My Favorite Character Design Assignment

I want to talk about the process behind my favorite assignment we’ve done in my class so far! I love how the results turned out, and my teachers spoke highly of what I created!

So our assignment was to create an anthro duo for an action game to compete against other big games like Sonic and Ratchet and Clank. One had to be the hero, and the other had to be the sidekick. They didn’t have to be literal superheroes. Just teammates/best friends. Some examples we were given were for dynamics were Sonic and Tails, Ratcher and Clank, Banjo and Kazooi, and so on! In the end, we had to have good action poses, a background, a logo of the characters’ names, and a logo of a gaming studio we think would make the game our characters are in!

Before getting down into deciding what to do, I first drew my initial idea for the dynamic! Which was impulsive little guy and big guy who holds them back.

I thought the dynamic was funny, but I wanted to make sure to explore as well. I decided to set the relationship aside and focus on how these characters were going to look. Before getting into that, I did a few doodles just to get myself warmed up and figure out what kind of style I may want to aim for.

After that, I moved on to finding references that I could use for designing my characters, and just drew away from there, focusing more on just the animal and proportions rather than what the animals were wearing. I also tried out different styles and doodled some of them for fun! One artist I referenced quite a bit during my process was Cory Loftis, who worked on Zootopia. (Highly recommend checking out his work for drawing anthros with relative animal proportions.)

Then on the Wednesday it was due, I picked two of them, threw some accessories and clothes on them, and called it a day.

I had picked an apocalyptic setting. The bear was a silent hero while the gecko was a chatterbox. We were still in the “figure it out” stage, so we weren’t expected to have our characters all posed and stuff yet. The bear was a brute, and the gecko was a scavenger of sorts.

My teacher wasn’t the biggest fan about it, and to be honest, I wasn’t either. I don’t hate it, but it wasn’t what I wanted to do. There was a different design I wanted to use, but since I hadn’t created them using reference, I didn’t think I could use them since using reference was a huge part of the assignment. My teacher then told me to use the character I wanted and to pair her up with the gecko since both had strong designs on their own. I was delighted! So for the next week, I had to redesign my duo, have them posed, and have them colored.

I grabbed the gecko and the cat and threw them down. I redrew the gecko to have slightly different proportions and be in the style I drew the cat in. I pulled a bunch of reference from a lot of games for different clothing I could give them and see what kinds of settings I could put them in. I pulled from Splatoon, Super Lucky’s Tale, Sonic and the Black Knight, and more! Even though none of their weapons are being shown, I did use references of weapons from Sketchfab to get ideas as well as see how certain weapons would look at different angles. (Wonderful reference to use for anything really. You get a 3D model and can move it around to whatever position you want.)

During this stage, I also nailed down the type of dynamic I was going for. I wanted the cat to be super high energy and always jumping into battles head first! Meanwhile, the gecko would be more analytical and get borderline annoyed at her impulsive decisions. So it would kinda be like this:

“Hey! I see bad guys down there!”

“Before jumping in, we should analyze this. There seems to be some sort of rotation in their posts. We should pinpoint any weak points where it’s easy to sneak in. We should also watch for traps and- She’s gone. Of course she is. Why wouldn’t she be?” *grabs massive gun* “This happens every time.”

Then we had the final week! Instead of one teacher looking at our designs, we had two this time. (As well as the entire class, but that’s normal. Assignments are projected in front of your entire class while the teacher gives you critique and notes.) Both teachers liked my designs! They gave me a few notes, so I went through and did those. My teacher had no idea what Tate Entertainment was, so he made the class vote on a new studio to represent my characters. Boy was I delighted to see that everyone picked Sega! I was avoiding it originally because I’m already known as the Sonic kid in class. But anyways, I did the notes, despite disagreeing with some of them.

And here’s how the final came out! I really miss the green boots on Jax, which was something my teacher really didn’t like for whatever reason and told me to make them black. I personally liked the green a lot more. But one thing to always keep in mind is to please yourself first and the director second. Make things to how you like it and then change it however the director wants you to. But I’m still very happy with how it came out! One thing my teacher told me was that I’m very good at having appeal to my characters, which is about 90% of the battle when it comes to character design. You can imagine how giddy that made me!

I plan on doing personal animations with them at some point because I grew so attached to them. Just don’t know when I’ll get to them. But yeah! This has been my favorite assignment by far, and I just wanted to show off the process of a student learning character design!

Absolutely DELIGHTED to say that I will be showing off my work from school! Genuinely so thrilled because it was 100% yes! How I’m going to be doing these is separating them into the four classes that I currently have and just grouping them together like that. That being said, first up is…

2D Animation 1

Despite being called 2D animation, we haven’t started making anything move yet until this month. That means everything in here will be still.

First assignment was to learn the doughboy shape. We were given a bunch of model sheets and told to copy the drawings to the best of our abilities.

Next assignment was to tell a story in one pose. We were given a list of prompts and told to have at it!

We were then tasked to draw hands. A lot of hands. We were told to trace over them first and then draw them ourselves. There were a lot more hands I had to draw. This is like… maybe half of them. There were a lot.

