺, 𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴, 𝘴𝘰𝘳𝘤𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘳𝘴, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘳𝘪𝘰𝘳𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘰𝘭𝘥". The rings enabled them to turn invisible and see the Unseen. Their lives were prolonged so they seemed unending, but life became unendurable to them. Over time, depending on their native strength and their initial good or evil will, they succumbed to the powers of the rings and the domination of the One Ring. Their bodily forms faded until they became permanently invisible and turned into wraiths.

Known as the Nazgûl, they first appeared around S.A. 2251 and were soon established as Sauron's principal servants. However, the circumstances of this appearance are unknown, as are their actions during the Dark Years, during Sauron's capture to Númenor, and in the War of the Last Alliance. When Sauron was overthrown in S.A. 3441 at the hands of the Last Alliance, the wraiths faded into the shadows.

During the War of the Ring, Lobelia was imprisoned in Lockholes for arguing with the Chief's Men and attacking one of them with an umbrella. After finding Fredegar Bolger, Frodo finds Lobelia, old and frail. As Frodo lets her out, Lobelia is popular for the first time for bravely standing up to the Saruman's Men, receiving cheers and applause.

However, she was crushed to find out her son had been murdered whilst she was in prison. After the War of the Ring, Lobelia returns to her home village to live with the other Bracegirdles, giving Bag End to Frodo. When she died in the Spring of T.A. 3020, she gave her money to Frodo to be used to help hobbits left homeless by Saruman and her son, which deeply moved Frodo.

Rivendell, or Imladris, was an Elven outpost in the Misty Mountains on the eastern edge of Eriador. Due to its location, it was called the Last Homely House from the point of view of a traveler going to the Misty Mountains and Wilderland; and also the First Homely House from the point of view of someone coming from these lands to the civilized lands of Eriador to the west.

Elrond established it in the Second Agea, after the Fall of Eregion, as a refuge from Sauron. Rivendell had a strong alliance with the Kings of Arnor and after the fall of Arthedain, it became a refuge for the Rangers of the North and the Heir of Isildur.
