Hanahaki disease is a psychosomatic illness. It's a thing that your body does in response to stress over constantly repressing/concealing your feelings in settings with high background magic. It's like you've been ignoring pain for a long time and suddenly your vision starts going dark, because your affected body is just YANKING on random alerts trying to get you to PAY ATTENTION there is a PROBLEM. Yes the flowers do really exist. So do non-magical psychosomatic symptoms. The flowers aren't special.

This does of course open up the trope to options for non-romantic concealed feelings. Which I think is great. There is something viscerally satisfying about the person who seems so outwardly chipper coughing and hacking and spitting up Depression Flowers so now everyone has to know they're hurting. #as a US American: what the fuck do you /mean/ this is how other people in my country are taught to read???#apparently the fact that just about every school (or at least school district) teaches differently saved me from this #‘cause while there’re certain standards for what needs to be covered HOW it is taught varies wildly #but looking over the three cuing/whole language reading method I can definitely say that’s not how I was taught #I don’t remember the details of learning to read but it certainly wasn’t anything like that #context clues were more for once you read a word via phonics but were confused about what sort of word it was #sort of a double check for when the word you sounded out wasn’t familiar in case it was a word you knew but it has weird pronunciation #like ‘this is what phonics tells me but that isn’t a word wait this is the likely general meaning’#‘& I know a word that means that & this word on the page makes those sounds when you use less frequent pronunciation rules’#or else context clues were for working through comprehension once you knew all the words you’d read #in any case ‘read all the words’ was very much important & was actually something my family joked about bc it was so engrained #guessing whole words as a strategy to learn reading is fucking wild #I’m just thinking through how I read now in my mid-30s & like #I do sometimes guess or approximate words but that’s for speed skimming & names I don’t need to actually know in fantasy works #if I need to actually properly comprehend something (ie anything I’m gonna reply to) I do at least a second go over w/ reading each word #the idea of someone being /only/ given word guessing/approximation as a reading strategy is so….#here’s an advanced short cut technique for certain situations but you don’t get any of the base skills or theory to how it works #I am genuinely just reeling at this #suddenly the pissing on the poor reading comprehension out there makes a lot more sense #also why so many people reading posts about narcolepsy & narcoleptics think they are about necropheliacs….#also was utterly bewildered by that one but considering most of the US is taught to read like this it makes more sense…
