Can we talk about something fantasy writers don't admit enough?

Sometimes the hardest part isn't building the world.

It's deciding what not to tell the reader yet.

Because you know every detail matters…

But if you give them too much too soon, the story loses its heartbeat.

How do you decide when to let the world speak…

and when to let your characters do it instead?

YA writers…

Do you ever finish a conversation between your characters…

…and immediately wonder if anyone their age would actually say those words?

I feel like writing YA is a constant balancing act.

You want the characters to sound their age without sounding forced.

You want the emotions to hit hard without feeling overdramatic.

You want the story to move fast without skipping the moments that matter.

So what's the part you wrestle with the most?

I think every writer has that one thought before sending a draft to a beta reader.

"I really hope they tell me if…"

…the story starts dragging.

…a character feels off.

…the pacing loses them.

…the ending doesn't land.

So finish the sentence for me.

"I really hope they tell me if…"

I feel like mystery stories have one of the hardest jobs.

You have to trick the reader…

without making them feel cheated.

That's such a fine line.

What's the part you struggle with the most?

Leaving clues?

Building suspense?

Or pulling off a reveal that makes readers think,

Oh… it was right in front of me the whole time.

What's the one part of your draft you keep telling yourself you'll fix later?

The chapter that still feels off.

The conversation that isn't quite landing.

The pacing.

That one character who refuses to cooperate.

Or maybe it's a scene you keep opening… reading… and immediately closing again.

No judgment here.

What's the part you've been avoiding?

Has a character ever done something in your draft that made you stop and think,"…would they actually do this?"

I swear that's one of the hardest parts of writing fanfic.

You want to let the story grow, surprise people, maybe even change canon a little…

But you still want readers to look at your characters and go,

"Yeah. That's them."

What's the hardest part for you?

Keeping everyone in character? Pacing a long fic? Or making your canon changes feel completely believable?

One of my favorite parts of beta reading is realizing a chapter isn't actually bad.

It's just not doing what the writer wanted it to do yet.

Sometimes the scene is good.

The emotion just isn't landing.

Or the pacing is a little off.

Or the character isn't coming across the way they exist in the writer's head.

That's my favorite kind of puzzle to figure out.

I have a theory Every writer has one scene they'd hand over to a beta reader with a tiny bit of panic.

Not because it's bad.

Because it's the scene that matters the most.

The confession. The betrayal. The first kiss. The chapter that could make or break the whole story.

So… what's the one scene in your draft you'd be scared to show a beta reader first?

And why that one?

I love asking romance writers this because the answers are never the same.

What's the one scene in your draft that nobody is allowed to touch?

The one you'd defend with your life if someone suggested cutting it.

Maybe it's the banter that finally clicks. Maybe it's the first kiss. Maybe it's the quiet moment where they realize they're in love.

What's that scene for you?

what was the first scene where your characters stopped feeling like enemies and started feeling like a problem

it is not the kiss. not the confession. I mean the first crack in the tension.

the moment one of them cared a little too much noticed something they shouldn’t have got jealous protected the other without thinking or had that “oh no” moment and immediately tried to bury it
