Vivien Leigh had been cast to play the female lead in Elephant Walk in the early 1950s. She was even flown to Ceylon to appear in location shoots that would be included in the film. However, in March 1953, Vivien suffered a mental breakdown which prevented her from completing the film. Too expensive to scrap, the producers replaced her with Elizabeth Taylor, as they found her to have similar coloring and proportions and coloring to Vivien. To save money, they even kept exterior shots featuring Vivien, as seen above.
