Since the Avatar existed for exactly 10,000 years when LOK book 2 takes place and according to Roku in ATLA book 1 he lived a thousand lifetimes, the average Avatar died at 10 years old.

Even if we assume Roku was being hyperbolic, the average Avatar still would have to die very young since we know there were hundreds of them.
