why are so many things 20-30 dollars. more things should cost $4
Validation.
there's a post in the nope tag going around saying that nope isn't criticizing spectacle, only spectacle where living things are being exploited, and girl....that is spectacle. that's the history of spectacle. the objects of spectacle never get to choose. from the colosseums where slaves got mauled by lions to tiktoks made of strangers, that's spectacle. being in awe of someone else being in danger, doing something they shouldn't be. it's not about 'choosing' not to be exploitational in our design of spectacle, it's about realizing that the things humans are addicted to watching will always be exploitational. it's about remembering that voyeurism is not neutral. we have to learn that viewing is an act of consumption, and that we need to exercise much more often the power to just not fucking look
I HAVE FORMULATED AN ORIGINAL NOPE (2022) THOUGHT. em says training jean jacket was her birthright- and the film ends with her being the one to tame jean jacket (the viewer) by taking a picture of it and fulfilling her birthright. the film makes it clear that surveillance, observing and recording = taming and ownership. gordy is seen as tame because he is a recorded tv character. lucky doing the commercial is seen as tame because he’s being recorded and observed. and in the instances of gordy and lucky, it backfired on the observer, but not for em, because she knows to respect the animal and show deference to it, even while breaking it. because she’s a haywood, because it’s her family’s legacy, because it’s her birthright
If you watch Nope with the mindset that Jean Jacket is just a giant camera, it makes Jupe’s motivation even more fucked up. He was trying to make the camera happy. He was doing everything in his power to make sure the camera liked him.
NOPE spoilers ok i know there’s a ton of comparisons people make with Jean Jacket’s final form, what with people comparing it to sea creatures, old movie cameras, Evangelion angels, but the first thing I thought of when I was it was just a tent, like an old timey circus tent, a universal image of Putting On A Show, but also one that historically has its own problems with both abusive use of animals and racism. All the anger and negativity of abuse and having your abuse be made into something to watch, given a physical, vengeful form.
a coin from jean jacket killing oj sr in the opening and em using a coin-operated machine to take the final picture … parallels are paralleling
thinking about jean jacket. wondering if there’s ever been another jean jacket before this one. i guess if there has been, it was at a time before cameras, or at least mass media. what happened then? did anyone ‘break’ that jean jacket? or did they eat everyone in the vicinity and move onto another planet? like “you don’t have to go home, but you can’t stay here”? did they cause mysteries like roanoke? much to think about
MEGAN THEE STALLION — “Her” M/V, dir. by Collin Tilley (2022)
Scrolling through the Nope tags and everyone is so correct and so right but. I am finding a strange lack of mentions of the swallowing scene. The vore. The massacre. Whenever I will think back to this movie, it will always be looking at the shadows behind Jupe of the audience members flying. It will always be the look on Jupe's face before it cuts to black, and then back to the open orifice of Jean Jacket and seeing the bodies flying in. It will always be the slimy, fleshy pocket they find themselves in, and their screaming.
The cosmic horror. The way they are helpless in their suffering. The way they are still alive for the few hours before they are consumed above OJ and Ems house. The strange things they see inside. Their haunting screams. Wow. Wow.
I love horror, and this was the first time that I had an actual visceral reaction that wasn't from a jump scare. I remember reaching out to my friend next to me and the empty chair, cause I was truly truly horrified. I cannot stop thinking about that moment. That scene. Amazing fucking movie
The most terrifying Jean Jacket scene (in my opinion, at least) is right after she ate the tmz guy and then passes directly behind OJ and she’s right fucking there, she’s so fucking close, and OJ is breathing heavy and switching between closing his eyes and looking at the ground like his life fucking depends on it (which it does) and he can feel the breath of this huge predator on his back, and he can’t even look to see if she’s gone away because looking at her at all means certain death. I wasn’t scared of any other Jean Jacket scene, not even the digestion scene, but that moment had me fucking holding my breath.
