I decided a while ago I wanted to make myself a fox themed hexagon cardigan as a sort of exercise in whether or not I could/ how would it be like to have a cute piece of clothing that is kind of like a fursuit (but made in a way that I would make it).
I started out by polling people on which yarn should I use (because I'm indecisive). Here were the options:
Option 1 is Orange (original, I know), while option 2 is called Goldfish. I went ahead and ordered both (which turned out to be a good thing, because option 2 was far more neon/bright than I wanted).
I decided to go ahead a swatch my colors out
Option 1 looked more cozy to me. Option two was giving me Tails from Sonic (which is fine, but not what I wanted). I proceeded to make the cardigan with Option 1, and in a few days, I had the first side of the body done.
I started working on side two, and then I ran out of yarn. Cue me waiting 8 days on more yarn. The yarn arrived, and I did another day's work on side two. Then... I went to check the size and folded the side over only to have it not fold correctly. I'd been making a pentagon rather than a hexagon.
This meant I had to frog the side. A day's work wasted.
I finally got the second side done and started seaming the sides together (one of my favourite processes), and started on the black accents. My thought process was to make the arms like a fox's legs. I fiddled around with how many rounds of black I wanted and decided I wanted enough to have it hit mid hand. I find that has a good balance between "cozy" and "practical."
Next, I decided I wanted a couple of rows around the neck and front in white (I'd just opt to have the white go all the way around next time, honestly).
Finally, I started fiddling with the tail. This was actually harder than I'd thought because I wanted to keep it in the "granny square" theme with the clusters of 3 double crochet. After a while I figured out what I wanted to do and made it.
The final step was me making my partner wear it so I could figure out where to place the tail so it looked right.
Then I made a couple videos for tiktok/ Instagram because that seems to be the only way people notice these sorts of things these days and I was really proud of it.
I think this turned out great! Im already planning on making one that looks like my cat Bliss.
I'd love to try making another based off someone's fursona, or another canid/felid.
