I miss when ads were a single click and then they’re gone. Now every ad has a minimum of three phases where you watch a video, exit the still frame of fake gameplay, and then exit the app download. That doesn’t even touch on the ones that forcibly take you to another app after opening a tab in safari without you ever touching the screen.

I hate advertising. I hate that you can’t do anything without companies jumping down your throat with mostly bullshit ads. I hate that billboards exist. I hate that every company unanimously decided to make their ads longer and longer. I hate that ad blockers try to charge you money and there are in app purchases to remove ads. I hate that my attention has become commodified. I hate that there’s nothing I can do about it.

You know, an interesting tumblr transformation that's happened gradually, and which I've seen no one talk about: ask-culture has essentially dropped off to nothing.

By which I mean, asks used to be WAY more of the tumblr economy. They used to be more common to send, and receive, and see. They were integral to the collaborative, forum-like behavior of old tumblr communities, not even to speak on the HUGE number of ask-blogs that used to exist to only be interacted with in ask-form.

I'm not saying this in a vying-for-attention way but instead in an observational way: I used to get way way more asks in like 2015, even with a fraction of my follower count. I wonder if it's due to the homogenization of social media sites? There's a lot more of this divide between "content creator" and "consumer" instead of just a bunch of peer blogs who would talk to each other. "Asks" aren't really a thing on twitter, are they? And as I understand it, the closest thing to an "ask" on instagram or tiktok would be a creator screenshotting some comment and responding to it in a new reel or video or whatever those content mediums are. Are asks just too tumblr-specific? Is that aspect of the site culture dying out as more and more people converge to using all their social media sites in the same way?

it's probably from assholes making asks a minefield of trolling/harassment for years with no real blocking ability, which turned people off from allowing asks on their blogs so as a whole the site moved away from it

but now that we do have better blocking, we should try to revive it.

Are any of you a fan of Children of Time? I need to know someone else understands how Avrana Kern is one of the most epic characters of all time while still being wrong about pretty much everything. I need to know someone else understands how you can look up from the end of each book in that series thinking, I just became a better person by reading this book.

So I'm working on a book. And here's the first sample of it.

Seize

It’s always been twofold—drowning in fear and the smell of lightning.

Kalta will have no idea what allowed a demon to curse her with this. She will have no idea whether it was something she did—because clearly newborns are the worst sinners of all—or if it’s punishment for something her family did. Or maybe it’s for what she will do, sometime in her life.

What she knows is this: right now, she feels afraid. It’s a terror that comes from nowhere, stabbing her in the gut, cold like a knife on this warm sunlit day, filling her body as ice replaces her blood. And she screams. It’s the smell of a storm, and the rising of lightning before her eyes. And it hurts, oh how it hurts—

—thoughts be / come jag / ged and sharp li / ke need / les in her h / ead—

And then she wakes up, and remembers how to breathe, and Mama is holding her to the ground.

“What happened?” she asks, groggy and afraid because she is five and it hurts (but not as afraid as before, not like the terror too like the lightning)—

“You’re alright now, my little bird,” murmurs her mother, with a face that fills the world.

Babar’s fists are clenched, and he’s staying back. Keeping Zethar back.

“You’re alright.”

Zethar’s face is horrified.

“You’re alright.”

Mama sounds like she’s praying.

“You’re alright.”

Kalta isn’t.
