Freedom Awaits 🪶 pt 2
pt 1
The next two weeks were hectic. Keigo was moving up in ranks almost immediately after bringing you home. The News story of him adopting his younger sibling giving him a new wave of fans and a boost in the ratings.
You were sitting on the couch, having already put up your pullout bed, and watching TV. The news channel. It wasn't all that interesting but it was something since you weren't allowed to go outside without Keigo, after giving him a heart attack when you went to a nearby gas station for food.
Speak of the devil, the man stumbled out of his bedroom to the living room area. His feathers were neat but messy, as if he only put half the mental energy it took into preening them.He rubs his eyes and yawns before he sees you. He notices the TV next and a kind, sleepy smile crosses his face as he wakes up fully. He walks over and leans against the back of the couch.
"Finally deciding to watch TV?" He asks, tilting his head as he looks down at you, who was sat back straight on the couch. You tilt your head back to see him. You nod. He ruffles your hair gently before glancing at the TV.
"Why the News, kid?"
You wait a moment, glancing at the TV then back at him. You shrug as he takes the remote and switches the channel to something more colorful. In sheer shock and fear, you jumped over the couch and hid behind Keigo at the sudden sight of a moving drawing of a yellow square with a obnoxious laughs comes on.
"What the hell is that?-"
You ask hurriedly as you grab the back of his shirt, peaking out to look at it as the yellow square starts dancing. You sounded so genuine Keigo didn't know what to feel, whether he should laugh or be concerned that you don't know what cartoons are.
Then again, you were raised in a facility since almost literal birth. You didn't know about a lot of things kids your age did. Cartoons, coloring books, or games in general. Keigo puts a hand behind your head and kneels down to your level.
"Hey, it's alright. It's just a TV show called a cartoon. It's something kids your age would typically enjoy, I think." He chuckles lightly, having been six when he himself was recruited by the HPSC.
You look at him with the trust only a child can give. A trust a child should be able to give, but you don't have that ability. You have deception and perception, but you still trust him.
You nod and look at the TV again, still uneasy, "So.. it's just a television program?"
You ask, looking from the walking yellow sponge and pink star fish to your brother. He nods and makes a 'mhm' sound.
"Well if you want to sound old about it, sure, c'mon. I think you'll like it."
He stands and uses his hand on your head to bring you back to the couch.
"Here, sit. I'm going to go make breakfast then after we eat we can head to my agency."
He explains and you nod before turning your attention back to the television. Keigo smiles and walks to the kitchen to make some breakfast. True to his word, after you both have eaten, Keigo makes sure you're dressed nice as he gets in his hero costume.
You are sat on the edge of his bed, already dressed in a hoodie that you both bought at a thrift store, Keigo ordered you custom clothes for your wings but they wouldn't be in for another week. So for now there were two holes cut in the back of the hoodie. You finish tying your shoes as Keigo dramatically turns around, pushing his glasses up.
"Well, how do I look?"
He asks, sardonic as ever.
"Like stained glass."
You reply with the straightest face ever, hearing the sarcasm in your own voice. Keigo looked escounced before chuckling and patting your head again.
"Brat."
You get up off the bed and follow him to the door. He offers his hand which you take.
"Do you want to fly or walk today?"
He asks. You think for a second before glancing at the clock. You look back at him.
"Fly."
Keigo nods and you both walk out of the apartment and leave the building.
You land on what was supposed to be a helicopter pad that Keigo had made turned into a landing pad for himself, and now you.
You could see his secretary inside, tapping her foot impatiently. She heard you both land and turned to face you.
She was a stern young woman who was always dressed nicely with slick back dark blue hair and brown eyes that glowed yellow when she used her quirk of night vision. She had made a deal with you when you first arrived with Keigo at the agency, you don't bother her and behave, she gives you five dollars at the end of the day.
Money is money, who are you to argue with unhealthy parenting?
Keigo just smiled at her, seeming relaxed as ever. You say nothing. No smile, just your eyes finding hers.
"Do you have any idea how many times I've called you, Hawks?" The secretary asks the moment you two step inside.
"Ah, c'mon, Pigeon, how serious could it be for seven in the morning?" Keigo asks, sitting in his office chair, wings spread behind his back.
You give the man a unimpressed look at the nickname that you knew was supposed to be provocative. It was also disrespectful to her as she was just trying to do her job. And yet you say nothing.
Maybe that makes you a coward. Maybe it makes the situation better for not adding fuel to the embers.
"Would the number two hero Endeavor and his youngest son be considered important to you, sir?" The secretary asks cooly, not allowing Hawks' lax behavior affect her. "Because they are wanting to speak with you and [Name]."
You had to stop yourself from rolling your eyes at the way Keigo sat up. It wasn't a hidden fact to you that the top hero was basically a idol to your brother.
This is going to be a long day.
You think to yourself as you sit on the couch and wait for the inevitable of Endeavor barging in with his son.
You knew Endeavor had children, but you never heard anything about them. As if he's ashamed. You didn't like the thought of that. It reminded you too much of your old mentor from the facility.
White walls, black marble floors, a torn up training dummy. Red feathers sticking out from where's its head used to be. A disappointed palm striking your face for being to slow and unprescise.
Your eyes look up from the ground to the door to see Keigo standing there, opening the door for a very large man to enter and then a boy around your age. Bicolored hair. A huge scar on his left eye.You study him for a moment before he looks at you and at your wings.
It's not unusual for people to stare at them, you've learned. You study each other before you look at Endeavor again. He's in his hero costume.
"Hawks, about time you let us in." Your eyes narrow at Endeavor's tone as you get up from the couch to go stand beside your brother as he greets his college. He introduced you then squats down to wave to young boy.
"Hey kid, I'm Hawks. what's your name?" Keigo asks.
The boy looks at his father. Endeavor nods and the boy looks back at Keigo.
"My name is Shoto Todoroki, I am Endeavor's son. My quirk is Half hot-half cold."
His voice his flat, divoid of child like joy. Like yours. Keigo clears his throat at the surprising straight forwardness of the boy.
"Got 'im well trained, don't you, Endeavor?" He asks the tall man, standing up straight once more.
"Yes. I see yours could use more critique." The number two pro hero states, looking at your attire with critical eyes. You couldn't fully blame him, you did look a bit scruffy with your hole cut hoodie and shorts.
You feel Keigo's hand come to rest on your shoulder opposite of him.
"Hey now, leave the kid alone. If you're going to criticize anyone, criticize me. But, rudeness aside, I've gotta ask. Why are you here? Shouldn't you be at your own agency?
Keigo asks as his secretary leaves, rolling her eyes as she goes. You know exactly why and can't blame her. Endeavor speaks.
"Well, it's simple you see. I wanted to see who's successor will win in a head to head fight."
