It took a moment for Tenko to process what Peppina said.

"...I beg your pardon?" Tenko asked. "I'm just wondering if I misheard you, because towers don't just spawn overnight!" With how incredible that Ultimate Talents could get, perhaps Tenko was being overly skeptical. But even Ultimate Talents were largely grounded, so there was a difference between that and a giant tower appearing out of the blue.

"You know what? Yeah, that doesn't really make sense." Peppina admitted.

"I just came to work one day, and suddenly it was there. Peppino had a reaction that was sort of Santa Maria, not again! when he saw it. I think it's an old rival of his or something."

Peppina's impersonation of her boss was impressively accurate.

Naturally, upon hearing of Peppina's difficult condition, Tenko's mood immediately flipped to deep concern.

"That's absolutely terrible! Is there anything else I can do for you, then? Are you okay right now?"

"You could buy some pizzas."

"I'm fine. The boss is cool, I get free meals and a place to sleep. It's just that someone built a giant pizza tower just across from us, and have been stealing a lot of customers. The pizza isn't even that good, just goes to show how much brand value can have."

"It's why I'm here, handing out coupons we can barely afford, to try and draw in some customers."

"Yeah. Peppino's Pizza is kind of on hard times at the moment, so I've missed a few paychecks, but it's all work experience in the end, right?"

She did look a little bit happier hearing Tenko would show up with some friends. It was starting to get hard to keep the lights on.

"I miss having customers..."

Peppina opens up the cash register. Moths fly out of it.

"Right... this is why my job here is technically volunteer work. Apparently, the vouchers didn't get us any more customers than usual..."

"Oh! So it's like a voucher but for a price lowering instead of just getting the thing in place of money. Well if you are offering, I'll take you up on it. Thank you stranger." She took the offered coupons happily.

"Yeah... we can't really afford to just give away free pizzas." Technically, they would struggle to give out discounted pizzas as well, but with the Pizza Tower next door, had to do whatever it took to keep customers.

Apparently, the cardboard pizza next door was still succeeding thanks the ludicrous advertising budget, so she had to do extra stuff like this to keep the business afloat.

"Uh, umm..." Peppina ruffles through her pocket, and pulls out a few colourful pieces of paper.

"These! If you bring these to Peppino's Pizza, you get a discount on a purchase of any pizza of your choice. You'll take some, right?"

"Ten percent off coupons for pizza? Anyone?"

Peppina is standing on the street, handing out vouchers. Take one?

((I keep thinking of books I saw on store shelves in my teen years, and wishing that I had bought them when I had the chance because they just aren’t around anymore))

((A book series called Vampirates? The rest of the Captain Cat and Umbrella Kid series? I would love to know what those are, but now I can’t))
