Clip Studio Paint is Incorporating Stable Diffusion
***THE BUILD GOES LIVE DECEMBER 6TH***
Here's the bullet points you need to know about Clip Studio Paint joining deviantArt as today's 'villain for no good reason' de jour.
They are adding Stable Diffusion as a function of the program.
It is using the same stolen dataset we're all very familiar with.
This, in lieu of the millions of other features artists have actually been asking for.
This should be enough to make anyone angry. Really. The SD dataset is still a tirefire of stolen material. Nothing has changed that, and Celsys has made no steps to create their own AI database. Which is ironic, because they could've managed to bring in a lot of good will by seeking volunteers and buying up stock, but they did not.
As with dA, this is a case of 'do the thing, then apologize later, and hope people just kind of go along with it.'
What the new changes do not currently do:
Celsys is allegedly not scraping content from their users.
Celsys is allegedly not going to scrape content from their users without the users' express permission.
Celsys has not explained how they aim to do this, or what formal steps users must take to opt in or out.
I personally don't trust that it will stay like this. So:
What I'd recommend is freezing auto-updates on iPad (you have to do it through Settings -> App Store -> App Updates toggle) and just not updating CSP at all on any other platforms until this gets sorted out.
if i can add this to your post op: keep an eye out for that survey. if you feel a particular way about this, GIVE THEM YOUR FEEDBACK.
i know i sure as hell fucking will
Hello, if you're upset about Clip Studio paint using a program that is known to contain and use without permission art that is not within the public domain (https://waxy.org/2022/08/exploring-12-million-of-the-images-used-to-train-stable-diffusions-image-generator/) and to openly advertise based on being able to steal artists likenesses (https://analyticsindiamag.com/stable-diffusion-is-now-accused-of-stealing-artwork/) and the fact clip studio openly admits that this feature can enable copyright violations ("We cannot guarantee that images generated by the current model will not infringe on the rights of others.")
Guess what, you don't have to wait for the survey! There is a reasonable case to be made here that Clip Studio Paint adding a plugin that relays on stolen assets that it knows contains copyrighted material that they do not have permission to be using for commercial purposes is a form of fraud + a bad business practice, and guess what, if you live in the united states, that's something we have other avenues to address!
Protect your community by reporting fraud, scams, and bad business practices
You can file a report with the FTC reporting the company in question for attempting to install a tool that knowingly enables uses to violate the copyright of others. You'll want to provide a link to the announcement page (https://www.clipstudio.net/en/news/202211/29_01/) and ideally a link to one of the sources above. Let the FTC know that you believe this is a dangerous tool and that it violates the copyright of artists who have had their work stolen.