3D Animation

So one of the assignments I forgot to send to myself so I’ll include it in the next post like this. That means no moving animations for this one.

Our first assignment was to pose Spider-Man, matching some references as close as possible. The last pose was my favorite because even the teacher hadn’t noticed that pose had been put in there.

Then we had to do some Buzz Lightyear poses in similar fashion.

Character Design

This class has been fun but also given me the worst case of imposter syndrome I haven’t experienced in years so that’s fun. I’m typically very pleased with the results over all! I once again forgot one of the assignments, so that’s missing.

The first character design assignment was to design cats! We could make them however we wanted! Anthro, normal, clothed, unclothed. I was getting frustrated and drew the kitten for fun to just get myself out of my head. She turned out so cute that not only did she dictate the style but also the fact that I made them all barn cats. (My teacher told me to put eyelashes on the far left one because she wasn’t feminine enough, and that was the day I got the most annoying critique I’ve ever received but it’s fine.) I love all of these cats very much and am slowly building lore for them.

This design assignment was actually really fun! (It almost killed me.) We had to design twelve head shapes for a king and queen. After that, the class would then vote for which head was the best! My class chose head 2 with the crown of 5 for my king and head 4 for my queen!

Story

Now this class has been my absolute favorite! I love storyboarding, so it’s great that I get a class dedicated to just that!

This first assignment we did was some silhouette blocking for sequential shots. We got to choose whatever movie we wanted and then block out the posing for three shots that included a camera cut. I chose my favorite scene from How To Train Your Dragon 2!

The most recent assignment we finished was a storyboard revisionist assignment for a Kung Fu Panda 3 board! We were given a storyboard with missing panels and we had to draw in the missing panels in the style of the storyboard artist. These are my favorites of the ones I did!

And that’s been my school stuff so far! It’s been quite fun, and I am so excited to show off the stuff that we’ve started working on this month! There will be moving animations next time! I’m so excited!

Tea or Coffee: Tea definitely. Caffeine just doesn't affect my body and I don't like bitter things. All coffee does is make me sad that I'm drinking coffee.

Mm I've been writing like. 2 words a week. My main piece is just Sakura and Sasuke slowly killing eachother (Romantically) I'm so horrible at focusing on things its- miserable I can't sit still long enough to do like anything. (Oh my dear Take 2 how I miss you...) Also writing this one-shot with me and my friends Oc's and. I love them. Kwethí ily Kwethí. Its based off the song Snowflake by the RiceDiety (or more specifically the album version) and its a really adorable song and im ruining it by sneaking in the foundations for evil yaoi.

Relearning my Kana because sm of what I love is Japanese media so I figured I may as well learn the language myself and not rely on others translations

Learning bits and pieces of sign language so I can talk to a girl in my class!!!

More art wips... I'm doing some stuff for every week of Halloween!! So for anyone that cares remotely about what I make watch out for that ^-^

I'm gonna start a series of fanart for Naruto ships that I don't like or are unpopular/overhated in the Naruto fandom :3 I've been really trying to spread more positivity in fandom spaces and I need to let go of my own biases to do that. Unfortunately I can't just like. Stop hating sns or Sasukarin. I gotta work for it ✊️✊️ So I think I'll be doing that in the coming months. Currently reading: Final Fantasy XV: Dawn of the Future. I’m not far into it since I literally just started reading through it, but I’m enjoying it so far! I always get excited reading a book that makes me need to look up a couple words. It’s also been a hot minute since I’ve sat down and read a novel rather than a graphic novel so it’s a nice change of pace.

Last song: Yakko’s Big Idea for the 2020 Animaniacs reboot! A fun musical number about space travel? Count me in! It’s just such a fun song, and I love singing it. Will be one of my top favorite songs until the day I day. Rob Paulsen is also just such a fun a singer.

Last movie: Prince of Egypt. Every Friday, we watch a movie at school as a way to absorb animation through observation. Such a beautiful movie with an amazing soundtrack! They execute the story so well, and the foreshadowing they did was insane! I miss 2D animation movies with that much love and detail put into it.

Last series: Fairy Tail. Have been binge watching it with @h1st0ryn3rd. It’s such an entertaining watch, and my obsession with Gray is normal, I swear! It’s also fun to watch Natsu run at people while screaming the whole time. The villains are also fun to make fun of.

Sweet/salty/savory: Sweet until the day I die. The others are fantastic as well, but sweet just rules over them all.

Tea or coffee: Uh, neither. I don’t like them. Can I just say apple juice or chocolate milk instead?

Currently working on: Goodness, what am I not working on? Not counting school stuff, I’m kinda still working on my Fighting For Tomorrow AU. I don’t have time to actively write anything but I think about it a lot so I count that as working on it. I’m also working on an art collab as well as working on prompts for Unbreakable Bond Week. I’m also working on some katas to get my green belt in my weapons class in the style of Bushiryu Okinawan Kobujitsu. But if we’re including school stuff, I’m working on a run cycle animation of Wakko Warner (genuinely so pleased with it so far), an expression animation of Aang from AtLA, a character design assignment for a hero and side kick that must be animal anthro characters and for an action platform game, and a storyboard for the first Toy Story movie!
