Unpopular opinion: Dean is the real monster of Supernatural
strongly agree | agree | neutral | disagree | strongly disagree
dean is literally a villain protagonist, but the show refuses to acknowledge that
send me unpopular opinions
@thequeenofsastiel SAME!!! if the show actually called him out on his bullshit and if the fandom didn’t constantly bend over backwards to defend him, despite all the awful crap he kept pulling, he still wouldn’t be my absolute fave character ever, but I wouldn’t mind him that much either. instead, by constantly justifying his behaviour and glorifying him no matter what he does, they made me hate him
@blahdose EXACTLY WHAT I’VE BEEN SAYING
Can someone tell me what this is about? Who is Dean abusive towards?
Physical abuse: From the early seasons, Dean has been shown to lash out and punch Sam when he does or says something that Dean does not agree with or like. It happens in quite a few episodes. Sam just takes it and doesn’t retaliate (with the exception of when he beat Dean up in the hotel room when Dean confronted him over Ruby). That is abuse. He tries to do the same thing to Castiel in Season 4 but is unable to hurt him. Dean beat Castiel up so badly that he developed freaking anxiety attacks over it and then drove the point home about how he could have killed him with his own angel blade. Does the Mark of Cain excuse that away? To me, no.
Dean has berated and belittled Sam, Castiel, and Jack (a child) so consistently and so badly to the point that all three characters were suicidal thanks to his treatment of and behavior towards them. The biggest time this can be seen with Sam is in Season 8, the season where Dean spent all the episodes treating Sam like shit and like the worst person on Earth to the point where by the end Sam was ready to kill himself via the angel trials. Did Dean have reasons for being upset with Sam? Sure. Do they justify his actions? No. Dean makes them feel stupid. Dean makes them feel like they are not good people. Dean makes them feel like they are screw-ups who can’t do anything right. And he has said this to Sam and to Castiel. This is abuse.
Dean is a large contributor to why Castiel’s mental health and sense of self-worth fell lower and lower as the seasons went on. He has straight up told him that “nobody cares that you’re broken.” As long as Castiel is useful, he better suck it up and push on. The season where Castiel was leading the angels and Dean constantly was scoffing, expressing disbelief, and making snide comments over the fact that there were people who believed in Castiel, looked up to him as a leader and were willing to follow him? As if that were somehow unbelievable or that it was impossible that Cas could? Abuse.
Dean drove Jack (a child) to self-harm.
Jack (a child) was literally terrified of Dean. And with good reason, since Dean actively tried or threatened to kill him on more than one occasion. This is extremely abusive. The why literally does not matter.
Dean was literally going to kill Jack, Castiel’s son, right in front of Castiel. Who is supposed to be his ‘best friend’.
Dean is controlling. His word is final. Sam and Castiel have to ask for his permission or approval to do things despite one being a fully grown adult and the other being a freaking ancient angel. If they don’t, they are reprimanded and punished by him. Be it by him belittling them or icing them out. They are afraid of his disapproval and losing his favor. They are afraid of how he will react.
And finally, those times where Dean is having a conversation with someone,(usually Sam or Cas), they disagree, and he gets pissed off and punches something or starts throwing shit? Yeah, that’s abusive to. You can literally look up what emotional abuse is and go down the list of examples and tick off so many things that Dean has done to Sam, Jack, and Castiel. It goes beyond him being an asshole.

