I've been looking at these my entire internet life, basically, for every solar eclipse! They called him Mr. Eclipse. He just passed away recently 🥺"

Anyway apparently Mr. Eclipse made 5000 years' worth of solar eclipse graphics, which you can find the simpler versions of here

this is actually a really good, concrete example of how just knowing stuff about history, and reading old books, can directly materially improve your quality of life. and its an experience ive had a lot because im privileged to have really intellectually curious, self-educated parents who would TELL me this stuff as a kid, and created the expectation that i would find things out for myself. im not lecturing anyone like "you need to read old boring books r your life sucks" thats not what im saying. im saying knowing concrete facts about things people think dont matter can change your life in big and small ways for the better. instead of being baffled and alienated about this subject, i have cultural context for it, i understand how it has worked in the past and can work in the present moment for me. i feel less ashamed and isolated!

i was even talking TO my dad about this a few weeks ago. and he was talking about how his wife, my stepmother, a lovely woman, was going through it a bit with some medical stuff ad she was frustrated dealing with all the recovery shit. and he said something like, "this is just a normal part of life fo everyone eventually, we used to have people we called 'invalids' in the last three centuries, people who we just took care of and weren't expected to do anything except survive and if they were lucky maybe recover. and it's not a big deal". and he's right!

but we have sort of erased this class you can inhabit from modern life, now you're just a temporarily-embarrassed Laborer, and everyone is mad at you until you recover your "wellness".

Harry Potter fans have forced a new multimillion-pound power cable between the UK and Ireland to be relocated after complaining it would desecrate the “grave” of Dobby, a fictional elf.

The character was laid to rest on Freshwater West beach in Pembrokeshire, Wales, in the film Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Fans of the wizard series come to leave stones reading “Here Lies Dobby” despite being asked not to by the land owner, the National Trust, because the beach is an ecologically sensitive site.

The £430m Greenlink interconnector, which links the National Grid to Ireland, was initially going to pass through the site of the “grave”, the project manager Simon Ludlam told the Energy Revolution podcast. Fans became aware of the plans after Ludlam pointed out where the 125-mile (200km) cable to County Wexford would go underground at Freshwater West during a BBC interview. “We did the shot, we finished, I went back to London, and they then aired it a couple of weeks later. And we got hundreds of calls, I mean, hundreds of calls.” Ludlam said he did not know who Dobby was, and became confused by the calls the company received, saying a colleague told him: “Apparently we’re going to go straight through Dobby’s grave”. “I said: ‘Dobby, who’s Dobby? I don’t know Dobby?’ I said: ‘He’s a fictitious character in a fictitious book, the whole thing is fictitious, what are you talking about?’” He said the colleague told him: “No it’s very, very serious.” The firm then enlisted planners to find a new route that avoided the supposed grave. “A lot of people were very happy about that, and the project is now going [ahead] and Dobby’s happy.” In the end, he said, “we went quite close to some real Bronze Age remains, but we avoided Dobby’s grave”. The Bronze Age remains include urns associated with human burial.
