Les hortillonnages
The hortillonnages have been growing for about 2000 years. Today, due to urban sprawl, there are only 300 of the original 10,000 hectares. A thousand people lived in the horticultural cultivation of the hortillonages. Today there is no more than a dozen hortillons (name given to the gardeners) that exploit 25 hectares. Most of these floating gardens have been transformed by individuals into ornamental gardens and even secondary residences.