This. The constant excusing or explaining away of the awful shit that Dean has done CONSISTENTLY AND REPEATEDLY, this is a pattern of behavior for him, and the refusal to hold him accountable for those actions and actually allow him some mfing growth just made me resent the fuck out of Dean.
MAKE ME CHOOSE SUPERNATURAL EDITION: @shadowsweavers and anon asked me ANGELS or DEMONS
Well, now that ‘recent events’ have likely made the Destiel shippers and the fandom environment even more unbearable, I suppose I am officially done. It’s just frustrating and sad at the same time b/c I love Castiel but I know for a fact that it will be impossible to find content that is actually about CASTIEL and not about how *uwu gay baby angel gay for dean, died for dean uwu*
I just really, genuinely cannot stand that this character has been forever reduced to nothing more than one half of a ship (that I hate with a burning passion) and will forever be referred to in relation to Dean Winchester (who I strongly dislike at least half of the time) along with all of his character growth and everything he ever did or accomplished during the course of his story arc.
The only good thing about where things ended for this character is that he actually was able to rebuild Heaven like he wanted and is there with Jack, though of course all that happened off screen because apparently the writers don’t actually give a fuck about non-Winchester characters at all.
Castiel ‘I don’t sweat under any circumstances’
I don’t know if I already reblogged this but honestly I don’t care
This is still one of the best video edits I’ve ever seen.
Same, Mick. Same.
Fck 'em up, Castiel.
The other person may deny that certain events occurred or that certain things were said. Confront the abuser about an incident of name calling, the abuser may insist, “I never said that,” “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” etc. You know differently. The other person may deny your perceptions, memory and very sanity. Minimizing is a less extreme form of denial. When minimizing, the abuser may not deny that a particular event occurred, but they question the recipient’s emotional experience or reaction to an event. Statements such as “You’re too sensitive,” “You’re exaggerating,” or “You’re blowing this out of proportion” all suggest that the recipient’s emotions and perceptions are faulty and not be trusted. Denying can be particularly damaging. In addition to lowering self-esteem and creating conflict, the invalidation of reality, feelings, and experiences can eventually lead you to question and mistrust your own perceptions and emotional experience. Denying and other forms of emotional abuse can cause you to lose confidence in your most valuable survival tool: your own mind.
You know, I think Dean would bother me a lot less if the narrative and the characters acknowledged his faults. But everyone bends over backwards to sing his praises, more and more so as the series has progressed. Castiel's speech to him in 15x18 was especially egregious. Don't get me wrong, I understand being blind to the faults of the person you're in love with(trust me, I do 🤦♀️), but given their relationship in s15, it's shocking that Castiel is still so incapable of seeing Dean clearly.
Dean is far from the most caring man on earth. And he's almost never selfless. And while it may be true that he does at least some things for love, it's usually been a selfish love. He raised Sam because his dad told him to, and he wanted his father's approval. And it's clear from Sully's existence in Sam's life that he did the bare minimum most of the time. He paid so little attention that Sam was able and willing to run away. He brought Sam back from the dead because he didn't want to be alone. He saves the world because he wants to continue to exist in it. He hunts because he enjoys killing. The way Castiel said Dean saw himself? Driven by hate and anger? Assuming he's capable of that level of self awareness, he sees himself that way because that's exactly who he is. He's abusive, he's cruel, and he's deeply self centered.
Don't get me wrong, not everything Dean has ever done is evil, but he's fundamentally not a good person, and it's so frustrating that the only characters who ever point that out are villains. I've been able to enjoy watching characters who aren't good people before, and, while I don't think I'd ever be able to enjoy watching Dean(honestly, his presence in Supernatural makes it nigh unwatchable, and I'm only continuing because I love Sam and Jack so much), but I think I'd hate it at least a bit less if how awful he is was acknowledged by the narrative and the other characters who aren't villains.
This right here. All of this.
castiel is such a better character when he’s a asshole... those season four episodes where he would just disappear mid conversation? let everyone know that he’s an angel of the lord and could smite them with a look? peak cas.

#castiel: [a million year old soldier and strategist] oh phooey you’ve beaten me at connect four! #what a good dad
awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
It gets cuter when you realize he literally set up that win for Jack. Like a booster seat of victory.
OMG he does let Jack win!
First gif - Castiel lays his red counter to line up with Jack being able to line 4 up. If Castiel placed his counter in the first row, he would have prevented Jack from winning. What is more, If Castiel had placed his counter in the first row, Jack would naturally try to block him from gaining too many counters and with Jack’s counter, Castiel could have won in one move…
However, second gif, Castiel puts his counter near to where Jack’s counters are, giving him the step up Jack needed for 4 in a row.
You can see, there have been times Castiel has almost let Jack win before, but blocked him at last moment, allowing Jack to feel like this is a really hard game, that Castiel is playing right and not allowing him to win, however Castiel never intended to win at all as we see <3
Cas really IS a master strategist

Supernatural 8x23: Sacrifice
Strange. Strange how a leaky pipe can undo the work of angels, when we ourselves are supposed to be the agents of fate.
“The moon is a loyal companion. It never leaves. It’s always there, watching, steadfast, knowing us in our light and dark moments, changing forever just as we do. Every day it’s a different version of itself. Sometimes weak and wan, sometimes strong and full of light…”
