I have a job interview Thursday (I’m looking around) and they want me to teach a 45 minute Intro to Diversity of Life lesson to a sixth grade class…

Fun facts: - probably 14 kids - all of them have iPads - school encourages project-based learning - they just finished a unit on Cells and Heredity

Any ideas for lessons on “What is a living thing?” (Other than the fire thing… Don’t want to set off a fire alarm during the interview)

When I taught this unit, I had the kids start with a brainstormed list on what made something living and we discussed that list afterwards. From there, I showed them a video from PBS that showed all these different living things and based on their lists they had to determine whether it was living or not. Discussion followed and they had to justify their choices.

Now if you want to bring the PBL aspect into it. You could start them on the challenge of determining whether a section of forest has living creatures in it or not. And whether that area should or should not be paved over for a new development. Which can lead into what living organisms are in there and what makes them living.

I’m typing this over dinner so it’s a bit incoherent and rough but I hope that helps.

I like a thought experiment: Suppose you are in a team that is going to explore Mars (or some other planet). It’s your job to look for signs of life/living things. What do you look for? Write up a proposal for what your team will do. Share/critique each other’s proposals.

I do something like iamlittlei’s suggestion with my 7th graders. Then I share with them a make up story about a boy who, year after couple of years, loses different body parts/functions and basically slowly turns into a robot. We then have a discussion about when he stopped being alive. This leads into characteristics of living things (ie. more evidence.)

When I used to teach this, I would send students on a photo scavenger hunt. They had to come back with 10 pictures of various living things (can't be 10 pictures of 10 different people) and 10 photos of non living things. Then we would put up all the photos (using airplay) and make a list of characteristics of living / nonliving things. Its worth a thought... at least it has a techy aspect to it!

My little brother - He’s 9, in the 4th grade and working on a really neat science\geography project for school.

Part of the information he needs is peoples’ heights and the state/region they’re from. He’s already asked our entire family, a few neighbors, favorite teachers, and a lot of friends.. but his graphs don’t have a lot of diversity since we all live in p much the same area.
