Book 1: Air â˘Â  Chapter 1: Welcome to Republic City
Honestly what freaked me out the most in this scene wasnât monk gyatsoâs skeleton - we pretty much expected that. What freaked me out was all the firebender skeletons.Â
Monk gyatso was always portrayed as a light-hearted, peaceful man, both from roku and aangâs perspective (the most aggressive thing we see him do is drop pie on the other elders). Aangâs teachings of ârespecting all lifeâ almost undoubtedly came from gyatso, which is why itâs so hard to picture him killing all these people, even during a crisis.Â
The other thing that I wonder about is why were the only bodies found around him? Sokka found a helmet, but thatâs not the same as a skeleton - it could have easily been lost in the confusion of the attack. So it begs the question: was gyatso the only airbender to fight back? Was he the only one who broke the airbender code of non violence? Did he die thinking heâd rather go down fighting then be executed like the others? I need to know what happened during the genocide
See now for me, this always made perfect sense. That temple was full of children, and I have no doubt that nearly every able adult in that temple would do absolutely anything to protect those children.Â
In the comics, we see Aang kill General Old Iron to protect Toph, so itâs obvious that airbenders will and can kill if pushed to it to defend others that they care about. So I think that it makes sense that the Monks and Nuns at the temples would have broken from their own beliefs in defense of the children they undoubtedly loved.Â
As Avatar Yangchen said:Â âSelfless duty calls you to sacrifice your own spiritual needs and do whatever it takes to protect the world.â And I think that philosophy would be stretched to protecting children.
What surprises me most in this scene is the sheer number of bodies around him. It really illustrates how powerful airbending masters can be. All of those soldiers were (presumably) firebenders with their powers all hopped up on Sozinâs Comet, and an elderly, pacifistic monk managed to kill them all.Â
just going to mention that if Gyatso was willing to sacrifice himself so maybe a few (or maybe even a lot of the temple) airbenders could escape or something*âŚ
well. fire needs air to live. and so do people.
so if Gyatso went into meditation (like he seems to be posed here, though maybe some surviving airbenders came back and posed him? then why not âburyâ* him properlyâŚhmmm) and say, sucked ALL the air or oxygen out of the room (which might have been enclosed at the time?)
well. thatâd be a pretty easy way to kill a lot of people. which is why I was always glad that airbenders were mostly pacifistic (perhaps even forced to be pacifists?). maybe itâs my health science background, but I was always the most terrified of the ânormalâ power of airbending (as compared to bloodbending or lightningbending). I think I legit almost yelled at the screen when Appa took off for real (as opposed to the belly-flop), like âDONâT GO SO HIGH UP YOUâRE GOING TO SUFFOCATE YOUR NON-AIRBENDING FRIENDS WHO CANâT ALTER THE CONCENTRATION OF GAS AROUND THEM AND/OR WERE NOT RAISED IN A MOUNTAIN TEMPLE.â
*the bodies could have either been eaten by animals or degraded if they were outside. how long does it take for bones to degrade if theyâre uncovered? it depends on the environment and weather and nearby animals and the bone health and a buncha other things, right? so itâs possible that they died outside and were decomposed by the time the gAang got there, especially if there were predators or scavengers around. like say komodo rhinos who didnât die.
**I say âburyâ because thanks to Embers fic (https://www.fanfiction.net/s/5398503/1/Embers) Iâd be more inclined to believe that airbenders do a sky burial (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sky_burial).Â
^^Yes, I was thinking something similar! What if Gyatso performed the technique of sucking the oxygen out of ones lungs as a last resort!? I mean, how else could all of the soldiers been taken out? Definitely there had to have been a struggle, even if it was for a short amount of time. During that struggle, itâs evident that Gyatso wouldâve been targeted and ultimately couldâve been killed by a variety of tactics but what could he have done to kill all of them? Air blasts of doom can only do so much. Doesnât seem like the roof caved in on themâŚif anything it seems like the roof collapsed due to itâs age. Itâs possible that other airbenders couldâve tried to come to his rescue but it was too late to save him, although they were able to take out the soldiers? Personally, I feel as though Gyatso was alone in this fight. They had him closed in and at that moment he knew he was going to die but he also didnât want any of those soldiers to ever have a chance to get to/harm Aang. So that brings up the question, maybe he committed an act/technique that would not only harm his enemies but take him out of his misery as wellâŚ? Wow, so many different possibilities.
