To everyone in the comments- No, the beetles aren’t killed for their wings. These jewel beetles have short adult lives (2-3 weeks) and the wing casings are harvested after their death to ensure their conservation.

The Victorians did not invent beetlewing art. This species of beetle is indigenous to South and South East Asia where beetle wing art actually originated. Thailand, India, Myanmar, China, and Japan all practiced beetlewing art before the Victorians. Most notably, they have been used for centuries in clothing and art in the Thai royal court. Queen Sirikit has promoted beetlewing art in an effort to revive Thailand’s art and cultural history. Queen Sirikit has also forbidden the harvesting of the wing casings prior to the beetle’s death to protect them.

Unfortunately, it is hard to find old Thai art online but here are a couple of examples.

that one shot of aang in the final fight where he’s waterbending a spout that grabs ozai’s leg and pulls him back down always makes me think aang is about to pull a “hehe got ur nose!!” which isn’t even that far-fetched considering aang would probably think that trick is the height of comedy anyway. also I think an ending where instead of taking ozai’s bending away, he took ozai’s nose away, gogol style, and ozai was just so ashamed of his embarrassing, noseless face that he hid himself away from society out of shame, would be the only hypothetical end to that battle that I actually think would be an improvement over the original text. especially if it turned out that ozai’s nose was actually really wise and benevolent, and he [the nose] became the next firelord. meanwhile ozai (now noseless) is just like “noooo that’s my nose!!! that should be me!!!!!! that should be me............ 😢”
