Who is aurvandill? What are they like? I've never heard of them, until now 👽❓️

Aurvandill, which in germanic languages is also called Ēarendel, Erentil and so on, is the ancient all-germanic god of stars and travel. He may have been associated with the North Star, Sirius or Rigel. Aurvandill is his name in old norse.

according to reconstructions, he may have originally been a human who attained divinity and became a star in the sky, or he may have been the original god of starry skies and travel.

he was also the inspiration for Tolkien, who used his image to create Eärendil The Mariner, “The Brightest Star of All”. ✨

VAR

Var is one of Frigg’s loyal handmaidens and a goddess of oaths and agreements in Norse mythology. She attentively listens when people make promises, ensuring their words are honored. If anyone dares to break an oath, Var enacts justice, punishing those who betray their vows. Though not as widely known as other deities, Var embodies the Norse belief in honor and the binding power of one’s word.

Freyja

Freyja, the Norse goddess of love, beauty, war, and magic, is one the most captivating figures of Norse mythology. The daughter of Njord, the god of the sea, and sister to Freyr, the god of fertility and peace, she is also the foremost mistress of Seidr, the ancient art of prophecy and magic, which she herself taught to the Aesir gods.

In her great hall, Sessrúmnir, Freyja dwells as a figure of passion and fierce independence. She traverses the skies in a chariot drawn by cats and wears the necklace Brísingamen, a treasure created by dwarven craftsmen, which she gained in exchange for a night with each of them. When Loki once stole this prized jewel, Freyja turned to Heimdall who restored it to her.

Yet her heart is not only fierce but tender, as shown in the tale of Óttar, one of her lovers. To aid him in his quest to discover his ancestry, she transformed him into her loyal boar, Hildisvíni, and guided him on his journey.

Another story tells of a giant builder who sought her hand in marriage as payment for constructing the walls of Asgard. The gods, unwilling to part with her, turned to Loki for help, as they often do. Perceiving that the builder’s progress relied upon his stallion, Loki lured the beast away, thereby ensuring the giant’s failure and the gods’ triumph.

Sjöfn is associated with love and affection. She is mentioned briefly in Snorri Sturluson’s Prose Edda as one of Frigg’s handmaidens, responsible for turning people’s minds towards love and romantic desire. However, her historical authenticity is debated among scholars, as she appears only in a handful of kennings and lacks a strong presence in mythological narratives. Some suggest she may have been a poetic personification of love rather than an independently worshiped deity. Despite this, Sjöfn remains an intriguing figure, embodying the softer, emotional aspects of Norse belief.

Eir

Eir, the Norse goddess of healing, is a mysterious and powerful figure in mythology. Known for her compassion and wisdom, she is often listed among the handmaidens of Frigg, Odin’s wife, and Menglod, a benevolent giantess from Jotunheim. Some traditions also name her as a Valkyrie, suggesting that she not only chose who lived and died in battle but also provided invaluable healing to wounded warriors.

Eir was revered as a protector of those in need, particularly in childbirth, where her divine intervention was sought for safe deliveries. Some scholars believe she was also one of the spirits of the home, watching over those who prayed to her. She is associated with Lyfjaberg, the “hill of healing,” where seekers would go in search of her aid. Many compare her to Hygieia, the Greek goddess of health, as both symbolize divine care and the preservation of life.

Sol, the Norse goddess of the Sun, was the radiant daughter of Mundilfari and sister to Mani, the god of the Moon. Their father, proud of their unmatched beauty, boasted too much about it, angering the gods. As punishment, Sol was forced to drive the Sun’s chariot across the sky, pulled by the swift horses Árvakr and Alsviðr. She was never allowed to rest, for she was relentlessly pursued by the wolf Skoll, one of Fenrir’s children.

Each day, Sol raced to outrun her doom, knowing that if she faltered, darkness would consume the world. Her fate will be sealed at Ragnarök, the end of all things. When the final battle unfolds, Skoll will finally catch her, devouring her in a grim fulfillment of prophecy. Yet, her light will not be extinguished forever : her daughter, even more radiant than she, will rise to take her place, ensuring that the Sun will shine once more upon the new world.

Baldr! God of Light, God of Love. I invoke You this day! Nanna! Goddess of Love, Goddess of Loyalty. I invoke You this day!

Baldr, Shining God, Benevolent God. God whose love knows no bounds, whose love is never ending. Whose love is warm, whose love is a comfort when the world’s darkness threatens tear us asunder.

Nanna, Beautiful Goddess, Wise Goddess. Goddess whose loyalty is admirable. You who followed Your beloved husband into the Underworld and stayed at His side in the cold.

Baldr, Shining God, Benevolent God. God whose light shines greater and brighter than any star in the sky, whose light pierces the darkness of hate and anger, leads us to be kind to ourselves and our fellow human.

Nanna, Beautiful Goddess, Wise Goddess. Goddess whose love is unconditional and comforting like a mother’s. Your love is like an embrace from a mother, a sister, someone who can take away the hurt that this world inflicts upon us.

Baldr, Nanna please accept this offering and in return let us know the light of Your love and kindness in the coming season. Help us to spread the love and light and joy You both bring to the humans on Midgard. Hail the Shining Baldr and Hail the Loyal Nanna!
