wait, frrequent ear infections in childhood are common in autistic people? I'm already diagnosed but never would have thought of that being related!
That’s the impression I’ve been given. I’ve never been given a particular reason for it and there doesn’t seem to be anything concrete to suggest that that is the case or to explain why, but most professionals I’ve been in contact with seem to acknowledge it as a common occurrence.
yes!! very common in fact! and not just in autistic kids either- it’s just as common in kids with spd. (slightly more common in autistic kids though.)
in the past, they used to contribute the many ear infections to vestibular problems- since both autistic kids and kids with sensory-processing disorder present with these. and there’s a lot of other issues that seem unrelated but aren’t- such as hesistancy on stairs, not wanting to sleep on their stomach or back, allergies, etc. i’m not sure where current research is at though.
if you’re interested, there’s a lot of good articles on it. (i usually use pmc (pubmed central) to find / read articles that are med-related.)
