Atani Week: January 6-12, 2021
This is a week-long event celebrating the Atani, or better known as the Race Of Men. This is a week designed to help show case some of the lesser known men and give them a time to shine, though of course some fan favorites Iâm sure will be included (and should be!). This week is to prove without a doubt that the phrase second is best, without saying first is the worst.Â
Any content and creations are welcome as long! You can create edits, gifs, fanart, fanfic, fanmixes, and more! To participate, create your fanwork and post it in the #ataniweek or please just at the @ataniweek blog!
Below are some prompts for each day of the week. They are not mandatory.
DAY ONE: Men and Arda/Men and Eru/Men and the Dark Lords DAY TWO: Three Houses of the Edain. DAY THREE: Numenor. Â DAY FOUR: Numenorâs descendants (Gondor, Arnor, and Umbar) DAY FIVE: Northmen (Rohan, Dale, and Laketown) and Hobbits DAY SIX: Easterlings and Haradrim and Dunlendings DAY SEVEN: Free Day
This event is being run, solo by @hildorienâ. If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to message this blog or there. Also a rules list is here.
Thank you!

@ataniweek day seven | hobbits
It is plain indeed that in spite of later estrangement Hobbits are relatives of ours: far nearer to us than Elves, or even than Dwarves. Of old they spoke the languages of Men, after their own fashion, and liked and disliked much the same things as Men did. But what exactly our relationship is can no longer be discovered. The beginning of Hobbits lies far back in the Elder Days that are now lost and forgotten. Only the Elves still preserve any records of that vanished time, and their traditions are concerned almost entirely with their own history, in which Men appear seldom and Hobbits are not mentioned at all. Yet it is clear that Hobbits had, in fact, lived quietly in Middle-earth for many long years before other folk became even aware of them. And the world being after all full of strange creatures beyond count, these little people seemed of very little importance. But in the days of Bilbo, and of Frodo his heir, they suddenly became, by no wish of their own, both important and renowned, and troubled the counsels of the Wise and the Great.
@ataniweek day seven | freeform | the drĂședain
The Eldar called them DrĂședain, admitting them to the rank of Atani, for they were much loved while they lasted. Alas! they were not long-lived, and were ever few in number, their losses were heavy in their feud with the Orcs, who turned their hatred and delighted to capture them and torture them. When the victories of Morgoth destroyed all the realms and strongholds of Elves and Men in Beleriand, it is said that they had dwindled to a few families, mostly of women and children, some of whom came to the last refuges at the Mouth Sirion.
@ataniweek day seven | freeform | the forodwaith
For a while Arvedui hid in the tunnels of the old dwarf-mines near the far end of the Mountains, but he was driven at last by hunger to seek the help of the Lossoth, the Snowmen of Forochel. Some of these he found in camp by the seashore; but they did not help the king willingly, for he had nothing to offer them, save a few jewels which they did cat value; and they were afraid of the Witch-king, who (they said) could make frost or thaw at his will. But partly out of pity for the gaunt king and his men, and partly out of fear of their weapons, they gave them a little food and built for them snow-huts.

Lady Haleth
@ataniweek day six | haradrim
âTis said that there were dealings of old between Gondor and the kingdoms of the Harad in the Far South; though there was never friendship. In those days our bounds were away south beyond the mouths of Anduin, and Umbar, the nearest of their realms, acknowledged our sway. But that is long since. 'Tis many lives of Men since any passed to or fro between us.
@ataniweek day six | bree-landers and dunlendings
In Enedwaith the remnants of the Dunlendings lived in the east in the foothills of the Misty Mountains; and a fairly numerous but barbarous fisher-folk dwelt between the mouths of the Gwathló and the Angren (Isen). ⊠The native people were fairly numerous and warlike, but they were forest-dwellers, scattered communities without central leadership.
@ataniweek day six | easterlings
It is told that at this time the Swarthy Men came first into Beleriand. Some were already secretly under the dominion of Morgoth, and came at his call; but not all, for the rumour of Beleriand, of its lands and waters, of its wars and riches, went now far and wide, and the wandering feet of Men were ever set westward in those days. These Men were short and broad, long and strong in the arm; their skins were swart or sallow, and their hair was dark as were their eyes. Their houses were many, and some had greater liking for the Dwarves of the mountains than for the Elves. But Maedhros, knowing the weakness of the Noldor and the Edain, whereas the pits of Angband seemed to hold store inexhaustible and ever-renewed, made alliance with these new-come Men, and gave his friendship to the greatest of their chieftains, BĂłr and Ulfang. And Morgoth was well content; for this was as he had designed. The sons of BĂłr were Borlad, Borlach, and Borthand; and they followed Maedhros and Maglor, and cheated the hope of Morgoth, and were faithful. The sons of Ulfang the Black were Ulfast, and Ulwarth, and Uldor the accursed; and they followed Caranthir and swore allegiance to him, and proved faithless.

@ataniweek day five | northmen
These Northmen were descendants of the same race of Men as those who in the First Age passed into the West of Middle-earth and became the allies of the Eldar in their wars with Morgoth. They were therefore from afar off kinsmen of the DĂșnedain or NĂșmenĂłreans, and there was great friendship beÂtween them and the people of Gondor.

@ataniweek day four | nĂșmenorâs descendants | gondor and arnor
Isildur and AnĂĄrion were borne away southwards, and at the last they brought their ships up the Great River Anduin, that flows out of Rhovanion into the western sea in the Bay of Belfalas; and they established a realm in those lands that were after called Gondor, whereas the Northern Kingdom was named Arnor.
