Project Hail Mary is a fantastic example of how filmmakers can create a faithful adaptation and still take artistic liberties. The writers didn't try to copy the book to a tee, and added their own elements (the mental health room, the astrophage transition, the beach scene on erid, Grace's wardrobe etc). They understood that a film is a different artistic medium than a book and tried to write the story in a way that best suited that medium, all while staying loyal to the original story and themes.

On earth most animals aim to be symmetrical and so have an even amount of limbs. Reading that Rocky had five left me puzzled, obviously he's an alien, but was there precedent in nature for such a phenomenon? Fincher, determined to re-establish himself after a career setback with his directorial debut Alien 3 (1992), was mistakenly sent Walker's original script and, convinced of its merit, committed to directing the project if the original ending remained intact. Principal photography took place in Los Angeles between December 1994 and March 1995, on a $33–$34 million budget.
