And all of this at once.
Writing is really about a sudden inspiration comes at random moment, and you have to write it down immediately; Otherwise it's forever forgettable.

When a character is suspicious:
»-♡→ Eyed »-♡→ Sized up »-♡→ Studied »-♡→ Observed »-♡→ Watched »-♡→ Measured »-♡→ Scrutinized »-♡→ Kept an eye on »-♡→ Regarded carefully »-♡→ Looked over
...or if they're watching from a distance:
➺ Observed ➺ Monitored ➺ Followed with their eyes ➺ Kept watch over ➺ Tracked ➺ Shadowed with their gaze ➺ Looked on ➺ Witnessed from afar ➺ Viewed ➺ Surveyed
...or if they're confused:
➵ Squinted at ➵ Peered at ➵ Blink-and-missed ➵ Looked twice at ➵ Examined ➵ Stared at ➵ Tried to make out ➵ Struggled to see ➵ Looked uncertainly at ➵ Focused on
...or if they're remembering or realizing:
̗̀➛ Recognized ̗̀➛ Discovered ̗̀➛ Realized ̗̀➛ Found ̗̀➛ Noticed at last ̗̀➛ Became aware of ̗̀➛ Caught themselves seeing ̗̀➛ Finally spotted ̗̀➛ Identified ̗̀➛ Perceived
...or if they're in awe:
⬩➤ Beheld ⬩➤ Witnessed ⬩➤ Gazed upon ⬩➤ Took in ⬩➤ Marveled at ⬩➤ Stood transfixed by ⬩➤ Basked in the sight of ⬩➤ Soaked in the view of ⬩➤ Absorbed the sight of ⬩➤ Looked on in wonder
...or if they're being observant:
➯ Perceived ➯ Discerned ➯ Detected ➯ Made out ➯ Registered ➯ Noted ➯ Distinguished ➯ Observed closely ➯ Identified ➯ Recognized

Unhinged writing tip of the week
Start now. What are you dreading it for? The sooner you start, the sooner you can edit, the sooner you edit, the sooner you publish. So get on it. Start.
Cool Ways to Show a Character Is Traumatized (Without Saying "Traumatized"):
• They memorize where every exit is in a room
• They check their phone repeatedly after sending a message, worried they said the wrong thing
• They freeze when asked a simple question, like they’re calculating the safest answer • They over-explain tiny mistakes before anyone reacts • They clean up messes that aren’t theirs without being asked • They listen for footsteps in hallways before relaxing • They downplay their own pain with humor or sarcasm
• They check locks more than once before bed • They leave shoes near the door, ready to leave quickly
• They wake up instantly at small sounds while others sleep through them
• They carry painkillers, snacks, or water everywhere “just in case.”
• They don’t like closed doors.
• They test people subtly to see if they'll leave
• They sit near walls or corners, rarely the center of a room.
• Loud noises don’t scare them anymore, they just go very still
• They apologize automatically, even when nothing went wrong
• Compliments make them visibly uncomfortable.
• They keep important things within arm’s reach at all times
• They watch people’s hands more than their faces
• They flinch at movements that aren’t threatening
• When someone raises their voice, they go quiet instead of arguing back • They assume blame first, even when it makes no sense • They’re surprised when someone keeps their promise • They brace themselves before asking a favor

Can we talk about something fantasy writers don't admit enough?
Sometimes the hardest part isn't building the world.
It's deciding what not to tell the reader yet.
Because you know every detail matters…
But if you give them too much too soon, the story loses its heartbeat.
How do you decide when to let the world speak…
and when to let your characters do it instead?
my toxic writing trait is imagining the scene in my head in long, full cinematic detail and then writing: “they fought. it was intense.”
Fighting and clawing against the feeling that I should be writing faster and that it shouldn’t take me like 3 years to write one novel
who am I racing against????? GOD????
to be clear, I believe younger artists and minors can write good fics (not to say “fanfic must always be good” either because it is a hobby and I still believe that as long as it’s done with love and the artist’s joy, it is good) and I believe it’s good when younger artists and minors start making art at young ages.
that said, a lot of fanfics out there that you read and love are done by adults with kids, jobs and responsibilities. adults who have years, decades of practice under their belts. adults who don’t let life and responsibilities take away their joy in creating.
someone’s love and passion don’t suddenly go away the second they reach a certain age. so if anything, I feel sorry for people who say “adults shouldn’t write fanfics or make fan art” because what these people really say is that they expect themselves to stop having fun and finding comfort in things that bring them joy and comfort the second they reach a certain age. it’s sad that they put an expiration date on their own fun and source of comfort.
