I animated FLAVOR FOLEY’s music video Human ft. SF-A2 Miki!!!
Here’s a post of my process work as the artist/animator 🤖✨🤝
Jamie P. of FLAVOR FOLEY dm’d me in Nov to ask if I had any availability to animate a music video! I, of course, answered affirmatively in a composed and calm way
The video had a tight turnaround, so their concept was to have some simple B&W sketchy pieces, and a simple looping hair blowing animation for the refrain, which would go from sketchy -> lineart -> colored. I imagine they meant for maybe a couple sketchy pieces but I’m insane, you see
The singer for this song is the Vocaloid MIKI!!!!! I remembered her 2009 design (with the blue!!! The fluff!!!) but didn’t know about her newer, pink designs! (WHERES THE BLUE THO)

FLAVOR FOLEY wanted Miki to look robot-y, and wanted something visually different from her official designs.
I immediately got to sketching some, but you can already tell what the problem is. ITS JUST A VARIATION OF HER 2009 DESIGN (BECAUSE ITS GOOD AS HELL AND IM BIASED)
I did also sketch what the refrain would look like– I immediately knew she needed different expressions for each version, with a big cute smile at the end!!! SHE'S HUMAN SHE'S REAL SHE'S HAPPY
Thankfully FLAVOR FOLEY gave me some more constraint ideas for Miki's design (i thrive on contraints): fluffy hair like her 2025 design, “weird eyelashes”, stars, “if we can have navy that’d be cool”, “ROBOT LINES!!! ROBOT JOINTS!!! THIS IS NON NEGOTIABLE!!!!!!”
And finally rice (member of FLAVOR FOLEY) sent me a “vibe sketch” they made forever ago. And it clicked
This is it. The evangelion plugsuit. A body that’s breaking down, cables visible through the wear and tear. And a cool, pristine jacket, lovingly taken care of, perhaps belonging to someone dear to her
We all worked together to make the colors fit, but here are some variations for your viewing pleasure

With the character design done, I got to making a simple storyboard, which didn't end up requiring many changes. Thank you FLAVOR FOLEY for letting me Do My Thing!!!
I worked as an animator for many years, and this was pretty simple animation… I had a lot of fun. I hadn’t animated hair in a while though, so this video saved my bacon

And after that, I just animated the whole video!!! From the concept art to finishing the animation, this took me like a week. Which is great because i had one week of break to rest from making my visual novel lol

I remember when I was younger, anytime I watched a movie where the characters have to kill a scary monster/alien, I always thought the act of killing it was intended to be part of the horror. Like there’s this amazing creature that we’ve never seen before, and maybe under different circumstances we could’ve coexisted with it, but it’s trying to attack you and you have to defend yourself, but by destroying it you also destroy the ability to ever understand it and that’s sad and is supposed to make you feel conflicted.
It was not until well into my adulthood that I realized most people do not have complicated feelings about movies where people have to kill a scary alien monster, nor is that necessarily meant to be part of the narrative (unless it very obviously is). They just want the scary thing to die because it’s scary. I don’t have a real conclusion to this I just started thinking about it for some reason.
