An AU where:
Adrien is born with a stammering speech disorder. It’s especially bad when he’s sad, scared, or embarrassed. He is very shy and insecure about it.
Gabriel had planned to use his Miraculous to retrieve the Ladybug and Chat Noir Miraculouses to create a better world for his son. A plan he, unfortunately, never gets to execute.
Gabriel dies in a car “accident” one night. When he was found, his body was in critical condition, and though no one noticed, his Miraculous was missing.
Who took it? Who knows? Gabriel had many enemies, some of whom knew about the Kwamis and their powers.
Gabriel’s death takes its toll on the family. Adrien, Emilie, and Nathalie were devastated. The tears flowed for weeks
In his will, Gabriel leaves everything to Emilie and Adrien, who would inherit the company and fortune once he was of age. Until then, the company is to be run by Emile, his beloved wife, and Nathalie, who Gabriel trusted with his life.
It took a while, but Nathalie, Emilie, and Gorilla all managed to help Adrien cope with his father’s death. However, this did not mean that he’s not still hurt by it. It was just another painful part of Adrien’s life, and it only happened a year prior to when he was sent to Collège Françoise Dupont.
Adrien’s parents had attempted once before to put Adrien in public school when he was ten. He was bullied often, both verbally and physically. It got to a point where they had to pull him out.
Adrien still models for his father’s company to honor his memory, but is very quiet, and will not do interviews. His mother supports this, and usually covers for him.
Much to Adrien’s embarrassment, Emilie is guilty of still carrying and cradling Adrien, despite his being 14. She can’t help but still feel very protective of him, especially on some of the rougher days Adrien has.
In Gabriel’s absence, Emilie has grown much closer Nathalie, who she has known longer than anyone. Nathalie has been a constant source of comfort for Emilie since Gabriel’s passing, and over time, their bond has gotten stronger, to a point where they are rarely seen apart.
Adrien, knowing Nathalie all his life, considers her to be like a second mother to him.
Eventually, a reluctant plan is made to send Adrien to Collège Françoise Dupont at the age of 14.
Adrien is so scared of people either laughing at him or getting short with him because of his stammering, that he rarely talks, and begs his mom, Nathalie, and childhood friend, Chloe, not to tell anyone. They reluctantly agree at first.
The first day is a disaster. He never speaks to anyone, rumors spread that he is either mute, or too stuck up and self important, and he’s even given a wedgie, and shoved in a locker. Adrien goes home in tears, begging his mom not to make him go back, but Emilie convinces him to try again.
While many believe the rumors they’ve heard about Adrien, others, like Marinette Dupain-Cheng, think he’s just shy.
Marinette, being very concerned, and not wanting him to go without friends, confronts him after school, and asks him to clarify.
Marinette, being very concerned, and not wanting him to go without friends, confronts him after school, and asks him to clarify.
At first, all she gets is uncomfortable nods or headshakes from him. She doesn’t want to make him feel uncomfortable anymore, so she offers to talk to him the next day.
Desperate, and not wanting to lose this possible friend, Adrien finally lets out a very loud and shaky “M-M-M-M-MARINETTE! WAIT!!!” She immediately turns around. This is the first time she’s ever heard his voice.
Adrien then begins a shaky, stuttering, and tearful explanation of his problem. He goes on about how every time he ever tried talking to new people, they always laughed or got angry with him, even speech therapists, and how his mom is the only one who never lost patience with him.
Marinette hugs him, and offers to help him any way she can, starting by explaining it to her classmates. Chloe, tired of seeing him upset, confirms it, and that she only didn’t say anything is because she promised him he wouldn’t at first. Once the word is out, the first classmate to offer friendship is Nino.
With Mari’s help and support, Adrien learns to accept his disorder, and makes many new friends, like Alya, Nino, Luka, Max, Kim, Alix, Nathaniel, Marc, etc, but he is closest to Marinette, and the two slowly start to fall in love.
Because of his insecurities, and sensitivity, Adrien gets upset rather easily. He often seeks comfort, and a shoulder to cry on when the days are just too much. His friends, his caretakers, and especially his mother, are all too happy to give it to him.
Everyone finds their own way of helping Adrien overcome his anxieties and insecurities.
His mother encourages him to play piano.
His father encouraged learning Chinese before he passed away
Alix and Kim play sports with Adrien.
Marc and Nathaniel encourage Adrien to express himself by drawing and writing.
Nino and Alya watch movies with Adrien.
Mylene and Ivan encourage Adrien to act and roleplay.
Max plays videogames with Adrien.
Chloe and Sabrina take Adrien shopping.
Rose and Juleka encourage Adrien to try different outfits and looks, other than what he usually models.
Luka encourages Adrien to sing, where it is discovered that when Adrien sings, he doesn’t stammer, and he actually has a lovely singing voice.
Marinette shows Adrien how to bake with her parents.
Everybody does a little bit of everything with Adrien, slowly building his confidence, reducing his stress, increasing his creativity, helping him socialize, and just make him feel loved from the outside world, rather than just from home.
Master Fu still gives Marinette and Adrien the Ladybug and Chat Noir Miraculous.
Adrien is hesitant, because he thinks superheroes shouldn’t stutter. But Master Fu’s response is “Rubbish. A hero speaks, not with his mouth, but with his heart, and you, Adrien Agreste, have a very loud heart.”
