yesterday i had a nice southern teenager call me "ma'am" and then look at me and go, in a well-meaning tone, "uhhhh, if you go by ma'am. sorry if not." and i had to be like yeah man ma'am is fine. appreciate you being inclusive though. i could almost see the little warning pop up in his UI-- hold up! people with blue hair often have pronouns. are you sure you want to address this individual with a gendered term?

I haven't finished the series yet, but i think it's fun, how the players' relationships switch up between episodes.

Jei & Frisk were best friends in their first life. and in the medieval episode, it's Frisk's death which causes Jei to rebel.

And in the second medieval world, they're total strangers. their one interaction is emphasizing that they're not friends. Jei dies and Frisk survives, but why would they care? Simply back to the status quo.

In the ice world they were siblings, relentlessly arguing over which of them would get to sacrifice themself for the other. Frisk dies getting Jei off the planet, so that he'll have a chance to live.

In the desert they're enemies, they try to kill each other. Frisk is the reason Jei leaves the planet, but it's not out of any sort of affection. They want him gone so they'll get to protect what they truly care about.

I don't know if it's time travel shenanigans or parallel worlds or something else. Are there different versions of the same character? Will ice world Jei meet desert planet Frisk? Or will all versions of a character collage into one - friendstrangerenemiesibling?

I'm looking forwards do it.

I just wanna say since I keep getting dragged back into minecraft content yall need to go watch ApolloTv. His content is so high quality and when I first found him like half a year ago it was literally like finding a diamond in the rough.

It's basically role-playing with a bunch of lore and the cast of characters are mostly the same and they're put in scenarios and the videos are linked together (THERES A WHOLE CINEMATIC UNIVERSE NOW!!) but you don't even need to watch anything in order and its so well made I've been obsessed with it.

Uhhh timeline summaries for them

So key notes about both - they were university students before the Fall, and were two of the five Chosen by the Goddess of Light(tm) to become immortal and survive the end of the world as they knew it. They were dating at the time! Then the world ended, they were separated, and for a couple hundred years weren't even aware they'd lived (neither fully believing they had truly become immortal).

Then they managed to develop their mini restarted societies enough to pass a message to each other, and reconnected over a distance! Things went on and off for a couple hundred years, as they managed societies in their own ways, ultimately they had a fight and had broken up. In Year 988, Trello's city/caldera was exploded by a mysterious weapon, and they were assumed dead, which obviously meant they couldn't resolve things.

Then in year 1000 after the Fall, as the Shrouded rose up and started harming more people in their group's own pursuit of immortality, they ended up revealing themself (and their people) as alive the whole time, and helped save the world along with the other Magisters and Osgood. After this event, and with the arrival of Visitors and magic allowing or travel between calderas across the Ocean to be easily available, they are reconnecting and taking things slow. They've both lived over a thousand years now, and committing your love to someone immortal, even if immortal yourself, is daunting and complicated. (By 1015, they're dating again properly. I'm a sucker.)

Ok I have got to talk about the Chinese Room joke in episode 7 for those who didn't get it because it is so good.

The Chinese Room experiment is a thought experiment that says if you put a guy in a room with a Chinese-English dictionary and instructions, but he doesn't understand Chinese. He can follow the instructions to produce a result, but he doesn't actually understand what he's saying. This is a fundamental argument against GenAI/LLMs - they don't actually understand what they're saying, they're just following an algorithm that statistically predicts the next word in a sentence, with no understanding of what the words actually mean.

Also Caine says "it's a mystery what's behind that door" which I interpreted to be a jab at the black box way that GenAI consumes and regurgitates things in its algorithm. Not even its creators know what it knows or how it will respond to things.

This is such a thinnly veiled jab at the fundamental dangers of misunderstanding GenAI being explained through our beloved fake AI. One minute in and I'm already loving this episode
