riptide 131 spoilers you've been warned

okay can i talk about kira for a minute. i haven't watched 132 at all yet so this is just up to 131 (idk if shes in 132 or not, like i said i havent watched it, just prefacing)

she is a fuckign FASCINATING npc to me. i mean i've always been a sucker for the childhood friends to enemies trope (you wouldn't believe the chokehold catradora had on me in my formative years) but Oh My God.

i fucking love the way grizzly's using kira. its so fucking good to have her and jay be so entirely different.

jay escapes, she gets out of the ferin/raft environment, she finds some sort of freedom, she sees and realizes (and we see as she does!!) how awful and corrupt raft is. she tries (multiple times, throughout the recent times we've seen kira) to reason with her and talk to her

kira is actively contributing to the fascist government that is raft. even moreso now that she's a vice admiral. and i think she Does know that. she just is telling herself its for the betterment of mana, for peace, she's doing what's right. it's probably hard to believe that after the shitshow in 131, but she's so deep in that lie of 'i'm helping people'

her soft spot for jay is gone. its at least mostly gone. she's done with jays bullshit, and personally, i Love that she hasnt just dropped everything to join jay just because they were best friends once. ESPECIALLY since grizzly confirmed this is still Kira, she hasn't been like. cloned or brain wiped or anything. i fucking love that.

"but sharpshooter" they were never going to have their friends-to enemies-to friends/lovers moment guys. i'll honestly be surprised if kira is Alive at the end of this campaign lmao

DO NOT GET ME WRONG i fucking love sharpshooter. but mostly Pre canon them. they are so far past where they could ever be a real healthy Anything, even friends again. too much has happened, too many shots have been (literally and figuratively) fired.

with love. you have to fact check shit. yes you. you still have to fact check shit. a lot of people are great at fact checking stuff they don’t want to be true, but somehow are still absolute ass at fact checking stuff that’s rhetorically convenient to them. even people my age, who I KNOW grew up doing internet/bibliography literacy workshops, and being warned not to believe anything that isn’t reliably sourced, people who DO harp on fact checking conservative output or whatever, are still kneejerk sharing unsourced shit that is partially or wholly untrue or misleading, because it suits whatever narrative they’re pursuing in that moment, without even a “take this with a grain of salt”. fact check!!!!!! look at the sources!!!!! yes it’s a drag!!! do it!!!!!

i just read gideon the ninth for the first time (waiting to get htn from the library as well) and their relationship is gonna stick with me forever

we went from them literally physically fighting each other in like . the first or second chapter. to them begrudgingly working together to them being so incredibly in sync by the end. like. i unfortunately forgot to save any early book quotes but how did we get from

'"harrow, i hate you," said gideon. "i never stopped hating you. i will always hate you, and you will always hate me. don't forget that. it's not like i ever can."

halfway through the book (ish) to

kira... she's so interesting. i really like the contrast she provides to jay as well as RAFT. fundamentally, she's got a very flawed line of thinking with the whole "changing RAFT from the inside" schtick, but imo that's less of her wanting to actually change RAFT, and more of her feeling like saying that she's aware of RAFT's oppression excuses her complicity, which she consistently fails to grapple with. then, more recently, she's almost portraying it as a lesser evil, therefor it's fine for her to be a vice admiral and to further the injustices RAFT commits. she's everything jay could have been and just as unhappy for it. she's everything ava was supposed to be and its her complicity that's kept her alive.

not 2 be a huge star wars fan, but she REALLY reminds me of Thrawn at times (for anyone who's read the 6 canon books for him lol) because she wants to help people. objectively, her general intentions are good and she wants to help people and not like. end the world. but she has gotten so used to her position of power that she doesnt know any other way to do anything and doesn't want to put in the work and receive the social backlash that comes with defecting (not to mention the danger!) she's a very understandable (and realistic) antagonist. Riptide has a very cool thing with the npcs where a lot of them have very nuanced contradictions that make them so compelling.
