It would have been so cool if, instead of suggesting that the 2D fragments are dark matter, they would have been proposed as the solution to the missing baryon problem.

This problem is about the discrepancy between the amount of baryonic ("regular" matter) observed nowadays, as compared to the detections from soon after the Big Bang. According to those measurements from the early universe, there should be more baryons than seen at recent times. Some 30% was missing!

I saw "was", because these days it's pretty much solved, but at the time that the books were published, it was not. So having that matter become invisible because it has collapsed into 2D fragments would have been a beautiful solution 😌

3 Body Problem: Episode 1, Season 1

I'm admittedly quite bad at keeping up with watching shows, but I feel like publicly posting will keep me motivated to watch more haha. Tried to keep an open mind throughout (sometimes I had to remind myself about that) but I overall enjoyed it and I'm looking forward for more! I also need to watch Season 1 before Season 2 since The Dark Forest is my favorite entry in the trilogy.

Stream of consciousness go:

Ye Wenjie is a character who I find to be the most captivating in the first novel and I feel like the producers captured some of her original characterization with the circumstances surrounding her (which would then in turn serve as a good basis for the pivotal point of replying to the Trisolarans) thus far. However, there was a writing decision I found a bit questionable which was her relationship with the journalist character? Unsure how to feel about that, but I suppose it might be a contrast with the overall shift to the characters being generally closer as exemplified by the friend group in the present. (Trying to evaluate this in terms of what message the producers wanted to convey rather than augh! they changed the trilogy!! haha)

On that note, Auggie's quite interesting and I found her a grounded character in how she reacts to her circumstances (haunted by the countdown). For example, she seems to be dissociating (common response to stress) from her surroundings in the meeting with everyone as indicated by her delayed response to Jack. This fleshes her out compared to Wang Miao in the original trilogy I'd say! Also on Jauggie...I see the vision already. Excuse me, but you cannot simply have I Kissed a Girl in the background while they're discussing haha.

I feel like I have an overall sense of the characters already which is good for the first episode! Saul's conversation with Vera is one example of this where Vera seems so utterly haunted. Not to mention, Saul quoting physicists accentuates his own struggles and belief that he "missed [his] window."

However, the shorter amount of episodes than Tencent does mean that some of the subtlety in the original is lost and it'll be much more fast-paced. I found that everything was overall more direct. The cosmic microwave background in the original trilogy compared to the stars blinking (which, admittedly the execution was cool) epitomizes the loss of subtlety in this adaptation. Though, I won't fault this adaptation too much given episode count. (At the very least, it's trying to get all the main points down)

Despite that, the ending was a good hook to lead into what could happen next!

if you're interested in astronomy/cosmology but aren't really math savvy i really recommend this review on the history of the dark matter problem. it's really accessible for the most part, and you will be able to understand why physicists will say with a straight face that only about 5% of the universe is detectable