Ladybug thinks of Adrien when she’s with Chat, and always does random nice things for him, and is always super sweet about everything, like smiling at his puns no matter how long it takes him to get them out, or handling the press when they do interviews so Chat doesn’t have to.
A kid comes up to Chat after a battle and tells him they think it’s super cool he stutters because the kid does too and if CHAT NOIR does it and is still this suave hero, the kid feels a lot better about it now.
This causes Chat/Adrien to become very emotional. He hugs the kid while crying happy tears, and gives them an autograph.
Marinette and Tikki are super close, as always.
Tikki often hears Marinette talking about Adrien, and is touched by just how much Marinette cares about the poor boy.
Plagg tries to help Adrien have more of a sense of humor about his situation, telling him jokes and poking fun, but always being weary of Adrien’s feelings.
Emilie thinks back to the days when she was the only one Adrien wanted to talk to, and it broke her heart to see her son not have any friends, which is why she is relieved that Adrien has finally found so many now.
Adrien has nightmares from time to time, some so bad, they cause him to cry. He also has dreams about his father. Good or bad, they always make him cry, because he misses him so much. Emilie, Nathalie, Gorilla, and Plagg usually comfort him.
Sabine and Ms. Bustier have volunteered to act as speech therapists for Adrien, having learned a thing or two about speech therapy in the past. As always, They are kind and patient with the boy.
Emilie’s nickname for Adrien is “My Sunshine”.
All of Adrien’s lesson, including fencing and basketball, were private. His parents feared he would be bullied if they were public.
Adrien is a skilled fencer and ball player, but his instructors have noted that he lacks self-confidence. They think he could do great in their public classes if he would only acknowledge his own talent, and take pride in it.
Eventually, thanks to his new friends and superhero status, Adrien finally has enough courage to join the public classes, much to the joy of his mother, and his proud instructors.
Once his new fencing classes begin, he is inserted into a class reflecting his level of skill. In this class, he meets Kagami, who he quickly becomes close with, despite there being a small rivalry between them.
While not as common as they used to be, there are still days where Adrien becomes sad and depressed. On those days, he tends to lie in bed.
On days like this, someone in his group of friends does something to try and cheer him up. Adrien appreciates them for this.
Alix, Kim, and Ivan offer to beat the tar out of anyone who made Adrien upset, especially if they made him cry. He normally talks them out of it.
Chloe lends Adrien Mr. Cuddly.
Marc and Nathaniel bring Adrien ice cream and an upbeat animated movie to watch with him.
Alya shows him funny videos and memes online.
Juleka and Rose offer Adrien listening ears and comforting words.
Luka brings his guitar, and sings Adrien their favorite songs.
Nino goes all out. Junk food, anime, hugs, the works, all for his best friend.
Plagg usually tells jokes or makes witty comments to help Adrien laugh at the situation.
Marinette cuddles with Adrien. He loves this in particular.
Adrien’s mother watches all of this, and loves every minute of it.
There is a villain named Hawkmoth in this world, but his identity is different. His real name is Emil Dupre, a wealthy arms dealer. He was the one who orchestrated Gabriel’s demise, and stole his Miraculous. He has big plans for the Ladybug and Chat Noir Miraculouses, plans similar to Gabriel’s, if not a bit more sinister and selfish. He is also obsessed with Adrien and Emilie.
Sabine Cheng and Caline Bustier are close friends. They used to volunteer to help children with disorders. This is how their friendship began.
Sabine and Caline’s arrangement with Adrien was Caline’s idea. Sabine was more than delighted to agree.
Because of Caline and Sabine’s friendship, there was a short time where Marinette was accused of being the teacher’s pet. Ms. Bustier was quick to debunk this, scolding the children for such behavior.
Marinette is still pretty clumsy and awkward at times, but is usually able to control herself around Adrien, despite their mutual crush, though she still gets flustered by him from time to time.
After nearly dying at the hands of Stoneheart, Chloe is traumatized, and realizes just how terrible she’s been to everybody. After a tearful conversation with Sabrina, Chloe makes the decision to turn over a new leaf, and apologize to everyone she’s ever wronged.
Kagami knows very well that Adrien is crushing on Marinette hard. She warns him that the quickest way to lose is to hesitate, and that he should make a move.
Tom is absolutely crazy about Adrien, and is always offering to spend time with the boy. Adrien is always willing.
While he’s getting better at it, meeting new people is still pretty scary for Adrien, but he usually tries to overcome it.
Gina, being the protective grandmother that she is, will be skeptical about Adrien at first, but the minute she finds out about his stammering, she immediately becomes supportive as she has had friends and family with similar problems.
Gina insists that all of Marinette’s friends call her “Granny Gina”, especially Adrien.
While he has his preferences, Luka respects and appreciates all genres of music, and will never be heard saying “I can’t stand *insert genre here*”.
Emilie, in an attempt to bond a little more with her son and his friends, makes regular efforts to get together with the other parents. This comes as a surprise, but the other parents are usually willing.
Emilie has also made attempts to use “hip modern lingo” with her son and his friends, trying to come off as “cool” and “down with it”, but it comes off as awkward, much to Nathalie’s embarrassment, as well as Adrien’s.
Emilie has never cursed a day in her life, and never will.
Emilie, still being a very successful actress, often invites her son and his friends to her movie premieres.
One day, Adrien finally feels bold enough to take Marinette, confess his love, and kiss her. Marinette admits to feeling same way, and kisses him back.
