As I was journaling this morning with the Find Your Happy Daily Mantras Book by @shannonkaiserwrites, I came across a phrase that really resonated with me. ・・・ “Your childhood is your source of inspiration because it represents you at your purest form.” ・・・ 🤯 ・・・ This is so easy to forget. When we’re young—before societal conditioning, before responsibilities, before labeling and judgment—we’re just . . . us. An expression of love. Of peace. Of beauty. Of Source. ・・・ What we do in our day-to-day is an expression of that. So if the two aren’t aligned, of course we’re going to feel like something’s missing. That’s probably why I quit working a job I hated. Why I throw myself random dance parties in the middle of the afternoon. Why I swing in my hammock for hours reading. Why, against all odds of “being successful”, I self-published my books. Why I strive to create impactful content that will shake people awake. ・・・ Because that’s what I did as a child, in my purest form. I devoured books. I wrote stories. I “directed” and “produced” shows. I danced. I played in nature. I spoke my mind without fear of judgment or shame. I did what I WANTED to do because it didn’t matter what anyone else thought about it. Come to think of it . . . as a kid, I was resilient AF. ・・・ I still am. You still are. Why have we forgotten this? ・・・ What did you do in your purest form? How did you express yourself? What could you do for hours on end? What brought you JOY? ・・・ Let’s get back to that. I am of the belief that we can heal the world just by being ourselves —our TRUE selves. When we act on this, we create space for others to do the same. I get asked all the time what my writing “must-haves” are ✍🏼 ・・・ Besides the obvious (laptop, notebook, and an obscene amount of highlighters 🖍), I always wear my writing gloves from @storiarts 🧤 Perhaps it’s because I like to pretend it’s cold outside (when it’s definitely not, it’s summer in Texas 😅) or because I always associate my coziest (and most productive) writing days with the fall and winter seasons (NaNoWriMo anyone?). Not exactly thunderstorm attire, but hey, it’s summer ☀️ ・・・ I took it a bit easier earlier this week, trying to get back into the swing of things after my vacation. I used to be so focused on the “time”—what time it was, how long it took me to complete a task or check off the next box on my to-do list, what I “should” be doing at noon (eating lunch) and again at 6PM (eating dinner) . . . but then I realized: what IS time? On the west coast, it’s two hours earlier. On the east coast, one. And on the other side of the world, it’s the next day 🤦🏻‍♀️ ・・・ Time is only a hindrance if we see it that way. So I’m choosing to change the way I see it. ・・・ So what if I woke up at 11 today? So what if I ate lunch after “lunchtime”? So what if I work into the evening because I took some time for myself this morning? I’m still here. I’m still doing the work. I still showed up. And THAT will always outweigh the numbers on the clock. I don’t think we need “more hours in the day”. In elementary school, I used to get called out for daydreaming 💭 Not scolded, just a “Hey Kristen, eyes on the board” (Are chalkboards still a thing? 🤣) ・・・ Anywho . . . I’ve always had an active mind, an active imagination. I used to talk 100 miles a minute because I always had so much I wanted to say, so many ideas to share and put out there. I suppose not much has changed 😉 ・・・ But, as I grew older, I also grew quieter. I stopped sharing as much. I focused on my schoolwork, participated in extracurriculars (mostly sports), and kept my head down. And for what? To build a life that was deemed “acceptable” and “successful” in society’s eyes, but strayed SO far from what I‘d always wanted. ・・・ To use my voice to impact others. ・・・ To exchange ideas with likeminded people. ・・・ To be creative. ・・・ To have the freedom each and every day to do the things that light me up. ・・・ My point is this: Do not dim your light to make others feel comfortable. Do not let someone tell you that you’re too loud, too opinionated, too blunt, too “out there”, too whatever. You’re YOU. It’s okay if they don’t understand you. It’s not your job to make them. It never was and it never will be. ・・・ Your job is to be YOU. Unapologetically. Authentically. Wholeheartedly. That’s it. ・・・ So you know what? I’m gonna zone out. Daydream. Speak my mind. Speak it again. Write the books of my heart. Create content that matters. Make mistakes, more than once, because I’m human. Fall in love with my flaws because they help me grow; fall in love with my strengths because they help me achieve. Know that taking time for myself is not selfish. Wear my heart on my sleeve. Love fiercely and tenderly. Look for the good in others, even when I’ve been wronged, because there is always light. I will always, ALWAYS look for the light. And you know what? Friday is my favorite day of the week, but not for the same reason as most. So many of us “live” for the weekend—we push through the long hours at an unfulfilling job, ecstatic when Friday FINALLY arrives. Then the weekend comes . . . and the dreading of Monday begins again.
