The Dying Gasp
“In another life, I would've really liked just doing laundry and taxes with you.”
Shadowbringers is about two old men trying to out dramatic each other and failing while wearing the most frilly of robes. Grandstanding, trying to win over the heroes' heart and trying to out old man each other while everyone else is trying to fix the Post Apocalyptic Hellscape.
my favorite part about the design is that they are functionally wearing the same outfit. g'raha's robe is probably one emet-selch would have worn during the golden age of the allagan empire, assuming he wasn't too busy napping to show up at court. the visual parallel is so fun & i love the idea that g'raha has spent the last century playing dress-up as the villain, but it is a costume that he can (and eventually does) shed, unlike emet-selch who can churn through as many bodies and robes as he wants but he cannot ever, ever stop
they are practically identical in other ways too
both trying to cancel a timeline to bring back the world they loved both architect a kingdom for their goals both love theatrics both are very good at telling half-truths. both are keepers of their dead friends' last wish both leave you a city as a gift
a lot of small episodes match too. we reprimand emet that he sends an illusion instead of showing up himself, but so does g'raha with vauthry
they have the same music theme even
the only difference is that one loves everything he touches and the other has long since found it lacking
"the only difference is that one loves everything he touches and the other has long since found it lacking"
🥹 I'm fine.
One can mold his vessel into whatever shape he desires, after dragging himself inch by agonizing inch through life times uncountable.
The other is sacrificing his flesh, inch by agonizing inch, to ensure he achieves what he desires after the deaths of life times uncountable.
