this post has been a wild ride for me
N3-RV's first time on a new ship and immediately causing issues with the established crew.
I'm done saving you.
Teridax's fatal flaw is that he's too evil.
Literally.
He doesn't take the most direct route to his goals and kill any enemy that could threaten him, simply because he enjoys watching them suffer too much.
Contrast this with Melding Teridax, who does not hesitate at all to smash a bunch of alternate Takanuvas to pieces. There's no satisfaction in it, it's just removing a threat, a means to an end.
This makes me think that Teridax might have taken over the universe more efficiently, and perhaps without even being detected by the Toa, had he focused on his main goal and not being obsessed with making all "lesser beings" miserable. So, the most threatening hypothetical version of Teridax might be one that hadn't leeched out his light to become a shadow being, didn't get his kicks out of being evil, and instead pursued his plan with a ruthless efficiency that the canon Teridax could only dream of.
Or, at least a version that found a way to kick that unfortunate monologuing habit...
Yeah, that's pretty much it. That and his massive ego.
He could have taken over the GSR stealthily. Orchestrated Mata Nui's death much like he did, supplanted him, and then just carried on as the new Great Spirit, but he would never be satisfied unless everyone knew what he'd done. He believed himself so superior to everyone, but he was not secure in that knowledge. He needed everyone to know he was cleverer than them, needed it constantly acknowledged and validated and praised. That was the root of it all of course, he was jealous of Mata Nui, wanted adulation for himself. But he had no idea how to get it except by pulling the wool over people's eyes or getting one over on them.
You could sort of view it as a twist on the original portrayal of Makuta as a spirit of destruction. That's what Teridax does, he destroys. It's the only thing he knows how to do. He resolves conflicts by decimating both sides until they can no longer fight. He explains his thoughts through insults and challenges. He seeks attention by menacing and attacking the people he wants it from, sates his need to feel intelligent and superior with trickery. The only things he creates are the only creatures in the MU with limited lifespans, many of which aren't viable life-forms in the first place, and those that are still revolve around deception and destruction. He finally achieves his ultimate goal, becomes a living god, and can think of nothing to do with that power but keep conquering and torturing. He literally cannot help himself.
He thinks he's so brilliant, and he is, but he's bought into his own propaganda as the mastermind. He has plans upon plans, backups for his backups, and he thinks that makes him so ordered, so much more on top of things than everyone else, but he's completely chaotic. He erects obstacles for himself, risks ruining his own schemes, just for the chance to cause a little more suffering, and to show off. He wants to show off so badly, wants everyone to see him the way he wants to be seen, but has no idea how to do it except through inflicting fear and pain. Benevolence doesn't even occur to him.
He could be within inches of his dreams, but there’s a puppy two miles away, so he’s gotta take a lil detour to go kick it first.
A pretty clear example of that was in the Metru Arc. The Toa Metru completely trusted him, and handed themselves to him. He showed his hand by attacking them, where all he had to do was 1. Not have his Dark Hunters out in clear view standing right next to him, and 2. Just continue to play along and let the Toa Metru think he trusted them. He could have had them rounded up into spheres or worse as well, and convinced them to just walk into their own demise.
But he couldn't do that. He was given a chance to directly psychologically torture a bunch of baby Toa by publicly humiliating them (empowering and turning them into his enemies), rather than keep his mouth shut and use their trust and inexperience against them. And he just could not resist kicking the dang puppy.
I know many of you out there are feeling a bit down. Have a crow to Wouldn’t it be Nice by the Beach Boys to lift your mood.
He stops and looks both ways?!?
You wanna know what makes this better?
Crows normally walk. This one seems to have both legs working, so he’s not hopping out of necessity, he’s doing it for fun. Corvids can sometimes be seen doing things like this for no evident reason other than enjoyment.
This is my new favorite post
I can’t ever not reblog.
Have some happy crow vibes

Im sorry im actually devastated but this might actually be one of the cruelest things in these books i've read so far 😭
like holy shit the entire vezok situation is so upsetting to me bc like yea he's horrible they're all horrible but just. the absolute state of this guy is tearing me apart lisa
"Vezok's eyes flared to life. Thok met them and saw immediately that his fellow Piraka had changed. Gone was the cold intelligence that had kept Vezok alive all these years, replaced by white-hot anger."
