How I feel when you point out a typo in one of my books:

-Sad

-Stupid

-Like a failure

-Embarrassed

-Like a bad writer

-Horrified

-Sick to my stomach

-Like no matter how hard I work, I will never EVER be successful

I know it makes you feel clever. But, your “cleverness” makes me want to never write again. When the first thing I see when I wake up is: “lol here’s a typo in your already published work” I literally want to die. I want to wink out of existence forever. THIS is the reason I haven’t written anything in a while. Do you have any idea how much bravery it takes to release your work into the world? How afraid I am EVERY SINGLE DAY? When you, as a personal friend, point and laugh at my blood sweat and tears, it confirms my worst fears about myself 100%. It tells me I will NEVER write well. I will NEVER be successful. I will NEVER be good enough. I’m on my own completely. I simply don’t have the financial resources to hire editors. I just can’t. So, I have to edit myself. I have to slave over my stories for hours, days, months, years trying to fix every possible typo. It sucks. But that’s what it takes. Until I can afford an editor, this is my only option. To see someone laughing at it hurts. So, with a tearstained keyboard and a heart full of self doubt, I beg you... If your friend doesn’t ask you to look for mistakes, resist the temptation to laugh at them. Resist the temptation to make yourself feel smart by pointing out what they missed. There’s a chance that action could determine if they stay a writer, or shift to “used to be” a writer.