LIKE.. this was a character who was intelligent & sharp, a calculative monster who was able to outsmart his enemies. and that was ripped away from him, taking a form of its own and walking away. just like that, his ability to think clearly, quickly, and precisely, was gone.
vezok comes across like he suffered brain damage that caused a change in his core personality, and how he thinks and functions
i literally can't help but pity this wet beast who has done nothing but harm to everyone around him across many millennia, because oh my god, not just having a core part of yourself be taken away from you, but also knowing that you're not yourself, knowing you're missing something, seems like such a terrible and disorienting state of being
vezok finally getting a chance to be full again & furiously asking to be put back together, only for his teammates to say it's a waste of time and destroying his chance for it to ever happen, is unbelievably cruel.
i feel like there's a case to be made about zaktan refusing to help him out of spite and jealousy, as he himself also hasn't been a whole being for a very, very long time.

thinking about camazotz is a direct parallel to ritsuka in how they lived and their journey
the king of braves for whom all of humanity sacrificed themselves for. the last master of humanity who's the only hope of getting any of it back. ritsuka surrounded by friends and allies and notably speeding his ass through everything (lb1 in 2 weeks, lb3 in ONE), camazotz who spent millions of miserable torturous lonely years throwing himself at the spider again and again
ritsuka who refuses to let go of his memories and the people precious to him. camazotz who forgot every single one while desperately grabbing at them like sand that slips through his fingers
Toa Metru being influenced by their metru's Toa Mangai not just Lhikan, anyone?
Nokama lived through Naho's death and the grief that followed as well as Tuyet's killings and betrayal. It's obvious which one of those Toa she would emulate, but Tuyet served as a reminder that Toa of Water carry power and the capacity for hatred and violence. when she becomes a Hordika, she remembers Tuyet's rage, and it makes her afraid. she always wants her brothers to see her the way she feels Lhikan saw Naho: patient, warm, and endlessly reliable.
I've written about Onewa feeling fealty to Lhikan's stone brother, whom he had seen in battle and trusted whole-heartedly. when the Stone Toa died, Onewa's loyalty transferred to Lhikan instead. truthfully, as they started losing the Mangai, Onewa lost a sense of security in Po-Metru and missed the feeling that the Toa was nearby to watch over them. he never had a lot of friends but had always felt that the Toa accepted him and liked him as he was. the Toa wasn't some distant hero to Onewa, he was a companion and a feeling of safety
less tragically, Matau is one of the Matoran who burns effigies of Nidhiki and helps graffiti the place where he used to live, celebrating his downfall. a lot of Le-Matoran laugh about his defeat and how solidly Lhikan paid back his betrayal, but really, it smarts to know their city's Air Toa did that. not that Nidhiki had had much of an interest in Le-Metru for years. the Mangai weren't from Metru Nui and some of them took more interest in the metrus than others. that being said, Matau thinks a lot about Nidhiki when Vakama is with Roodaka. even though Vakama is the one who turned on them, Matau still can't but think it would be a betrayal not to try and save him. he doesn't want to be like Nidhiki, who put himself first and turned on his Fire Toa. Matau decides to put Vakama first no matter if it costs him his life. he redeems Nidhiki's betrayal
I just see the Toa Mangai of Earth as the first person to get that idea of "we preserve the past to learn from it" into the collective conscious of the Onu-Matoran in Metru Nui and Whenua just took that and ran with it. that Toa was very very old and respected, although Whenua did not know him well. Whenua also once heard the Earth Toa and the Plant Life Toa arguing like they hated each other and then laughing together five minutes later. so he thought, oh, it's okay to disagree with each other sometimes when you're Toa. and it made him realize that Toa are just people too and not always perfectly measured and mature or magically heroic. some of his siblings didn't learn that lesson til they were already Toa, so he's grateful for it.
Nuju has a lot of possible heroes to learn from as a Ko-Matoran, and for all that he's an academia-focused nerd who enjoyed the isolation of his study, he loved the Four Brothers Frost. all of Ko-Metru did. four Ice Toa who fought Kanohi Dragons together?? they were so cool. but Nuju never ever imagined himself as a Toa, so to him, it was more like these were professionals in another field, or even storybook characters. it wasn't until he was a Toa that he started wondering if he was like them at all or asked himself what they would do in his place. the Brothers Frost were very independent, so it could have taught Nuju that he didn't need a team, but actually what he saw was that no matter how much they preferred working alone, they always came when Lhikan called and recognized a need for a united team. Nuju reflects on that a lot - it just takes him a long time to decide Vakama is the one who should be the head of that unity. sometimes, now that Matoro has also passed, Nuju fears that Ice Toa will die out in the world. you could call it an irrational fear, although it's true there are few Ice Toa left, but it comes from the memory of watching all four of them die one after the another. still, he tries to be like them: taking absolutely no shit from anyone, ever, but loyal to his siblings and his Matoran
